I remember seeing alternative portrait for Viconia from BG2 demo, but I tried to look for it with a quick search but couldn't find it again. It was pretty shit so no wonder they changed it.

The BG2 portrait artist was a coomer who traced porn, yes.

Gaider remarked that one of the artists watched porn at work and nobody cared. :M

Zdenka Podkapova was never penetrated on camera. So it doesn't count as porn.

Anyway, he changed the shape of the eyes so it could be counted as another person entirely :)

I could never get over what they did to Jaheira

BG2 portrait style is pretty lame compared to BG1 (I know they are just overpainted photo, but they look nice at least). Both of games' portraits are light years behind in quality compared to GLORIOUS portraits of IWD series tho

Icewind's portraits reflect the game's wintry theme perfectly, while the BG ones are in a more general fantasy style. I've no idea why they have chosen this 'exotic' look for BGII.

I don't think either one has better portraits than the other. Some in BG1 are better and some in BG2 are better. BG1 Edwin is definitely better. BG1 Jaheira is sexier, but the BG2 version looks more like a half-elf and her facial expression makes her look like a total bitch (which she is). Maybe it's because I spent more time with Everquest growing up than D&D but I always imagined half-elves having pointy ears.

525-imoen

BG1 Imoen looks too old for the little sister role and a little overweight. BG2 Imoen is much younger and cuter. The Siege version sucks but everything about Siege sucks.

and of course the best Imoen is Alyson Hannigan Imoen

I always wondered what percentage of BG players picked one of the NPC portraits and never got to meet that NPC in their canon version

But even if you don't agree, there's just no way you can argue with regards to paperdolls and avatars. Here BG1 wins with such a huge margin it should be obvious to everyone.

Really, as someone who never grew up on BG1 avatar "art" most of them feels like heavily edited cosplayer photos. With the cosplayers being nerds that tried too hard to "look cool in fantasy settings."

I guess this is just Codex's older is better mentality.

You (or Riddler or Nifft Batuff for that matter) clearly don't know what an avatar is. You're talking about the portraits. Either that or I am getting old and dementia is setting in. In any case, I am talking about the actual units in game, which are vastly superior in OG BG. Someone already posted a comparison where you can clearly see why.

The portraits in Baldur's Gate (both 1 and 2) were worse than those used in the two Ravenloft games and the Menzoberranzan one by SSI. They should just have names and no portraits and just get the player to use their imagination.

Post more portraits from all the games mentioned, so we can actually compare. They're all in the avatar gallery.

SSI graphics were cartoony and those portraits wouldn't have fit the style of BG.

While we're on the topic of BG portraits, can anyone please explain what the hell is going on with Coran's hair? Does he have a weird comb over where the right side of his face has longer hair than the left?

Looks like an assymetrical curtained hairstyle, a perfect fit for a scumbag backstabbing rogue or narcisstic bard.
