i mean economically, how to get the many thousands to buy 2handed weapons and armors with 200-300 hp

to outfit 4 bros with 2handed and scale armor i need around 25000 gold which is very difficult to amass in 70-80 days, getting them from other merc companies is very risky,i once lost 6 guys trying to get a fucking lammellar armor off a hedge knight.

do not underestimate repairing damaged orc/goblin/undead equipment except maybe shields and woodsticks. and forget about selling equipment in a first store you encounter

Exactly... The orc axe for example sells for around 300 gold when 100% men! Repair that shit

By the way I can confirm (as we were talking about this some pages ago) that having a good cleaver bro is really good. Any enemy that bleeds and isnt very shield-y .... will hurt a lot. Also the decapitation crushes enemy morale.

Also yesterday I failed a 150 gold caravan run between two cities in maximum half day distance. I got ambushed in the only little forest in between by ~30 undead, mostly wiedergangers but also 7-8 ancient legionairies. The battle was not a real problem to win... But because it was an ambush in a forest and we were skattered, the donkey was placed in a chokepoint that I couldnt pass because of the legios who simultaneously slaughtered it faster than I could crush them. Poor donkey :negative:

What's the effect of background? Initial stats? Any (updated) documentation regarding this?
A few backgrounds have special abilities - they are listed in the background description (killer on the run has +10% chance to hit the head for exemple)
Other than that its about stat ranges - yes. For exemple hunters can have ranged up to 60 iirc which makes them potentially the best (?) archers. The backgrounds that read in description "not used to hard labour" have lower fatigue min and max values. The opposite is true as well. Same with "no combat experience" (like monks, minstrels, etc...).
The third difference are the events associated with each background (sometimes with combination of 2 backgrounds at the same time in your band). Some backgrounds have really good events, some have bad ones.

I'm considering whether I should restart.
The current game for some reason is slooooow.
Might be tied to the map layout, since it means constant long travels between cities to find some decent contracts.
Also, in ~50 days, I found 2(!) bros with an archer-centric background (actually 3, but the 3rd was too expensive) and both turned out to have shit ranged skill, despite having stars in it.
One of them got hit by an enemy throwing axe and died, the other is still in my band, even has 3 stars in ranged, but only 48 skill at lvl 4. :negative:
48 at level 4 is weak but with 3 stars he gets 4.5/level so with 7 level ups to 11 he will end at ~80. Not great but not bad either.
If you don't have towns with fletchers/"living of the surrounding woods" on the map then yes - archer-centric backgrounds are hard to come by. On the plus many backgrounds can be potentially good archers, "all" you need is ranged in mid 40s and 2~3 stars... It isn't that hard but since anyone can get it... you can't focus on any background to look for them.

Sorry to say, I have to say this greenskin-war has been underwhelming. Except the feeling of doom because of the sacked cities, that is rather cool. But there is no organization of defense it seems and most of the time It feels like I'm the only one to do anything about this menace. Starting to feel like the lone savior/chosen one here. And another thing, missions trigger sieges... I just left a fortress, traveled to another town and a saw a three skull contract there. Thought what the hell and took it. It was a for a siege in the fortress I left 2 minutes ago. Rather disappointing I have to say, and for some reason the army that escorted me there just went inside the castle and now except me to clean up the siege engine party that has a shit load of orcs and goblins. They just helped me for fuck sake with some other invading groups. It actually felt like they were concerned about this siege as well. But nope - "Mercenary, do the rest". So I'm guessing if I don't want to waste my mercenary company on cleaning up this mess and cancels the contract the fortress will fall...

Man, I wish it had more simulation in the game. It was a big mistake in my opinion that they removed this agenda-system and replaced it with this.

I just had a weirdly easy caravan run. Two skulls, about 1000 crowns. The destination was close as the crow flies, but the road was long as it went around a bay. I risked it because it was mostly plains and relatively populated, with fortresses along the way.

Turned out the caravan took the short way. It forded the bay -- there were shallows there. Trip took a few hours, no encounters, none even likely at all in that stretch. I will be keeping an eye out for re-runs.

I had almost the same situation yesterday - 3 skulls contract worth 1500 IIRC. Trip trough a shallow water, no encounters. And then, in destination point, there was re-run contract (2 sculls) and I taken that. I was attacked by 15 raiders/marksmen combo, but managed to kill them all.

Short trip not allways means safe trip.

I found a nice starting map:

2069967BC73F21154E0A5EA08992EEA9D1B53B5D

You start in the north, where you can trade Copper, Furs, Wood and Ham(?) between the five central settlements, one of them - Gunnsted - is a big town. Tools are cheap and travel time is low. Bonus: Axebro has Iron Lungs.

Yes, finding archer is problem.

Bowyers i tend to hire have around 42-45 with no stars.

So you probably want Poacher or (best) Hunter. Probably they wont have stars (1 is rare, 2 is very rare) but 2nd comes with around 45-48 in skill and hunters have like 55-60 in skill.

But you need have 2 (better 3) forest settlements to get them reliably.

You can find cheap melee with 55 in stat (with star) like daytaler even. But for archer you need either poacher or hunter or much costly background (like sellsword or witchunter).

Poachers and hunters are alrite, as are bitch hunters. Sellswords can also start with gud ranged in my experience.

Also my first archer was a tailor :M I think it's a good idea to look for arrer boyz among the cheap dudes that are "not used to physical labour".

They're all potential garbage or 'decent' merc.
I just dismissed like 5 fishermen from 2 harbors cities.
At least I got something useful out of them, nets.

Deserters can be decent archers especially hybrids because they have decent skills but low resolve.

Early game I hire anyone who costs < 100. If they're any good I give them suitable gear. If not, I give them an axe and put that cultist hood on them and then have them rush the enemy next encounter, drawing fire and maybe splitting a shield. At least they got a square meal and a moment of glory.

Eventually I find someone decent. I very rarely hire anyone who costs more than (cost of their gear + 150) or so. It sucks if I've paid north of 1k and get someone with thoroughly average stats.

If I'm looking for a dedicated midgame archer, then I go with hunters or poachers if available.

People seem to forget one important thing. Ranged attack has a 2 to 4 points per level increase rate. Compare it to 1 to 3 points for melee. It means that on average an archer will end with 10 more points from level ups (starts not included). Or in other words: two mercs, one a 45* ranged merc and another a 55* melee one, both at level 1, will end at level 11 in roughly the same spot skill-wise (on average of curse). And you would consider a merc with 55* in melee at level 1 ok-ish prospect for leveling (~80 at level 11). At least early/mid game.
It is hard to get "a low level and good archer" but good ranged bros are not AS hard to get as some people may think - in the long run that is.

But you can't afford mediocre archers. They must be really good in their job. Mediocre melee fighter still can stand with shield and not be completely useless, archer don't have this luxury.

Well, give him fast adaptation - that way he will hit something... eventually. Not the best perk but on archers is not bad. Or if the promising archer in question has decent melee - give him a pike for a few levels. Third option is a crossbow. In general - yea, it is a pain but if you don't have a choice... I found once a 57** ranged hunter but other than hunters it is rare to get someone with 50+ base ranged attack.
One problem is - i think - lack of traits that increase ranged attack. You have dexterous for melee attack but nothing like this for ranged. Or did i miss something ?
If the game will become mod-able one day the first thing i'll do is to add +5 ranged to dexterous trait. It only make sense and would make finding decent archers a little easier.

Anyone test city destruction in new update?
Is it work like in the old update or they change it for the better somehow?
Do cities still burn in 5 seconds after you go to another for resupply?
Do you still do not get any notifications?

Yeah I think we all notice that. There is some delay like the AI is "thinking" about its moves more. Happens more with archers for me

How does trading work?
Some of you guys cite it as an income source, and the wiki speaks highly of buying low and selling high, but wherever I look, the decent stuff is sold WAY above it's worth, no matter the size of the settlement or my relations with it.
There's some places where tools are 25gold cheaper, sometimes I can get bland rations for little less than their base worth, but that's not enough to generate a healthy profit.
The wiki also mentions you ought to be able to sell crafting components for 150% of their worth, but there's not a place in the world where they're willing to give me more than 50%.

Somebody mentioned repearing looted things like armor and such would be a nice additional cash income, but again, I can consider myself extremely lucky if I get offered 200 for a piece of armor with a base worth of 1500.

Is there some kind of trick to this stuff?
