Anyway, I am interested why the author chose Java.

That's elementary - he wasted so much time learning that language he need every single opportunity to use it, even if that's not necessary and can be done with something else with bettter results.
Meanwhile in emulators world - there was Sony PSP emulator based on Java, quite crap, franky. Once they left Java to something else they get massive performance and compatibility boost it's not even funny.

Played first 2 levels from Blood - Dead on Arrival.
Blood+Doom64 monsters? Sounds cool.
But it's not that good, maybe it's get better later but got bored fast. These two levels were bland and boring and made by someone mediocre at level design.
Arsenal was changed. You get standard sawed-off and blunderbus or whatever that junk-firing gun is called that eat 3 shells and overall is not worth in damage/bullet ratio.
Flare gun alt fire is worthless. Tesla fires in weird way. And you get M60 from Powerslave.
Oh and enemy bullets are projectiles now so no hitscan death from cultists this time....

Bloody Pulp Fiction has, imo, the best Blood map ever: Cultists of the Corn. It's an enormous multi-layered barn with an amazing layout and it's very challenging overall. And it looks fantastic to boot. That being said, BPF is not as homogeneously good as Death Wish.

If you take all episodes of BPF in account, yeah. Still, the first episode of BPF is imo better than anything in DW.
The guys behind BPF are also doing a "remaster" apparently. Would be neat if they could polish up the rest of the episodes.

Also, Shadow Warrior GDX when?

I finished Legends of the Iconoclast remake - Scourge of Humanity using BloodGdx. I remember playing the original version a long time ago, and it was a good opportunity to see how it plays with new gameplay changes. The good thing is that we can customize enemy numbers/hp/damage as with regular episodes and it works without any problems. Of course I set enemy quantity to maximum, and oh boy, the first level really puts all your skill to use because the ammo supplies are scarce at the beginning so you need to fight really efficiently to survive the onslaught. Later on the game feels more fair and you can play with all your favourite killing toys. There are some tights spots with Stone Gargoyles and really nasty traps, but with a good reflexes and weapons changing it's doable. Many times it's just an insane dance macabre where we try to live through the a huge groups of monks tossing dynamite and firing all they've got that when we manage to survive, we really feel the satisfaction even with the odds being so against us. That being said, we've got all the monsters from expansions, so beware of blue monks, because they are a really nasty surprises hidden at some levels. Also gargoyles, lots of lovely gargoyles to kill.

The mod changes some things, depending on the difficulty we choose. For example the key can be guarded by easier monster, or we will be blocked from part of the level to make it faster to finish. There are also simple puzzles which change as well, like setting the proper symbols to open the gate or to find out how to destroy the engine of the ship.

SOH is bundled with the walkthrough which includes all the secrets, so if you struggling you can look it up. Myself, I had a great time and the ending part with the 4 elements trial was excellent addition to formula and felt like something from good Indiana Jones game infused into Blood. Instead of separate screens Dwayne Anderson who is the creator, made separate txt files for people who would like to follow the plot without any interruptions. A couple of levels are totally without enemies as well, and we only need find out the exit from the map. There are some new sounds that have been taken from other games, such as Alien Trilogy or Hexen. I don't know why, but it didn't bother me much. Although Tesla Cannon sounds very satisfying with the changed sample.

Overall, with this huge campaign giving us 28 levels to finish, and with fixed scripting and balanced enemy/ammo ratio (except beginning on Extra Crispy) it is one of the best modifications available. I need to play Legends of the Iconoclast second remake - which is titled Unfinished Business.

I have completed the second part of Legends of Iconoclast - titled Unfinished Business.

Episode 1: Trouble On The Homefront

The first episode starts with our hero Logan being teleported to a strange forest. The level is massive, when it comes to enemies, and the best way is just to gather as much resources as possible, while avoiding using too much of our weapons (or use pitchfork, if you have patience). Lots of mushrooms giving you a distorted view, with some underwater section. It's simple, and it feels like a level from previous part. We continue our journey and are now in Tamirtania Wood, an obvious continuation of the previous one, with some key hunting, that can be tricky at first.

"Siege on Tamirtania" brings a change of scenery, and it's damn good. A rather big village, with lots of corners and enemies waiting to hunt us down. What I realized after finishing this level, is that UB feels more intuitive, while not butchering the sizes of the map. Plus, it's not a mod for everyone, only for the most dedicated players who really enjoy the vanilla version. The number of really nasty traps, and big groups of enemies will make you reload very often. Dwayne Anderson also love symmetrical architecture, and as usual we will have an opportunity to cleanse a church of Tamirtania. Very fun moment, reminded me of the train in the first episode of normal Blood.

Next map - Underhalls. This reminds me of the sewer level from Scourge of Humanity. There is a problem regarding the scripting and how the Gdx handle it and it freezes the whole game. Specifically, at the end, when we find out the proper sequence to unlock the key to the exit, after switching the last needed button. It works with MS-DOS version without any problems though, so it's not a problem with a mod itself. After finishing the whole thing, I can tell you that this is the only moment, when you will have to use noclip cheat to progress through.

And last level - Tamirtania Castle. Many tight corners and locked doors. This is where a good memory will be really helpful. The map isn't big, but with so many rooms it can be tricky for a first time. We really need to watch out, and see, if we can retreat if necessary. This introduces also a new feature, that gave me mixed feelings. Spawning new enemies on the previously cleaned sections, after obtaining a specific key isn't the most elegant thing to do and I wouldn't have big problem with that, if there were any sound indicators telling me about that. Luckily, Gdx has the kill counter to make it easier for us. We fight a single beast at the end, and that concludes the first episode.

Without making it too long already, other episodes have some great levels. Like the Death Cavern from second episode, where we need to move carefully through some lava segments, and a very nasty trap with gargoyles. Or the Forsaken Crypts from third, excellent design and enjoyable encounters.

The only real problem, that I found with the second part is mostly the last episode. First level has 3 vertical levels - top, middle, low and we need to navigate through. It takes some time to find the doors corresponding to each key, but the backtracking isn't such painful. After finishing it, we get another big map, Apocalypse Courtyard. I really hated this one, because it really wastes the player's time with all the backtracking and the doors and keys being so far from each other. It's not really hard to finish it, but it takes a little to long with all those long paths, that we need to revisit again, and again.

Having that said, I still think it is worth a shot if you have enough endurance to stomach the difficulty level and you are interested in some more Blood. The good parts really shine, and while sometimes some segments can be confusing at first, most of the time it feels more polished and player friendly when it comes to the design. And last, but not least, it's really fun and has many rewarding moments for the experienced.

Dwayne Anderson is working currently on the remake of the last, third part which will be titled Valiant Destiny.

Finished Death Wish Episode II. Amazing level design, gameplay and atmosphere. I encountered no real issues with the NBlood engine. Intro and outro movies played fine.

Out for Blood

A single episode consisting of 7 levels (6 normal, plus 1 secret). Since for the time being there aren't any new projects available to play, this was a perfect time to see OFB. And to my surprise it's really good. First level, especially the beginning didn't impress me, but the more we venture onward, we see some really good architecture and fun encounters. Combined with some finishing touches like ambushes and last but not least - nicely done secrets it feels almost like a campaign from main game. Although the number of enemies are big, the rooms are mostly done in fair manner. And if you like the destructive walls in Build engine games, than this is a perfect mod. There are some nice little details, that I didn't see in Blood before, like a teleporter showing, where it will take you, just like in Serious Sam.

I've finished it on BloodGDX, because on Fresh Supply it crashes on one of the levels.

The Way of Ira

The 8 levels (7 normal, plus 1 secret) of Blood combined in one episode. We start with a short intro, which explains what happened after killing Tchernobog. After knowing that the monks stole our beloved kitty, we can go on blood rampage.

The levels are great, they feel like from vanilla version, but with more enemies and supplies that are available to find. That is why I recommend to play it with highest enemy numbers, because it makes things more interesting and we will still have a lot of spare ammo lying around. Secrets are really easy to find, especially at the beginning.

We start of with "Purge Night" level, with some nearby forest and houses, nothing really hard for veteran players. There is a passage to a secret level "Lakeside Genocide", but it's so easy to find that I will not spoil it. It's way easier to die, since there are monks scattered everywhere in big groups and we have the extra ones from expansions included as well. Very fun level, lots of key hunting and secrets. After that we got "Knee Deep in Sludge", with swamps and small castle with some tight spots. After that, we visit "Cabal Town", which reminds me of "Tricks and Traps" from Doom 2, with most of the corridors being unlocked by a key, testing our shooting skills and endurance. Great architecture and pacing. We finally find our way out, just in time for a visit in "Asylum for Critics", which start in vast open area which tests our jumping skills, with some reconnaissance around the place, and finally the interior. We find the boat that takes us to "Dark Abbey", which is more claustrophobic, but similarly to "Cabal Town" divided into single (kill) rooms. We go wild after that, and visit "The Underworld", with lots of lava, skeleton of some ancient beast and it tests all your survival skills with lots of monsters waiting patiently around. There is a memorable key hunting moment, where we need to reach the top and raise some columns down below to grab it. "Retribution" is the last level, and after a short journey we are in a small room that will be the center point of the upcoming battle. There are some closed doors which we will be unlocking and disposing waves of foes. We fight Stone Gargoyle, Cerberus and new (old) Tchernobog.

Overall it's a fun episode, polished and interesting to play, with more supplies available the player can go wild and have some really good Blood session.

There was a Russian teenage band called Climbatica, one of the albums of which uses covers of Blood's MIDI soundtrack as instrumentals.
The covers are pretty , check them out (this one is based on Unholy Voices):

lyrics
"Count Cabal"
It's night, light's out.
Say "Hi" to the rails.
Near the grey tracks
Dead bodies rest.
Yet I only need
The head.
With a rusty spear
I cut it off.

And in my palace
I'll sit at the table,
My tasty dinner
Fresh from the pot.
Appetizing steam,
Fire in the hands,
Right now and right here,
I want to eat.

I'm the black count:
I've got a ragged cloak,
Hat with no top
And boots.
Bloody cross-ties,
Dirty rails.
I bring death.

My hound's nearby,
Hellish, just like me.
It breathes fire;
Angry and dumb.
The moon licks me
With its light.
I was waiting for that night
I'm count Cabal.

You can find the rest of the album here, pretty fun to figure out which Blood songs are used if you're familiar with the soundtrack

....

still want to play Death Wish 1.6 but there are too many updates poping out, still waiting for final one
