After two-and-a-half years in the making, more if you count the original German version’s development time, the Breath of Fire 2 Retranslation Patch (v1.0) is finally done.

The English patch includes numerous bugfixes and improvements, restoring features and interface elements missing from the German version: you can buy stacks of items again, and the handy AP cost window in the battle menu has been restored. Also, the “disappearing cursor” has been rectified; special thanks to the beta testers for getting on my case about that.

The patch download includes translator’s notes (warning: heavy spoilers!) and some bonus goodies: a pair of alternate intro patches, one for those who’d like to see how the intro looks with a different song, and another for those who’d like the original title screen music back.

So about a year after Breath of Fire's release, in September of 1994, Capcom released Breath of Fire II. This time, however, they had no association with Squaresoft, and released the game under their own flag. Unfortunately, this meant that Capcom would have to translate the game themselves. This turned out to be a huge mistake, as the translation of Breath of Fire II is its weakest point, making the story unintelligible at some points.

It's honestly not the most complicated story in the world, and you might as well get the GBA remake if you really want to play the game.

Still, thanks for the news.

I remember BoF2's plot being pretty simple and easy to follow. I mean, it's not like it was fucking Xenogears or anything.

The strangest thing about Japanese game publishers is how the most godawful, fucktardtastic games get sequels. Next to Breath of Fire, even Final Fantasy seems like a good game.

And then there's people working for free in order to improve this hopeless turd of a game.

You should honestly try BoF4. It's gorgeous for a PSX game, good functionality, light on the JRPG tropes, and has a decent story to boot.

I never did play any of the later games of the series. I also don't remember the translation being unreadable at any point, but... that might have just been in comparison to every other translation of the day. Final Fantasy IV was worse, but more comically bad so it made up for it.

In before bitching about 'furry' characters.

BoF3 was good. Thanks for the info... uh... larpin' dude. I'll have to try this out. In the absence of even slightly redeemable cRPGs it seems the Codex has finally opened its doors to the land of the rising sun. :P

I did back in the day and, me being the work horse that I am, I even completed it. Now that I think about it I think I'll change my mind and rate it the best in the series followed by BoF2, but, eh, not really *good* good...

Are these not shitty jRPGs, though? Have I crossed into an alternate dimension where black is white and the Codex loves Oblivion?

Breath of Fire 2 might have been my very first JRPG. Or maybe it was Mystic Quest. Nice game, nice music, good times.

I never understood how some people liked BoF 1 better, translation aside 2 is so much nicer than... a lot of things. And most attacks are animated, that was so much nicer than in Final Fantasy were a lot of enemies don't move when they attack.

First and best JRPG I ever played.

Except for the last part where you travel downwards into the earth. Goddammit, I hate that part.

Also, I agree with Annie that the fourth is the best of the pack. Has the best combat, music, story, and so on.

I might as well give Breath of Fire II another go sometime then, it won't be the same without the hilariously awful dialogue though. I may even like the game less.

BOF2 seems to be better than the first game in many aspects, but I dropped it halfway through. For some strange reason I remember that i liked bof1 better.

Count me as perhaps the only person in the world who liked Dragon Quarter (Though releasing it as a Breath of Fire might've been a mistake)

I remember BoF 4 was good (as in, better than average writing, not so cliche'd antagonist etc). Too bad Capcom doesn't want to make jrpgs any more and they left it to Square.

Actually according to the hidden mystical rules of what makes an dungeon crawler good dragon quarter should appeal to many here. It really treads on a path few games try, you actually have a visible time limit and if you actually want to finish the game resources skills traps everything has to be used at its fullest.
To explain the main character is once again a dragon but whenever you use any of the dragons strength a visible counter rises when that counter reaches 100% its game over and there is no way to reset or lower that counter.
Thought characters are not very pleasing to look at and story has interesting parts it is not the main focus so bare that in mind if think of giving a try.
