I would help the guy out and make some for him, but besides Titan Quest I can't think of any RPG that uses those settings, and Titan Quest doesn't have painted portraits. We had a thread about games set in Egypt and that featured no RPGs either, except the Ravenloft one. So if he wants to larp thot online he's shit out of luck. It's weird when you think about it, how much RPGs owe to Greece with the hero's journey and all, but most RPGs are just heavily watered down Tolkien.
It doesn't have to be an RPG. For example, Invictus had hero art by Vance Kovacs and Justin Sweet (BTW provide uncropped rips if you get around to it, not seeing any online). Or you could go the lazy way of editing these AoM portraits.

There are more Greek- and Egyptian-themed sprites in Dominions than what's currently available, too.

I will try to get Invictus and Dominions rips, but in the meantime I cropped the AoM portraits.

I wonder what would happen if you were to switch the filenames for Arachne and Arachne_Spiderform around (hopefully it'd show the other one during hero selection?).
Nothing much, those html files only contain the text that goes along with the portrait. I may not be able to rip the images from whatever arcane format they used to store the images in, but I can read html.
For Dominions the easiest way would be to download the data inspector standalone from here
Done, I had no idea that the game was made by such turbo-autists, 3431 units? I've gone through the factions mentioned in your post and stripped the big sprites from them. The only question now becomes which ones are in the gallery already. Don't want to waste time redoing what is already in there. Joined on the 4th of July uploaded 211 and I have 334 in my folder, so there will be a couple of new ones after the dupes are sorted away. Actually my number includes variations, it's very possible that all the good ones are already in there and that I have wasted my time.
How nice. Thank you.
It was nothing.

The link Joined on the 4th of July provided doesn't work anymore, could you upload the current gallery as a zip archive, Infinitron, or list all the files in the directory by filename, as they seem to be still named in the same convention as what I'm working with. There might literally just be a couple of big sprites missing from Dominions 5 that I could then work into proper avatar dimensions and upload them.

Uh, are you referring to this?
Precisely, just what I wanted, the filenames are based on the unit IDs so now I will know which ones are already in the gallery in the Dominions 4 folder and I won't make any duplicates. Assuming that the IDs carry across over games that is, but seeing how much is in this game that's a safe assumption to make, if there were any changes they must have been additive or of existing sprites. What I have come up with is a supplementary addition to the existing gallery, filling it out with sprites either not used or that were added in the fifth game.

I am however having a hard time matching whatever resampling method Joined used, nearest neighbor produces a too harsh results, while other methods such as bicubic and bilinear produces too soft results. So the choice is between blurry and crunched.

Regardless I will go with NN since it most matches the avatars already present in the gallery, it will look like shit no matter what I do because I only scale them down a couple of pixels to meet the 96 by 96 target and they're like a hundred pixels tall, it's not much of an issue with that head, but in some other cases. Don't care at this point though, but scaling pixel art down by a single pixel is absolutely retarded, cropping them would look just as bad though.

Final payload delivery, iah iah Abraxas, this game was surely made by the demiurge to fuck with me.

ZIP DL of 184 spanking brand new Dominions avatars, many variants where applicable: http://www.filedropper.com/moredominionsavatars (Add them to the current Dominions gallery, maybe remove the 4 since these are from game number 5)

Dominions is a bullshit game and I will not explain that statement, but it truly is a clusterfuck and whoever is responsible for it had no fucking clue what he was doing.

I'd rather have separate folders for each game in the series if possible. I take it these games reuse the same portraits for each installment?

BTW I just use Lanczos for everything personally.

It's pretty much the same game that gets regularly patched with free new content and after some years it gets a +1 number with some bigger mechanics addition and to give the devs more money (you can even grab map files from the first or second game and open them in the newer ones). The only relevant-here graphical change was from Dom3 to Dom4 when they replaced majority of blurry, low-res old sprites with crispier new ones (and at a glance I'm not seeing any leftover Dom3 sprites in the gallery). You could rename it to "Dominions series" if you're still not convinced, as there's no reason to separate them.

Do as you please, my man, but I couldn't tell you which ones are unique to the fifth game and which ones were already in the fourth. Many of those I just made could belong to either folder, just as the ones you already find in the gallery also belong to the fifth game by virtue of being identical. Hard to separate the two. If you only want one folder per game you could just rename it Dominions 5 since that is what it would be with the addition.

I will give it a go, but for now I'm not making any more avatars for a long good while. There was no way of really automating this process in this case, since different things needed to be done for each image. A lot of work for not that great results.

I'm much happier with the Tarot based ones. Here are the full scans of the cards if anyone is interested: http://www.filedropper.com/1910tarotpamela-a

Regarding the pixel crunch, it doesn't matter what algorithm you use when details are one pixel thick and you change picture dimensions, there is no possibility of things staying the same. Usually that's when you start cropping, but with these sprites it would get terribly awkward, since you'd either cut off their already pixel sparse feet or the top of their heads or weapons.

Hey, would any of you kind lads who are far more talented than myself be willing to make up some Silent Hill and Resident Evil avatars? Just a few suggestions: my waifu Jill Valentine, Wesker, Barry, Claire Redfield, Heather Mason, James Sunderland, and Maria. Pyramid Head, Nurses, and Nemesis would also make for some good ones.

I'd appreciate it big time bros.

You are incapable of making 96x96 png files? If you're blind, retarded and have no hands, then I'll be happy to resize some images for you. Otherwise it's a very simple procedure.

I posted an example of my skills in a different thread and it looked like dog vomit. I'm not super savvy at this stuff. Combine that with the fact I'm on medication to control my alcohol withdrawals and I just suck at everything right now

Fair enough, I'd use that Jill avatar. She ain't no Julia Voth but I'll take what I can get!
