That story is over.

well, they could do something completely unrelated (both gameplay- and story-wise), just like Fallout 3:Oblivion edition was to the original Fallout.

Fixed.
In all seriousness, they should leave the franchise alone. Unless they let Obsidian revive it (even then, I wouldn't hold my breath), it's more than certain an undisputable disaster is what we will eventually recieve.

Well if it's a rat god, I guess it could be done.

Then you move to a village where god-folks ask you to get the nearby cave rid of the god-goblins and and god-orcs who regularly attack the village of lower god denizens....

Obsidian won't be doing BG3 - that's for sure. And even if BG3 is going to happen any time soon - it surely won't be a good game - Bioware just renewed their rights to it this year.

So if what you say is true, then the only one that could make BG 3 is Bioware?

where do you know that, link, please?

I'm curious where he gets his information too. You seem so SURE skyway - so positive.
Even Sawyer's "sweet and tyte" Aliens RPG thread wasn't as teasing as this.
Part time strippers. All of them.

Well, people would surely find a way to continue it. No doubt.

But you guys should take note that a new BG would have to be 4th edition. Which takes place a bit later, eh? And I'd just guess that this would be in contrast to a direct sequel to BG2 ToB.
And since 4th ED changed a lot of the planes and stuff (yeah, I'm not really well informed on that), this might also be in contrast to a direct sequel.

Of course, you could just use the "old" story and setting and 4th ED rules for characters, combat, etc. But, really, how likely is that?

The game p. much finishes with fates of all characters sealed once and for all and your character who was the base of the storyline either becomes a god or lives his life without adventures. I can't imagine how can it be fun to play god or continue the "retired Chosen One" story without it becoming too lame and too forced.

And why BG3? Why not start something new from scratch in Faerun? The world is pretty big, varied and fits for new franchises.

Because of the name.
Baldur's Gate is pretty known. This goes for BG1, BG2 and ToB. And remember that there also were those Dark Alliance mutations.
This is pretty similar to Fallout 3. Of course they could have made a game in a post-apocalyptic world similar to the one of Fallout and call it something else.

And if the name "Baldur's Gate 3" would give a larger profit than "Waterdeep Tales", why not take it? Spoken from a publisher's perspective. And those are the ones that will give or not give the funds.

You know, I don't really buy this name bullshit. D&D nerds who bought and played BG will buy another D&D game(unless it's a semi action MMOG with less than 10 levels). I don't believe there are console Joes who, when see the name "Baldur's Gate 3: X-Treme", recall that "Hey, back in 99 I played this game which I barely remember now. Should buy this most def!". I doubt xboxers will care if a game has a "3" in it and supposedly some old skool roleplaying acclaim.

Nah, sheep has a point. Even among the 'younger' players, the name Baldur's Gate is pretty well known. In most non-RPG forums the majority usually seem to agree that BG2 is the best RPG ever, although I suppose Oblivion, Mass Effect and now Fallout 3 might have stolen some supporting voices.

Then why didn't BIO just call NWN BG3 then? And, oh btw, even without the Bg name, NWN was BIO's most successful game. *shrug*

I'm just guessing, but I imagine they wanted to create an entirely new franchise, especially due to the addition of the toolset, DM client, etc.

Or, they wanted to cash in on the epic AOL Games MMO smash hit of the same name:

The game originally cost USD$6.00 per hour to play. As the years progressed, Internet connection costs dropped, AOL and NWN membership grew, the servers became faster and the hourly player charge declined. As a result of these upgrades, the capacity of each server grew from 50 players in 1991 to 500 players by 1995. Ultimately the game became a free part of the AOL subscriber service.

Near the end of its run in 1997 the game had 115,000 players and typically hosted 2,000 adventurers during prime evening hours, a 4000% increase over 1991.

Dear Lord. $6 an hour. I can't even imagine how much cash some people must've blown, gvien how addicting MMO's can be.

A 4th edition Baldur's Gate would suck ass, no matter who made it.

As already stated, there's no good way to continue the bhaalspawn storyline, and what's a Baldur's gate game without bhaalspawns?

He's talking about Bhaalspawns. Since the main plot in BG was about the protagonist being one, to be a true BG game the story would have to revolve around the Bhaalspawns in one way or another. The saga was closed with ToB, so a sequel wouldn't make sense. A prequel? D&D wise it would be a clusterfuck. Maybe if you play as "some other Bhaalspawn" in the same timeline as the originals ; that possibly could work.

No...only another time of troubles makes sense for any kind of sequel connected to originals.

Yeah, I think Baldur's Gate 3 could do well without continuing the story (ToB's ending did a good job of closing the story arc, I think) and instead just focus on the things that made BG what it is - good exploration elements, great combat, some good companions (hey, we may as well see Minsc and Boo's glorious return here, lads!)
Seeing Obsidian's past projects, I really think that if there's one mainstream developer in the world that could pull it of, it's these guys.

No more Mincs and Boo. I tire of those fuckers. They were cool in BG, but in BG2 they overplayed those guys a bit too much. It stopped being silly-funny and turned into silly-retarded.

Probably because it was supposed to have a totally different engine and purpose... multi-player PnP emulation and module construction, rather producing yet another than shitty, boring, emo- Forgotten Realms 'tale'. NWN brought in a new kind of gamer who would not have been interested in BG3.

Because firstly, they used the name of the original NWN (1991 AOL MMORPG), since much of the focus was multiplayer and GM mode. Or did you think that the name "Neverwinter Nights" was actually made up by BioWare? They actually bought the name to lure the pre-existing fans of the original NWN.

And secondly, back then Interplay still had the license to use the title "Baldur's Gate".

Did you think the cretaors of the AOL made up the Neverwinter Nights name? No, they didn'. Dumbas. It's actually a FR city. OMGZ!

Um... At the time Interplay had the rights to use the title 'Neverwinter Nights' too. Afterall, without Interplay, BIO oculdn't have amde *any* D&D games at the time. They secured the rights to continue with NWN through lawsuits, and getting Atari. The same thing likely would have happened with a BG3.

Yeah, as shown above, all 1000 of them. LMAO
