Extensive lore has become very popular among fake fandom types, the one that immerse themselves in the game's backstory and buy merch but don't actually play the games or are bad at it, the twitter types. Thus it's an easy way to gather an extra consuming portion for the game. Even the most irrelevant and simple games today "need" to have mountains of lore.
