Started playing this finally. Super fun.

Veteran is very challenging (nice that I don’t have to crank difficulty to max right away).

I’ve had two runs get decently far (to taking 2 skull ranked quests). First one was ended by a group of 7 or 8 undead; I couldn’t down them fast enough, and since I hadn’t fought any undead before I didn’t realize they would reanimate (unless fatally killed or something?) and also reanimate my guys(?). That stuff is super fun to discover even though it ended my run.

Second run I saw a marauding band of goblins and thought, “Ah, goblins are usually pretty weak, let’s see how it goes.” Killed me even with a height advantage, haha.

I decided to start playing lone warrior runs, since while the grimdark “pay refugees to spam shield wall on your flanks” is thematic and interesting, I’m opposed morally. So I’m enjoying getting one or two companions at the start and really playing around height advantage and positioning (esp. if I can buy a pitch fork or spear) to win the first few battles.

I initially wanted to use bows more, but it seems like bows have lower base accuracy than crossbows? The tool tips mention skill requirements to use effectively but no hard numbers. The LoS is pretty wonky sometimes, too, and almost no one you recruit cheaply has good ranged skill. Still seems really good if you can set up a few high skill archers to play from high ground or the flanks (as long as you aren’t fighting undead).

Otherwise I really dig the setting. No/low magic but mythical creatures exist. Good classic fantasy.

Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Shadorwun: Hong Kong BattleTech Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I helped put crap in Monomyth
Wiedergangers and Fallen Heroes have a flat percent chance to reanimate every round until you win the battle. Wiedergangers will stop reanimating permanently if you behead them. Heroes never stop, even with no head. Necromancers can also raise corpses as wiedergangers. If the corpse had equipment on when it died, the new Wiederganger will have it too (so beware a necromancer fight where your star bro dies).

Goblins are exactly as they are from standard fantasy, but they're played correctly by the AI- they skirmish, they swarm, and they carry tools that accentuate their strengths. In standard RPGs they're starter-tier trash; in Battle Bros you don't want to be fucking with them until you have a solid team built. By far the most aggravating enemy type in the game IMO, they were done superbly by the devs.

Crossbows receive a flat bonus to hit (I think it's +10 but I can't remember), so they're much better for your bros in the early game. In the later game, when you (theoretically) have bros with 80+ Ranged Attack, bows become generally better since they allow 2 shots per round standing still, don't require AP to reload, and absolutely wreck low/no armor enemies.

You're really going to love this game start to finish I bet :D

Kaivokz it's a great game and it's awesome to see someone enjoy & discover it anew.

If your bro falls against undead, one thing you can do is loot their bodies so they don't raise with it all in their hand.

I favour crossbows because they often end up being easier to get sure hits with shittier bros, but as per above details it's up to you

Fuck, i want to play it again after looking at my old screens.
I want to go back in time to when i still played actual murderhobos, not optimized builds.

First time i played, my party got wrecked by bandits on the first mission i picked, they killed half my men.
After getting fresh recruits, got wrecked again and most of my remaining "veterans" died.

Since this is on sale right now, should I buy Blazing Deserts (which is not on sale) with it, or just the first two DLCs for now and wait for BD to go on sale?

No problem to just buy the sale stuff, and add BD later. Every DLC is a pretty modular "add more meat to bone everywhere" thing. Though you won't regret getting it all.

Funny thing is, Battle Brothers heavily inspired my current Kickstarter campaign with playable bust "miniatures" for tabletop games.

Are they 3D printed or done by hand, SmartCheetah?

I mean, those pictures are renders of my sculpts and designs. I'm trying to print every single one of them in resin to make sure they print well so people won't complain that I've sold them shit. Haven't had single problem so far except small things. I'll try to post some pictures of physical, printed pieces in next few days. Painted some of them, but I'm a newbie mini-painter.

Yeah, so I took a caravan escort. Started with 6 bros. 3 spearmen, 2 shield/spear, and 1 two handed sword.

Ambushed by a large group of brigand raiders. Didn't lose anyone.

Ambushed by a second large group of brigand raiders. Lost one spear bro.

Ambushed be a group of 13 brigand thugs and archers... lost the other two spear bros and a shield bro because he broke, even though he was winning the fight. wtf, how did I lose so badly to thugs? (edit- the answer is that they surrounded me and got to my spear bros) They also got one of the donkeys and all of the caravan guards died in the last fights.

Fine. Three fights, which is more than I was expecting, and I'm almost to the destination.

Get attacked by alps. wtf are alps? I don't know. I decide to cut and run, but one teleports right up to my 2h sword bro. Okay, I'll try to cut him down... hit him and three more alp things spawn around my last shield bro, put him to sleep and kill him immediately. Then they spam sleep on my last bro and I miss four 70% swings in a row against the one who is sleeping me. All bros down.

Alright. So I'm never taking a 2 skull escort again.

Alright. So I'm never taking a 2 skull escort again.
19 out of 20 three skull caravan escorts are completely quiet.
You also kinda need escort missions to generate unigues.
I found that caravan escort missions are best done when you have a full complement of battle-ready brothers, because it discourages smaller bands of enemies from attacking you. You want that when doing escort missions, because you have no control over your movement, so you can't really pick your fights for the duration of that mission. It's not always the rule, but I had more success that way.
