That's the problem when you look at only part of the package. You end up bringing Hi-rez as a better example of monetization vs a game where you can fully compete without spending a dime or grinding your mind out.

This whole Apex dumpster fire was irrelevant. They had shitty prices, people complained, either they adjust prices or don't sell shit and game dies. It all went retardo when those devs/pr attacked the user base, which imo should result in instant job loss but apparently the clown is strong. Also, they try to compete in the f2p business and don't seem to have any grasp of the value of those "freeloaders". Which says a lot about how qualified they are...

Back when I still played Smite (Hi-rez's 3rd person MOBA), 1500 gems (20 bucks) can easily get you at least 2 tier 4 skins, more if you buy event bundles. These skins change god's model/theme, give completely new animations, new FX and new voice lines (Smite gods have shit tons of voice lines due to the VGS system). For example the Mayan bee god Ah Muzen Cab has a tier 4 skin called Dark Whisperer that turns him into a Cthulhu monstrosity with terrifying voice.

That shit easily spit on Apex Legends' 18 bucks recolored camo. These modern games as a service are trying to monetize like MMORPG and can't deliver the same amount and quality of content, what a joke.

Still asking? Not quite. Season 2 is practically over, so it's not as bumping but season 3 will likely cause player count rise again.

EDIT: It's not fabulously optimistic. The first season went horribly, the second one had an event people disliked. Otherwise, they've been doing very well for themselves. It's not a matter of liking the game or style of games. It has enough Twitch viewers to usually stay in the top 20. It's not a Fork Knife killer but it's making EA money for sure.

This game is very disappointing to play after the glorious incline of tf2, but I saw some cool vides of people pulling off cool speed tricks with grapple and walljumps, maybe I'll try it another time when its on steam

On a serious note you can clearly see the difference in characters compared to say Overwatch. Overwatch characters are likable, every single one of them because Blizzard knows how and wants to create lokable characters. Apex Legends though has some characters that are simply insufferable. Wraith, the games token character, is a prime example of an edginess in its pure form. Find me more edgy character in video games and ill give u a medal.
