Man, I didn't know that, There is only protection against petrification gaze attacks in the description of Potion of Mirrored Eyes so it kinda never crossed my mind, Thank you very much.

I kinda overestimated Selaad, he died kinda fast, I read that Flame Tongue is very effective against Werewolves so I tried it since Khalid has 3 points in Long Sword and it worked great. There was some differences tho in the island, The Chief woman normally goes aggro and I kill her before leaving but this time I had some options and I was able to convince her peacefully, cape girl and the mother showed up to my defense. This could probably be by BG1NPCs or UB. kinda fresh change.

Edit:
The trip to Werewolves island took very long, I finished Durlag's Tower at day 57, went straight to the island and returned from the island at day 105.

It's a bit of obscure BG knowledge. I've read about it first on some old gaming forums years ago. (the good old days when easy tutu first came out... I still remember the green water bug :D)

Is there a way to see what is killing you?

I am about to do Saravok's battle, I buffed and everything but I keep dying without even triggering the combat or traps. The moment I entered his base, I buffed and now after a couple of seconds I just die for no reason. Is there a side effect to buff, save, reload? I do that to save time on the durations of the buffs and I am using almost all my potions but the moment I hit unpause, seconds later I am dead for no reason.

Edit:

In the last image, PC looks like he is petrified, I drank a protection but didn't work.

Edit2:
Yea, I think I figured it out, I used a murky Potion of Invulnerability by mistake and it made PC polymorph and die I think.

Beat Sarevok, Fight was pretty easy with the overkill buffs. One thing I really regret is I forgot to pick up the Golden Pantaloon, I kinda wanted to get all the pantaloons to ToB. Managed to pick it up after.

Edit3:
Imoen is a Lv11 thief in BG2, no Mage Levels at all for her. I might try Keeper to get her to Lv1 and drop her out of the party and see if that will fix her or something. I am not completely sure she will be fixed tho, her stats and health will probably not go down, But other than that I am not sure what to do to fix her.

Edit4:
Yea, sorry for the spam. I kicked everyone out and went to the Ducal Palace but when BG2 begins, it kinda works but because of the ToB style NPC tweak I added, she starts at lv1 because of the BGT transition or something and I need to level her all 11 levels in thief.

Thinking of exporting and then importing my character, I think that will definitely hopefully fix the problem and also allow me safely to change the mods.

You can also edit NPCs with Nearinfinity:
https://www.idi.ntnu.no/~joh/ni/download.html
It is not as easy to use as the Keeper, however. NPCs can be accessed by editing the game saves (make a back up if you decide to do so). You could write down all the info about Imoen from BG1 and then adjust the BG2 version accordingly.

PS
Nearinfinity is worth a look anyway, because you can learn some interesting tidbits about items, npcs, monsters and dialogs with it. (I think even the dialogs cut from the game, like Valygar's romance. Why did bioware developers ever think that the annoying cleric was the better choice, I'll never understand.)

Since I have full party, I kinda didn't want to dual Imoen and lose thief skills for long time. I think she will still automatically hopefully change back even in BGT.

Nope she will still be a thief unless you dual her in BG1. All the NPCs that go over will be exactly what they were at the end of BG1. I'm pretty sure Minsc was still dead in his cage after I killed him once.

Edit:
Yea, I probably could have held off from leveling her after she was lv6 or 7 and then dualed her when she got enough exp, but I kinda didn't think of that at the time.

Nah. When you dual all the XP over your current level goes away and you start at zero in your new class. That's why if you are going to dual you need to dual right when you gain a level.

edit: Oh I see you say this for yourself already.

Thanks, I didn't know that.

I am kinda experiencing a lot of problems starting BG2 at the moment. I re-installed completely and tried following Xor's list of mod order, I didn't install a lot of his mods but I did like a few and would like to try them and decided to import my character instead to see if it works.

Imoen now has 7 thief and 24 mage, I think its really bugged. It happened before too when I first started BG1 and I uninstalled the tweaks to make their stats consistent so its similar to BG2's and I thought that helped it work but it doesn't seem to work at all right now, I think its the only mod that affected an NPC stats AFAICT.

I still have my old game folder fully backed up just in case, but I hope I can find a way to make this work, since I kinda hated how that map was with everything too crowded. I also did make a mistake by installing ToB's related components of SCS which I am most certain I'll uninstall before starting ToB.

Edit:
She still only have up to level 4 spells unlocked. I don't remember how much HP she had in BG1 but I think its a little high tho, other stats could also be affected.

I wish if I can skip the starting torture scene, it takes about a min or 2 and I just want to check Imoen's stats.

Edit2:
Nevermind, I removed ToB Style NPCs, Kicked the entire party and went thro the BGT transition and its working as normal.

I think I will go to my old setup, for some reason one of the mods is causing a stutter when I move the party and move the camera around at the same time. I don't feel like trying to fix it, I wasted a lot of time already just to fix Imoen. Tho I really love the map, it shows the rest of the Forgotten Realms I think, its pretty good.

Edit3:
I kinda thought Ilyich will be very tough with SCS, but it was really easy. I was expecting something like this to bitch about:

I guess SCS is a lot toned down than Tactics or something, something to look forward to I guess and hope to get better.

I had the stutter problem too; I can't remember what caused it or what fixed it, but I'm pretty sure the log I posted was from after I had fixed it. I created a new installation for the playthrough I'm doing now so I can't really check.

Messing with your installation after you've started is a bad idea.

The SCS improved fights are easier and "fairer" than the tactics versions, which is why I go with SCS over tactics. If you're really masochistic you can install both.

You can actually install Improved Illyich together with SCS. Some of the battles are compatible (SCS lists which, and these are the most fun anyway), and some of the SCS battles (like Bodhi) offer a Tactics version with SCS scripting. If you are not that far into the game, you can just reinstall and add the compatible Tactics parts.

If you really want something to bitch about, I think the Solaufein Eclipse fight is probably one of the toughest (and cheesiest) mod added encounters. It should be possible to trigger it with the console, so you don't even have to romance the smurf to get it. Although it is worthwhile to pay Bodhi a visit with him, because then he gets kidnapped too (and he makes for one nasty vampire).

I am still kinda of a newbie, I haven't even installed the caster's components in SCS. Will first try and get more accustomed to mages by the time I finish BG2 and hopefully ToB with SCS. I was kinda worried tho about Ilyich being too tough like in the video but wasn't the case.

There is also a few modders who started working on making Tactics compatible with BG2EE so I might try it there first after its finished hopefully, there's already a beta version with only one component missing, Improved Irenicus.

BG's magic system can be summed up as "arcane magic wins at everything except trap removal". :D

But if you want to learn about mages, then SCS caster AI is a good start; I'd suggest giving it a try. You don't have to start with the toughest option - all buffs at the beginning of the battle - straight away. And in my opinion SCS casters are still better than Tactics casters, which just use a lot of crazy abilities (that aren't in the original game, so they can be quite confusing).

Insert clever insult here
Use the option in SCS to give mages pre-buffed long duration buffs but not short-duration ones. That gives them Mage Armour and Stoneskin while still leaving you a little window at the start of the combat before they buff up fully with short-duration buffs.

Note that pre-buffing your party in most caster engagements is pointless with SCS as all of them start by casting Dispel on you anyway.

There is no option for long duration? all options says short duration.
SCS ReadMe said:
  • Option 1: Mages are always allowed to cast spells instantly at the start of combat. This is basically the same way magic works in SCS, and is tactically the hardest challenge; however, on occasion it might appear a bit unrealistic.
  • Option 2: Mages are allowed to cast spells instantly at the start of combat only when they are created near the PC (e.g. enemy mages teleporting in to ambush you). This is basically how Tactics handles this (though I think I keep to the rules more strictly than Tactics does). It's somewhat less challenging, but since even casters whom you catch off-guard have contingencies and sequencers to defend themselves with, mages can slam up defences pretty quickly.
  • Option 3: Mages never cast spells instantly. (Though, again, they can very quickly use contingencies and sequencers to defend themselves.)
  • Option 4: Option 1 for BG1, option 2 for BG2. The logic here is that many mages in BG2 teleport in, but hardly any do in BG1 - partly because they are lower level, partly because of different design philosophies. (For what it's worth, this is my own preferred option.)
  • Option 5: Mages use short-duration spells at the start of combat, but only if the difficulty is set to Hard or Insane.
Should I go with 4 like the author prefers? I am not using HLA component, I found the vanilla BG2 mages hard enough, I kinda don't want to make it too hard before getting use to it. I assume I should choose the same for Priests as well but the author says "enemy clerics are at a huge disadvantage on options 2-5. (For this reason, my own preference is to use option 1 for clerics.)".

I think I will also use the components for Beholder and mind flayers, since I don't know which is best I think I might go with what Xor chose.
- Don't give beholder rays any chance of burning through spell protections; beholder antimagic blocks all spells, including harmful ones, for a round (simulates D&D rules)
- Smarter mind flayers -> Illithids have only original-game resistances; Illithids can see through invisibility

He also chose these for Mages and Priests, he installed most of the components so I am not sure if it will make it too hard or fairer.
- Mages never cast short-duration spells instantly at start of combat
- Priests never cast short-duration spells instantly at start of combat
My party for BG2 is PC:R/C -- Jaheira -- Viconia -- Yoshimo/Imoen -- Edwin, Last spot I am thinking of leaving it open just in case there are party members I can pick temporarily for their quests or rescue or something like Mazzy, Keldorn, Nalia and Valygar.

I installed Ascension and Unfinished Business, should I delete file ar4500 that belongs to Bhaalspawn Powers of DG or will the file from Unfinished Business overwrites it? I read that the file in Ascension is bugged and I should use the one from Unfinished Business.

That's because the long duration spells are on by default:
"SCS II allows mages to cast some spells instantly, to simulate casting before battle begins (in BG2 it's very difficult to script enemies to do the sort of pre-battle buffing that PCs can do). They will always do this with any spell with a duration of more than a couple of hours (e.g. Stoneskin, Melf's Minute Meteors). There are three options, though, for the casting of short duration spells. (Note that whichever option you choose, mages will still use contingencies and spell sequencers.)" - from the readme ;)

The easiest option is number 3. I've used option number 5, because it is flexible; if you find you can't deal with buffed mages, you can just lower the difficulty.

PS
You can actually defend your arcane spellcasters from dispel with spell immunity: abjuration (just like spell immunity: divination protects them from being true sighted; Tactics was the first mod, I think, to use that combination, because you can have more than one spell immunity on). I haven't used clerics or druids all that much, so I don't remember what defenses they have.

As for offensive spells, one easy way to slay buffed mages in Tactics was to use a spell trigger with the acid cloud spell (I think it was called death fog?). Multiple clouds in one place will tick fast enough to eat through all the mirror images, and the damage (provided the mages don't have protection from acid or acid resistance) will cause casting failure. This was especially fun with liches, because they move so slow, they won't get out of the impacted area.

edit: Druids do get one nasty spell: Nature's beauty. Permanent blindness with no save, and blindness is something the AI in this game can't deal with.

I might be wrong but I don't think its gotten any harder dealing with mages now. I haven't encountered any high levels yet or fought a Lich but all the mages I have encountered in the Slums and Docks and the in-between travels don't seem any different than they used to except for the Stoneskin on some of them. I thought they will be noticeably harder than they used to be. Rogues tho, are a lot dangerous in BG2 then they were in BG1, aside from the fight in the top of the Iron Thron Building, here in BG2 they backstab and instantly disappear, even if I use Invisibility Purge or True Sight, they are still a hassle to deal with.

I used to go to the shops and steal everything I need after buying a few Potions of Master Thievery but because of the changes Rogue Rebalancing made, I can't do that anymore, I still have most of the starting equipment. I would like to go do Nalia's quest to get the Flail of Ages but I don't know how hard the improved trolls will be without more preparations.

I also started another run in BGEE with SCS but I'll be trying to go completely solo with an FMT class and no experience cap throughout the saga, I added all the SCS options for now and I will most likely not use the move the special items and HLA in BG2. Tarnesh did not have Stoneskin on and I managed to interrupt him from casting Mirror Image and killed easily. Silke was very easy, mainly because she acted kinda dumb, Stoneskin effect showed up on her as soon as she aggroed (no casting) then she casted Mirror Image and I thought it was over but she engaged me in melee combat instead of casting lighting spell.

You can easily test SCS high level mages by either:
a) triggering the cowled wizard by casting in the streets (unless you've already paid the license); do it enough times, and you will get to face the final group (they are named unlike the anonymous rest),
b) looking for the hidden lich in one of the inns, forgot exactly which one, but I think it's near the city gates.

I went to the Lich and he casted True Sight when Yoshimo entered while being invisible. Then he casted a contingency and killed Yoshimo. I think that means it worked, I hope. IIRC in vanilla, he used to cast protection on himself first then start attacking me with Time Stop.

Do the other Colwed Wizards comments or say something new if I killed the named Cowled Wizards? or just treat it as if I have the license and just stop attacking?

Thank you.

Edit:
Yea, Protection against Undead doesn't seem to be working against the Lich as well, when I used it and attacked him, he casted contingency again and killed me instead of standing still.

That group is the final attack and then they shouldn't bother you anymore (unlike the low reputation guys who never get bored of attacking you...). And they drop high level scrolls, so it's more profitable than paying the license.

Does that fuck with your rep though? I've never killed them because I thought it would get me negative rep.

Have I been paying pointless racket money to a bunch of low life scum for years!? I feel so used.

I'm 99% sure that killing Cowled Enforcers doesn't affect reputation, unless you have some mod that changes things.

It doesn't affect your rep, and after you kill a few groups you get a named guy that after you defeat, you have a defacto license to use magic in the city.

I wouldn't know, because my evil sorceress had the lowest possible reputation at that time. :D (and yes, you can finish the game with that easily, but I wouldn't recommend it for parties, because the low reputation police never stops coming).

Apparently doing Boo's disappearance quest from UB, grants free magic license. His quest triggered while doing Edwin's quests for the thieves.

Torgal's fight was pretty tough. I cheesed the fight or something. Torgal can see thru invisibility so I went there while on Sanctuary and lured him to one of the rooms and closed all the other doors so rest of his group doesn't follow when the fight start. After killing him I went and killed the rest of the group. Its mainly the 2 Yuan-Tis that are with him, they cast Breach & Dispel magic and then Torgal can energy drain and slow and kills pretty fast.

I hated the Spirit Trolls I think, they kept disappearing similar to the Phase Spiders but almost every second but without jumping to other members, since I didn't have except for mostly excellent weapons and I couldn't damage them with that, mostly used Spiritual Hammer and Minsc who had Lilarocr and was very under equipped armor wise.

Unseeing Eye was kinda still mostly a cakewalk with the shield of Balduran thankfully, even tho Beholder's can take my Shield away and then stun or dominate, they are still somewhat easy to kill. Not looking forward to the Beholder's base later tho with the Hive Mothers and Elder Orbs. I also found a Eilistrae's Boon +1 circlet but doesn't seem to be working, It says that it increase Magic Resistance by 10% and +1 Saving Throws, tried it on Viconia since she has a natural 65 MR I think but its doesn't increase at all, other characters as well. Same thing for saving throws. Keldorn's is now gone.

Is it better to wait until chapter 3 or 6 to kill Liches in the city and try doing Kangaxx's quest or is there any helpful items I can acquire early to make things easier? I am thinking of doing Watcher's Keep at least to level 2 now to get the Poison flail head and upgrade the Flail of Ages to +4 early (I installed tweak), not 100% sure it will upgrade but I think its better than nothing, it will probably make things a lot easier to deal with if it works. I am also thinking of keeping the Real Illithium and upgrade the Mace of Disruption later.

Would like to do more quests but I would like to finish gearing myself better before over leveling, I don't want Undead to upgrade to Liches while I am unprepared. I still have Edwin's and Bard's quests and Planer's Sphere for easier quests I think in the city. I have 2 quests related to Temple Ruins but I am kinda uneasy about dealing with Thaxll'ssillyia and the improved Shade Lord.

Party: PC: C10/R9 -- Jaheira 9/9 -- Viconia 11 -- Yoshimo 13 -- Edwin 11

Edit:
Edwin's quest, Lich killed itself by Gate I think, summoned Glabrezu and since I wasn't in sight, they started killing each other. IIRC this is the easiest Lich so trying to practice on him on how to handle Liches.

This guide also looks pretty good, formatting and some links are kinda broken but its made by the same dude who played Tactics with SCS.

Edit2:
Yea, I don't think I understand Liches at all. I used Breach to kill all his protections so I can damage him and kill him but nope, it gets reflected and log doesn't say anything about it. I managed to kill him somehow in one of the tries, Breach I think worked but Edwin's quest bugged out a little, when Glaberzu killed the Lich, Edwin teleported and got the scroll, but when I killed it legitly Edwin talked but there was no teleportation or scroll in his inventory.

Checked these for ideas on how to fight Liches, Beamdog and GameBanshee. First one covers Liches in SCS, second normally.

Also Slimes, how the hell do you turn back, I turned Edwin into a slime so he can get the Lich to empty his spells on him like one of the guides suggested but fight lasted about half an hour and manged to empty the Lich's spells I think and Edwin is still in his damn slime form. Lich kept doing Dragon Fear over and over without me able to damage him at all.
