Still seems like a waste of a city setting. Would be so much more exciting with a focus on stealth, thieving, court politics and spying on occult conspiracies, especially given the 17th century inspiration.

Baroque Elysium? No, thanks.
Not that I'd mind a baroque Elysium (which is kinda funny, because Elysium itself is definitely baroque already), but Elysium isn't focused on stealth, thieving, court politics or occult conspiracies at all.

And an adventure game focused on those things could be p. cool.

Baroque Elysium?
Baroque Deus Ex.

We don't need more "action 'RPGs'". We already got about 20 years worth of too many.
I actually wouldn't call immersive sims "action RPGs". They're real time, yes, but combat being (almost) fully avoidable, there isn't necessarily much action at play.
Besides, you can have TB stealth, like in Invisible Inc (InB4 "not an RPG" argument - that's not the point, and besides neither is Black Legend it seems).

"TB stealth", aka "the long way to avoid actual gameplay". As opposed to rat diplomacy that allows to skip gameplay portions instantly.

Pathfinder: Wrath
I liked the premise and the setting, but out of the recent demos Black Legend seems to be in the earliest stages of development.
And I agree, comparison with GW2 is a spot on, considering how classes/weapons work in this game.

Battle system is a hybrid between nuXcom 2-actions and APs.
Actions don't break movement, so you can move before and after attacks.
Each turn characters have 3 APs to use on attack-skills that cost 1 or 2 AP.
There's no hit/miss chances, no partial cover. But there is line of sight - if anything blocks LOS, even an ally or another enemy, you can't attack.

The main "innovation" is that each attack creates an alchemical disbalance in targets humors, which can be exploited for increased damage.
Basically you have to stack a couple of colored debuffs and then explode them with a finishing strike.
Enemies do that to player characters too, but you can remove stacks by eating magical candies alchemical pellets.

Character development is bare-bones.
There are 5 stats:

Strenght - melee damage
Marksmanship - ranged damage
Skill - catalyze (finishing blow) damage and healing potency
Agility - initiative and movement range
Stamina - health points

The stats are those tiny icons below HP and EXP bars
oY4MH5h.png

On level-up stats increase based on active class.
Maybe this could lead to some interesting min-maxing,
but I have not found a convenient way, other than manual calculation, to tell how each class affects stat-gains.

Classes are based on weapons.
Looting a spear (breaking verisimilitude it was hidden in a foot-locker sized box) unlocked the Landskencht and the Plauge Doctor classes.
But some classes can use more than 1 weapon, like the Mercenary which can use swords, axes, rapiers and daggers.
OaAuKys.png

Weapons provide different active abilities for each class that can use that weapon.
After "learning" these skills, up to 3 of them could be used cross-class.
For example, a Duelist holding a knife can use a "swift kick" attack.
After swiftly kicking some cultists, the character can keep kicking even after changing class to a Mercenary with an axe.
zcz40EQ.png

Gear provides flat percentage bonuses to stats, like axe with +10% to strength and +5 to stamina.
Some items have additional effects, better armor removes 1 humors stack each round.

And some assorted observations.

After creating 1 character, the tutorial NPC keeps referring to him as "you lot".
As it turns out at the start of first battle, there's actually a group of 4. But after combat 3 of them remains on the spot until the next encounter.

Other than providing line of sight, verticality has no meaning whatsoever.
Higher/lower ground does not affect neither hit chance (it's always a hit anyways) nor damage.

Facing is important, flanking and backstabbing deal increased damage.
As you can move before and after attack,
the battle looks like characters taking turns to step in, hit the target from behind and step aside, to let the next one in line do the same.
9294c62862b9521c907423fdb1d59723.jpg

Movement with WASD feels very inconvenient and only serves for gamepad users.
Click-to-move option is just asking to be there.

There is no I in the AI.
An enemy with a debuff dealing damage with every taken step would keep moving until he die, even
if he stood next to one of the characters to begin with.

Game balance seems strange as well, as the hardest difficulty removed XP gains and loot drops, but does not affect the actual encounter difficulty:
HKyCTYt.png

Still I can't say I hated the game, so I'll keep an eye on it.

We are the Warcave
Located in the charming city of Geel in Belgium.

Black Legend is developed by the talented and diverse team of Warcave, located in the charming city of Geel in Belgium.

When it comes to games, we search for only the most passionate individuals. Black Legend was born from such passion, where we aspired to share the historical and folkloric culture of our country with the world through beautiful, immersive gameplay.

To do so, we took this challenge very seriously, diving deep in all manners of resources, from visiting some of the most amazing historical locations right here in Belgium, to exploring museums in the Netherlands as well as jumping straight down the rabbit hole of 17th Century science, trade and arts.

As we continue to work on our project, we wish to leave you with a word of thanks for your continued support and interest in the game.

On behalf of the entire studio, we hope to see you in Grant soon!

Geel, Belgium, February 1, 2021—To build excitement ahead of Black Legend’s upcoming launch, Warcave has revealed details on some of the game’s most important features for fans of turn-based strategy, including descriptions for each of the 15 playable classes, and information about the intricate alchemy battle system.

Check out the Black Legend Demo
Wishlist the game on Steam

For fans of strategy games, one of the most anticipated features of Black Legend is the ability to change their team members to one of 15 different classes that are unlocked as the game progresses. With classes ranging from Alchemist to Sharp Shooter, there are options for all kinds of preferred strategy styles.

To unlock a class, the player must collect all the equipment required for that class through exploration or battle. Unlocked skills can be used by characters, no matter their class, opening up a wide range of cross-class builds for players to experiment with.

“We want players to be creative with the customizations available. When it comes to class abilities and equipment, it’s important to experiment with different combinations to find the best way to defend your party, or defeat the boss,” said Menno van der Heijden, Black Legend Creative Director. “A varied party is essential for survival in the city of Grant.”

For images of each class, click here.

Classes

Alchemist: Trained in the noble art of Alchemy, these heavily armored individuals spend day and night perfecting their skills in battle, supporting allies and debilitating opponents with a mixture of powders, explosions and concoctions.

Buccaneer: The stigma of jolly sailors means very little to this ocean hardened folk. Armed with both melee and ranged options, they wield a variety of tools and curses to be as versatile as possible as part of their crew.

Commander: Beacons of inspiration on the battlefield, these tacticians point out targets, inspire comrades and instill fear in enemies, carrying that momentum alongside their allies through their own offensive abilities.

Doppelsoldner: People trained in the art of the greatsword rely on heavy damage in the fray of battle to set up their allies for devastating results. The wide swings can strike multiple enemies, while the strong blade is designed to primarily injure fellow humans.

Dragoon: Light on their feet and specialized in Pyrokinetics, the Dragoon leaves a blazing trail in their wake. With zero regard for their own safety, many who face Dragoons are reduced to naught but ash.

Duelist: Bearers of slender steel and unshaken honor, these masters of the blade employ any and all tactics to ensure victory in head-on combat. Their strength, speed and skill are only matched by a few, and they would not have it any other way.

Executioner: Justice is inescapable when placed in the capable hands of these merciless men and women. Clad in heavy armor, they deliver death swiftly and efficiently, either by axe or bullet.

Guard: Stalwart protectors of the weak, their shields deflect even the worst of harm, while their arms inflict proper retribution on the offenders. In battle, one cannot find tougher opponents, requiring a solid offense plan to counter their impressive defense.

Inquisitor: Hunters who roam the streets, searching for corruption in any form. Dedicated to protecting mankind from all things unnatural, one wonders how much of their own humanity they left behind in their search for the powers to do so…

Landsknecht: Proud bearers of spears, halberds, hardened by years of marching through all landscapes known to man. Their endurance training makes them the quickest on the field when it comes to bearing heavy armor, and excel at reducing enemy mobility when they’re on the offensive.

Marauder: Heavy weapons and light armor define the overall tactics employed by these ruffians, relying on brute power and speed to overwhelm opponents.

Mercenary: The base, the foundation of all warfare in the world. These men and women fight for no cause, no glory nor creed, but mere coin. How fitting then, to start your journey this way. Their lack of advanced battle techniques is offset by their ability to adapt to any situation by being able to equip all weapons and armor.

Plague Doctor: Masters of Humorism, the body holds no secrets for these patrons of pestilence. What can cure can also kill, and their relentless studies have made them both deadly opponents as well as wondrous companions.

Rogue: The term ‘scoundrel’ is not an insult but a title for the shady rulers of the streets. Agile and cunning, they can identify weaknesses and exploit them with ease, before retreating back to the safety of the shrouds of Grant.

Sharpshooter: Masters of crossbow and rifle, these soldiers rule from the edges of the battlefield, sniping distant targets with deadly accuracy. Keep their enemies at a distance, and in turn, they will keep the enemy at death’s door with ease.

Alchemy

This ancient branch of natural philosophy adds an explosive twist to combat in Black Legend. Based on the real history behind alchemy, this system includes the four stages of the magnum opus, also known as the process to create the philosopher’s stone,—nigredo, albedo, ctrinitas and rubedo. When combined, these four stages create a variety of brutal battle effects:
  • Bronze: A combination of rubedo and ctrinitas, representing Disease
  • Red: Rubedo, representing External Bleeding
  • Crimson: A combination of rubedo and nigredo, representing Internal Bleeding
  • Black: Nigredo, representing black bile caused by Heavy Impact
  • Silver: A combination of Albedo and Nigredo, representing Poison
  • White: Albedo, representing phlegm caused by metal poisoning from Sharp Weapons
  • Gold: A combination of Albedo and Ctrinitas, representing Weakness of the Mind and Soul
  • Yellow: Ctrinitas, representing yellow bile caused by Explosives
Black Legend will launch for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X in Q1 2021. Find out more at the product website here.

Ep 1: History of Grant

33c00261020e2af386c90860f0103e9eec5b6cb4.png

Grant’s status as a city state started very early. No kingdoms or true borders had been established when Grant started to grow. The location was tactically chosen, being both near the water as a source of food and mercantile opportunities, and very central when it comes to land routes.

This favourable position caused the city to grow quickly, despite lacking a direct ruler. By the time the Council had been established, so were neighbouring kingdoms. The rise of these kingdoms was partially possible thanks to their trade through the city of Grant. This very detail had prevented many kings and rulers from taking the city, as a lot of other nations would immediately retaliate should one of their most important independent trade partners end up being captured by a rival kingdom.

Although Grant had some military power, it was mostly for self defense and to keep the peace internally. The city state operated on too small of a scale to compete with foreign nations, however, it did produce a respectable amount of mercenaries available for hire, where it was simply considered another type of good or service you could purchase there.

0782f9ffcc9201b9b3d65ff64c66c38bb94cd804.png

War eventually broke out between two neighbouring nations. Both sides forged alliances with other kingdoms, which removed the threat of instant retaliation that originally kept the city safe. Both sides had set their eyes on Grant, and news of this reached the city council.

After much discussion, the council received a visitor, an incredibly talented Alchemist introducing himself as Mephisto. He laid out a plan where he produced a special beer that creates a very toxic fog, which would envelop the entire city and the outskirts. The population would evacuate inside the city walls and be given an antidote to the fog. When the kingdoms attacked, their troops would succumb to the mist and go berserk, safeguarding the city for as long as the war would rage on.

The Council agreed to provide the necessities for Mephisto to begin his work. Soon everything was set in motion and the city was covered in fog. As the population drank the antidote and waited, scouts would spot the approaching armies from the city walls. The reports detail the soldiers slowing down first, before brutally fighting each other. A horn was heard and what remained of the armies retreated.

Life continued fairly normal in the city. The recipe for antidote was safeguarded heavily to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, although it was very clear that none of the warring nations still had interest in taking Grant after hearing about the power of the fog. All goods were checked before leaving the city, making sure nobody tried to smuggle it out.

Geel, Belgium, March 4, 2021—In anticipation of Black Legend’s upcoming release date announcement, Warcave has revealed details on some of the game’s most intriguing foes. Get a first-look at some of the enemies players will face while traversing the cursed city of Grant, and dig into the history behind some of these brutal beasts.

For fans of rich historic storytelling, one of the most exciting aspects of Black Legend are the creatures inspired by centuries-old stories, respun in a unique way. Based on Belgian and Dutch folklore, these stories and the monsters that emerge from them have ancient roots, predating the Early Middle Ages.

“These stories have survived for centuries because they speak to something within us and resonate with human experience, and we’re excited to put a spotlight on Belgian and Dutch folk stories in Black Legend,” said Menno van der Heijden, Black Legend Creative Director. “The creatures we’ve chosen are a perfect fit for the world we’ve built, and really add to the immersive, story-based experience we want players to have with the game.”

While these monsters are familiar to fans in Europe, Black Legend may be the first encounter players around the world have with characters like ‘Old Red Eyes’, providing the opportunity to explore and experience new legends for the first time.

Whether fans are familiar with these folktales or not, the stories behind these monsters serve the same purposes—sometimes they are meant to teach moral lessons, encourage children to behave or to appeal to the internal fears of people, providing thrilling entertainment.

Meet some of the Beasts in Black Legend:
Old Red Eyes:

Traditionally, this cannibalistic shapeshifter appears as both a large 7 foot / 2.1-meter tall man and as a large black dog with fiery red eyes. This beast is best known for stealing children from their beds and then eating them. During the 20th century, a new monster grew from the legend of Old Red Eyes. Stories of the Nekker, discussed further below, are believed to have roots in the legend of Old Red Eyes.

Nekker:

The Nekker has many names, including Nyx, Williger, Icker and more, and is most commonly described as a large, shape-shifting water demon. This beast preys on children who get too close to water, or on adults who are lured to water by the demon disguised as a drowning child in need of help. Once captured, the Nekker sucks its victim’s blood using a hook and then captures the soul in an upside-down urn.

Witte Wieven:

These White Women or Wise Women appear in stories from various parts of western Europe, dating back to at least the 7th century, pre-Christian era. Appearing in white garments, often in groups of three, who could help or hinder people who encounter them. If aggravated, Witte Wieven are known to roast and eat cats, make people disappear by spiriting them away, and are known to steal babies from their cradles, never to be returned.

Lord Halewijn:
Elements of this ancient, terrifying tale date back to the 7th century AD, and is one of the oldest Dutch folk songs recorded. Several versions of this story exist, but the common theme is Lord Halewijn, an evil being referred to as a demon, faery lord or magician who sings a magical, luring song. Anyone drawn to him by this song is murdered, either by beheading or by being turned to stone.

Blood Carriage:

Possibly derived from Germanic god Wodan’s army of the dead, the Blood Carriage is a terrifying tale of three masked men who prowl the night looking for children to abduct in their blood-dripping carriage. Any children found outside after dark were abducted and brought to the demons or ‘Toecutters’ who stay hidden in the cart. Depending on the version of the tale, the children were killed and their bodies sent away, or the demon would cut off their toes and feast on their blood.

Ep 2: Start of Black Legend

8006712508efa27bd93d8815fdc66ebadb427b77.png

One day, Mephisto was nowhere to be found. He left enough antidote behind for the city to use for several months, and the council decided to keep his disappearance a secret to prevent a panic. Those who worked for him were ordered to list the ingredients he required, and they ensured enough of these ingredients were available for his return.

Mephisto did not return however, and managed to leave the city without anyone’s knowledge. When antidote was starting to run out, the council informed the citizens of the situation. Already, panic started, which eventually led to full chaos when the first citizens fell without antidote. This event would be marked as the Pandaemonium.

Some managed to flee either on foot or by ship, using antidote they managed to scavenge or hold on to. Others simply tried to hide from the violence, barring doors and entries, hoping to outlast the ongoing skirmishes.

Eventually, the chaos died down, as those afflicted succumbed to the fog. Those who fled brought tales of the city’s demise with them, and nobody from the outside dared heading towards the city’s outskirts anymore. The giant wall of fog can be spotted from a distance, and nobody notices how it slowly grows outwards…

355c23bfeaeb5ca367b0efe75e7a8c4bc712ab0d.png

Inside the city, only one member of the City Council managed to keep the effects of the fog at bay. Having witnessed how his colleagues all succumbed to the fog, Benedict Baruch determined the only person capable of cleansing the fog and restoring the city, was Mephisto himself. Benedict gained an intense desire to see the master Alchemist once more, to witness him undo his greatest and most terrible creation. To do so, he gathered a few surviving Alchemists and instructed them to work on a new version of the Antidote.

The Alchemists succeeded in creating a modified version of the antidote, but this one required human blood to function properly. Initially, they used bloodletting on themselves to create the antidote. They went out looking for survivors, and handed them the new antidote as they joined the cult.

Eventually the cult grew beyond the ability to sustain itself. Members were instructed to go out and knock on the doors, demanding that the survivors either join the cult or yield their blood. This event would be remembered as the Tithe of Blood, and fully established the cults takeover of the city.

Since that day, cultists patrol the streets, looking for survivors to either recruit or abduct for blood harvest.

The war outside the city gates has ended. The victorious kingdom is issuing punishments on the losing side. Part of this process is evaluating captured mercenaries that were simply bought by the opposing faction.

The king proposes the same to each group, be executed or make your way to Grant, release it from the fog, and earn a royal pardon in doing so. Many have taken the king’s offer, only to succumb to the fog due to lack of antidote. The city outskirts are littered with the bodies of dead mercenaries.

Mephisto fought on the losing side, as part of the deal he made with a different person. Now standing before the king, he decides to fix the city he initially doomed, seeing as the war is over now.
He gives his fellow mercenary band members a vial of his antidote, as the king’s guards order them to step into the fog towards the city.
