IV, with VI not far behind. But i never played anything beyond VII. That one gave me brain cancer.

I still loathe the battle system, no matter how much incline is in the optional encounters.

I don't see Final Fantasy Tactics being a choice in the poll. :rpgcodex:
And for anyone going to list spin-offs like tactics and shit.
Fuck you.

To be fair Final Fantasy isn't really known for its great battle systems anyway and FF12 is one of the rare few mainline FF games that does have good encounters. Most of the series is populated by dogshit combat systems and equally banal encounters so I don't really understand why FF12 gets singled out the most. Its all been RTwP since FF4 anyway, the only difference is that you are able to move around freely during combat.

Can anyone explain me what's the deal with FF VI being constantly voted best in the series? The game is boring as shit, story is meh, and has a huge cast of totally unlikable characters...

Probably same reason as FFVII being voted as best in the series: First FF someone played. Otherwise, I can't find a single reason why this game is not boring as fuck.

Yes, yes it was. If it had that shitty story and characters though, it wouldn't have been a great first impression of the series though, would it? It had great artwork, great cast of characters, good story, fun boss battles.

Turning ATB off is a lie, all it does is pause time when in menus. It does not make it pure turn-based.

Deep in your subconscious mind spreading lies.
I feel sad. My favorite is probably X-2 but for the longest time I tried to like FF8. The first 1/3 was so good, but then the emo-ness, level scaling, plot losing focus, encounters becoming shit ruins it completely, beyond redemption.

Yea, the world of 8 is really nice at first, the cities are cool and the Gardens have some good content. I enjoyed the "realistic graphics". I still don't really get the love for 9 though - I get that it is a throwback but the characters are as annoying as the worst of Final Fantasy that I've seen. I find X and XII a lot more playable and replayable.

I like XII a lot. It caught a lot of flak but I suspect people didn't really get it at the time; the character automation scripts (here called Gambits) were excellent and light years ahead of what would come later in DA:O, the encounters were pretty good (especially the optional ones such as the toughest hunts) and the locations pretty varied.

I couldn't give two shits about the story or whatever, but the gameplay was really good to me. Equipment was good, enemy variety was pretty great, characters weren't all universally detestable, music was great (love me some Hitoshi Sakimoto). I suspect that people who complained about the game being too MMO-like didn't really play it and it was just a throwaway thing to say.

The only real major downside of the game in my opinion was the fact that everyone could excel at everything and have all skills, something that was corrected with the International version's remade license board. Which reminds me, I need to get back to it.
