Ah. I liked that one, although I didn't like the fact it isn't a major campaign but a bunch of little ones.

I liked 2 the most, the whole thing just clicked for me, but then, it was also my first one, so it had all the mystery and discovery. The music was really really good though. I liked the two campaigns with the various choices of rewards and so on.

3 was ok, but it just felt like 2, but with MORE MORE MORE everything. I also didn't really like the campaigns as much.

4 was interesting, but ultimately just seemed really dull.

Yes. But I guess you can get the Windows version to both work and with correct aspect ratio if you use a wrapper like DgVoodoo or something.
The DOSBox version has audio issues and hero movement is oddly choppy, do you know if the Windows version suffers from the same problems?

It's been a while since I played HoMM 2 last, but the only significant difference I can remember was the stretched image when playing the Windows version. I don't remember choppy movement, and I turn sound effects way down and music off (yes, the music is nice, but even the best music is tireing in large doses).

None of the HoMM3 campaigns are really good, unlike the HoMM2 campaigns.
Then is this my problem? HoMM1+2 were great. But I cannot play HoMM3 campaign. It is so boring..I tried so 5 times during 25 years.
Do I need more heroes or one is enough?

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.

I did play through the Homm3 campaign but yeah, it doesn't hold a candle to Homm2.

In general I feel Homm3 is overrated. Perhaps not within the Homm franchise (although I still like Homm2 a bit more) but within the broader strategy/tactical genre it's definitely not the best thing since the sliced bread. I had way more fun with Disciples 2, AoW 2/3, King's Bounty, MoM.

You can probably win with only one, but it's much more convenient with more. Some for exploring, some for bringing fresh troops to the front, one as a squire to your main (flag unprotected sites, hold troops that don't fit your main army and such).

Where HoMM 3 really shines is with the user-made maps, just like AoW1-SM (does AoW3 even have a map editor?).

Of course it does. But it also has one of the best RMGs I've seen.

Regarding HoMM3 campaigns - I didn't really spend a lot of time on them, but main thing to know is that the ones from Arma are a yuge improvement. Vanilla ones are very uneven and particularly the map design in them is utterly dogshit at times.

Armageddon's Blade expansion. I have little to no experience with Shadow of Death campaigns so won't give my opinion on those.

I was still honestly more disgusted with its 2d "art" for spells, skills, hero portraits etc. than the entire 3d part. At least the animated city screens looked p. cool, if not particularly heroes-ey.
