Trent Reznor should apply the same logic to Quake, which although an awesome game isn't really that mechanically different from Doom (much to Romero's chagrin).

Lack of innovation isn't a recent trend - what's recent is patent incompetence, since newer game 'designers' are more often than not clueless idiots who went to expensive schools to learn nothing, and therefore create inept and incompetent pieces of shit, as opposed to the engineers and self-taught savants of 30 years ago.

Plus, although we have plenty of examples of publishers being evil overlords that run creative and brilliant studios to the ground (EA being the biggest example), the notion of limits is important. What we have seen with the more or less recent wave of kickstarted failures isn't a situation where brilliant developers have finally unshackled themselves from the repressive irons of authoritarian publishers, but rather that a lot of the time, developers are incompetent at managing scarce resources, leading to deeply flawed games as a result of troubled projects stemming from mismanaged funds/personnel.

I think it's healthy to understand and exercise moderation. People can't be everything at once, and believing in this idea that the people with the money are inherently evil and exploitative does more harm than good in the long run. Limitations breed creativity.
