How many more games will it take to undersell before Obsidian is shut down for good?

Yeah, ok. Cool I guess.

strictly optional companions
You mean I'm forced to go on an adventure with the bitchy reddit-tier companions FORCED upon me? Why would they do that? For what purpose?

Same reason why there are only 4 companions. It's (a) easier for them to make and (b) makes it easy for the narrative to expand if they make sequels and/or DLC because they don't have to account for world states where you didn't have the supporting cast. Also probably because they want to force you to play with their Reddit-tier companions.

Mostly it's about what makes their job easier, although I would have thought after NWN2 OC and Pillars of Eternity they would have learned that the slow burn approach isn't feasible at the AA/AAA level. All it does is put you in 'maybe DLC will fix it' territory.

Hi.

gosh
Gosh
GOSH!

omg it was sitting around 183 a few days back and to see it at 31 today just shows the determination and support the codex has continued to give the Pillars of Eternity games over the last two releases :salute: not to mention all the marketing we have seen in the interviews, the billboards, the music tease, all the new images of the game especially when xbox gamepass is said to be the butter for the bread in sale numbers to have Avowed in the top selling steam games at the cost they are pushing it for is great news so tu to everyone who is pulling for this and see you in Eora soon!

Thanks,
Sherry

It's on Gamepass Day 1 so most people will be playing there rather than forking out full RRP. Will be funny if it sells better than Veilguard on Steam though.

Did they undersell any games before? Other than Deadfire (although Sawyer says it’s eventually broken even) and Tyranny(a C project)?
Obsidian's next five games after Pillars of Eternity (2015) were all commercial failures, to varying extents, hence the desperation of being acquired by Microsoft in 2018. Ironically, Obsidian then had success with two games already in development, The Outer Worlds (2019) and Grounded (2020), though Avowed is shaping up to be its most expensive flop yet.

There were 5 Obsidian games between POE and Outer Worlds?

A studio should be more than their last game. Especially given the context. Outer Worlds was a budget title under Private Division. Hardly fair to declare them dead because of that alone. Pentiment and Grounded were great games.

I'm gonna give them 2-3 projects that began production under Microsoft before I have any opinion. Obsidian's biggest problem was always a lack of stability as a independent work for hire studio.
Avowed = :d1p: for me

I didn't like Grounded, but Pentiment was one of the best games of the last 10 years. I'm at the very least interested in seeing what Sawyer can keep doing with a small little team like that.
As someone who thought that The Outer Worlds was simply fine, my opinions on Avowed are reserved. But I'm going to check it out with an open mind.

Obsidian's best games were made when they were independent, struggling, and/or under immense time pressure (Kotor 2, F:NV).

"Stability" only brought us slop.

Hi.

Gosh some great discussion going on in the last few pages, so take a break and enjoy TEN beautiful images of The Living Lands.

Thanks,
Sherry
Wow, didn't expect you to write an actually good summary of the expectations

"don't discuss the game, I know gameplay and writing will be shit, but hey, look at pretty graphics!"

Thanks,
Sherry
