My prediction is that Avowed will likely going to be a better game and even better RPG than The Outer Worlds.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Divinity: Original Sin Project: Eternity Torment: Tides of Numenera Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
We already know that Avowed is going to be a more streamlined RPG than The Outer Worlds, lacking features that were thought to be Obsidian staples, such as all-killable NPCs, strictly optional companions, etc.

I think the area where Avowed might be able to improve on The Outer Worlds is in the fundamentals of gameplay design and tuning, which felt like an afterthought in TOW. I feel like better itemization alone could make Avowed a more satisfying gameplay experience than TOW.

The story could be more interesting too, but that's a complete unknown. I've not been impressed with what I've seen of Avowed's moment-to-moment writing.

What will prove the difference is if they were able to make a decent amount of bespoke, authentic and worthwhile content / challenges / areas

From the looks of it they didn't manage to pull any off and it's a typical "game mechanics spread thinly over white toast" affair aka TOW

Hi.

Gosh some great discussion going on in the last few pages, so take a break and enjoy TEN beautiful images of The Living Lands. Expect a flurry of more information as the embargo lift draws near. Soon we shall all be enjoying a bottle of Wyrthoneg with a plate of Rauatai Cookies while sitting back at the local tavern sharing our adventures with one another.

You mean I'm forced to go on an adventure with the bitchy reddit-tier companions FORCED upon me? Why would they do that? For what purpose?

You can probably go solo most of the time, but they're in your camp and might be required for certain quests.

does obsidian does not know what sells?

They never knew what sells, this is why Feargus had to sell the studio to Microsoft in the first place. They blew themselves up trying to chase Larian with POE 2. Even Sawyer is public about how he doesn't "get" the people who loved BG3, you think the rest of Obsidian gets them better than him?

Feargus sold the company because that was always his goal, Avellone said so.

Yeah well, I don't remember the exact wording of announcements about The Outer Worlds' sales. It's been over five years. But I don't recall the use of "shipped x units"-type weasel words. There may have been announcements about the number of people who played the game, which isn't equivalent to sales due to Game Pass, but that means exactly what it says.

They used the specific words "sold through," no weaseling. Tim Cain's said over and over again it's his best-selling game by far. A lot of cope from people who refuse to believe it really was a success. Chatter on the internet doesn't reflect the masses, just look at how KCD2 was wall-to-wall negativity before release and then it sold over 2 million right out the gate, 90% positive rating on Steam. Once again, Jeff Vogel was right https://bottomfeeder.substack.com/p/video-game-thoughts-bonus-bag-4:

Vogel's 1st Law of Video Game Visibility: "No matter how passionate an online 'controversy' about a game is, 99% of its players will never even know about it."

The same may also be true of Avowed, or perhaps not, who can predict the tastes of the masses? If that were possible, the publishers would never release a bomb again.
