Brand new footage of the new Baldur's Gate. Can't wait!

Honestly that displays the trouble with RTwP: you're ceaselessly interrupting the flow that real time combat supposedly adds.

Also I hope those voicelines are placeholder. "Into the fraaay!" and so many others don't even sound like they were done by dedicated VAs. If they're not placeholder, I'm even more sceptical about the writing and story here than with Larian (which is saying something).

Oh, how exciting. The first two times that happens.

It's like those "using the skill" icons in Wasteland 2. So fun, watching little icon filling up with color for 5 seconds FOR FOUR THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED ELEVENTH TIME.

Do these people ever learn?

lol come on man. Isn't it the clear lesson of the past half decade in RPGs that "oldschool IE RTwP fans" are an impossible to satisfy, highly overrated niche?

This argument would hold more weight if only the majority of games of this type produced lately weren't all mostly mediocre.

But i get what you are saying. nuBioware faggots just want their Dragon Age garbage.

The va is bad in Kangmaker as well, but you can turn the combat barks off.

Not dimming the whole screen so you can watch a 11 second nonsense animation for the 100th time.

Agree, but as long as the roll involves real C&C I'll be ok with that. That roll in the vid didn't even net your char exp if I am not mistaken (?). So what's even worse than useless animation dice rolls is useless animation dice rolls for flavor only.
I really hope the rolls don't exist just to tell you that "hey, this game is based on D&D".

I thought Infinitron 's point was that y'all rate everything "mediocre" that tries to satisfy the niche.

Some DMs grant levels at appropriate-for-the-story moments, so maybe they won't have xp in that sense at all. That's what I'd do tbh. Balancing would be so much easier too and discourages trash mob spam.

I think it's definitely the case that there will be no XP on the majority of these skill checks. Part of Disco Elysium dev's input ( Volrath ) when Larian asked them to consult, was making sure that a failed check doesn't feel like a penalty that would encourage save scumming. XP rewards for successful rolls would of course encourage save scumming.

The problem with that argument is that any attempt to satisfy the niche so far HAVE been mediocre, starting with Pillars which was supposed to be this grand return to the formula but instead it tripped over itself and broke its own face to the ground.

Out of all of the games that have tried to resurrect the glory of those old RPGs, only Pathfinder seems to have met with favor (from what i can see, i have yet to play it).

It is really funny that a Pathfinder game looks more like a Baldurs Gate game than a DnD one, it is hilarious, Biowhore RTwP fans must be on suicide right watch now.

We were on suicide watch but owlcat gave us hope and a reason to live again. Larian can fuck up a beloved series all they want because owlcat will be there to take in all the refugees.

There's way too much bitching about trash mobs in this thread. Do you guys only want to fight bosses and nothing else? Do you just hate combat? I don't get it. Must be a lot of visual novel fans here.

Well the good rtwp games are few and far between. The last two good ones were kingmaker and drakensang river of time, which are 8 years apart. Anything that obsidian managed to produce was between mediocre and downright terrible....ahhh tranny.

There can be very tense encounters that aren't against bosses. You'd be surprised how a fairly standard bandit encounter suddenly turns deadly by having 2 archers in a difficult-to-reach position ambushing you. Or pitting a low level party against a 5+ level higher mob. I DM'd a Vampire: The Masquerade game once and had a wolf (not werewolf) attack a newly risen Gangrel just as he was waking up in a forest as a vampire, the surprise factor is also important.

At least DE skill checks had actual C&C by getting a clue earlier, being able to resolve stuff in a better way, getting legit information, which in the context of that dialog-based game mattered etc.

Pure flavor skill checks would be huge decline here.
