Is anyone else playing this? I'm giving it a go and I must say it's really fucking boring. I can't understand why so many want to marry this game. Also the heap of shit keeps crashing on me. Fucking console port.

Do you have to play co-op to get any enjoyment out of it? So far it's been like an outdoors Hellgate: London with easymode Halo-shield and MMORPG-quests. And the AI is dumb as shit. So it's too easy and it feels like a singleplayer MMOG. Not a hit in my book.

Their wasteland-portrayal is pretty nice though but that's pretty much the only good thing I can say.

Still downloading it, torrent is moving slow. I did hear that it apparently has no authorization server or some shit, so pirates can play in official games and there's no cheating protection, so that's lol right there.

Apparently you have to manually open ports to play it, too. I heard it has a little text file saying "OK OPEN THESE PORTS DAWG" in the retail game, which 90% of the people buying it won't know what the fuck to do. What offends my delicate sensibilities is how many good reviews it's getting and how much positive buzz it's getting from console gamers.

Yes.
And then, it is great fun. But alone, it's just as you described it.

Even most reviewers say it is boring as hell if you play alone.

Desperation + hype = buy
dumb + dumb = console gamer
console gamer = buy

The game is really boring. They could have made it so much better. Why is it so simplistic? There isn't nearly enough customization on the loot and dress-up doll portion. There are guns, shields, and grenades. That's it.

The FPS portion is dull. The AI is dumb. The weapons feel weak. The only thing the game has going for it over Hellgate-London is the semi open world, but it's mostly empty and barren.

I'm playing it on a ATI 3300 at 800x600 with dynamic shadows turned off and it runs pretty smooth. I was going to use this game as an excuse to upgrade my video card. Not anymore, the game is not worth it. I'm glad Torchlight will run amazing on my card.

If you have friends to play it with then it's a pretty fun experience. If you don't, I probably wouldn't bother with just single player and/or subjecting yourself to playing with strangers. Of course if you're one of those 'loathe everything that came out after 1998 types' then... well... it's like talking to a wall anyway.

Diablo feeling not coming back?

Damn.

Well the loot is pretty good, but no way will this have anywhere near the longevity that D2 has. Probably will play twice (to see the higher difficulty that's unlocked once you complete the game), but play over and over, trying all the characters and various builds? Nah.

It does seem to be accepted fact in the game industry, that if you include a certain amount of sandbox-y content you can guarantee a decent score no matter how bland and average the content.

Was kind of looking forward to this, as my friends and I are always on the look out of co-op games.

(to see the higher difficulty that's unlocked once you complete the game)

Yeah sure the loot stuff is reminiscent of Diablo. But your inventory is the size of a fucking shoebox and you have to throw shit out and manage it all the time, which is something you don't wanna spend a lot of time on in an FPS action game.

It's decent, but it does seem to hinge on the co-op quite a bit, which is okay since it's designed as a damn co-op game. Friends and I are having fun with it, the combat's a whole hell of a lot more Diablo-like than Hellgate: London ever was, and I really like the art style that Gearbox went with.

That said: the skill tree system feels kind of tacked on, or at least underdeveloped, the menu system is kind of clunky (pretty bad case of console-itis, but the only place it has cropped up for me yet), and while the game is pretty on most detail settings, it can get a little juddery even if you do meet sys-reqs.

All in all, I'm pleased with it so far, and I'm usually pretty finicky about my shooters.

Damnit. This shit did not make D2 a good game. I didn't need to play through the game twice on tutorial mode there, why does any developer think its a good idea to make me?

I bought it last night on Steam. It's ok.. (single player wise). The AI is kind of dumb and the weapons aren't that interesting. It's kind of like Team Fortress... in a wasteland setting.

It feels more like a fallout type of world than fallout 3 tried to do.

It's like they are blatantly ripping off of Bioshock (the vending machines) and Fallout 3, in artwork and area design. And it has giant quest compass, so you can not possibly fail any quest.

The quest are all basically kill 4 monsters, kill 8 bandits, find this gun, kill this boss etc...

The writing is awful, but better than fallout 3. The voice acting is....ok? It's not bloodlines.

That said, I'm strangely still interested in it. Maybe it's just that I have nothing to play right now.

Problem with most sanbox games is that, because they are so large and usually lack any scripting, they deliver a very diluted experiance. The story is usually pretty bad, the weapons all feel similiar, and the locations are all copy-pasted. Nothing really stands out in these games. I'd rather have a game with some linearity mixed with freedom (FarCry, Infinity Engine games, Deus Ex, Stalker, Bloodlines) then a game with total freedom.

Problem with most (sanbox) games is that they made by lazy lamers who just want money.

How did Sandbox come into the conversation? From What I've seen this piece of shit game is really linear... Someone please explain to me how this is in any way a sandbox game.

Other than that.. this has to be the most boring sack of shit I've ever torrented in my life. Good thing I'm not a console-tard and bought this.. or even worse.. followed it/pre ordered.

Yes. I haven't even played it and I know that. Hell, the Gametrailers review basically says as much. Also said it was designed as a co-op experience. So, get some damn friends already. ;)

What I think today from like half an hour of playing the game myself is...

Loot. You get it. A lot, and it's fun, but not as fun as in D2, since you only get money, ammo, guns and grenades (and other minor stuff).

I'm now at level 5 and still didn't upgrade any skills. Wtf? Am I missing something?
Probably levelling up is introduced later, but if it is, that already is too late IMHO.
Rigth now, I have no idea where the RPG in this game is supposed to come from.

Nice graphics! Really, I like the style, a pretty good combination of textures and shaders. Though I fear that it will become boring if there is no variation at all.

I don't think soloing through the game has any worth. The "story" is presented in such a dry way they could as well have left it out. Worse than WoW.

Very nice humor!

As I said before, this game is most likely very motivating in Co-Op play.

Okay, that's it. Mind you, after 30 minutes of playing this can only be a first impression.

One thing I noticed from watching video reviews is that the damage doesn't seem to be random (dice based). So this guy's shooting a mutant dog and the damage pops up, Final Fantasy style, but that's not really needed since EVERY HIT does ten damage.

It's like,

Pow-pow-pow--

10-10-10.

Were they using guns with locked-in damage, or is that just how the whole game works?

No, the damage is always the same (well depending on weapon and stats, obviously), BUT only if you hit the same spot.
This is very much based on player skill and shooting some guy in the head will always result in a critical hit.
I don't know how many different zones there are on each enemy that you can hit to see different amounts of damage.

So, no real randomness here.

You've probably passed this by now, but the skill tree doesn't unlock until level five, when your character gets his class bonus thing.

The more I play this, the more I'm convinced that it could be a great amount of fun if you're actually playing it with your friends. The co-op is a bit like playing Diablo online with voice chat, and the game has that same sort of breezy, over-the-top feel. It's a product that was very clearly designed to be simple and fun. The kind of thing where you get together with some friends and shoot at monsters while joking around with one another. It's never going to be a groundbreaking title, but then, I'm not sure it was ever supposed to be.

The real downside is getting three other friends with an interest in this sort of game and the time to play it in. Not the most likely thing to happen, and a pretty unfortunate turn of events.
