Half Life. Not a big FPS fan, but Half Life 1 defied my usual distates for the genre. Absolutely fantastic game, still mostly holds up.

Wish I could say the same for Half Life 2, but about two things I enjoy in HL2 now are the music and surprisingly endearing character arc with Alyx.

Doom.
Where it all began. Of course there was Wolfenstein 3D, another classic and the true father of Doom, but it is a corridor/maze shooter.
Doom laid the groundwork for the FPS genre. Its greatness cannot be really quantified.
By the way, all the titles OP listed are awesome and you should all play them.

Butter Good to see another Heretic enjoyer! As a matter of fact, I am playing it right now and having a blast!

Excuse me? John Romero's magnum opus "Daikatana"? Hello?

But yes, "F.E.A.R." has to be the correct answer as it is the shooty-est of the first person shooters.

I love Doom 1 & 2, but Duke 3d was absolutely amazing to me when it came out. That level of environmental interactivity and the set piece levels was just incredible at the time.

All the build engine games were great really.

Also loved Heretic, Hexen and Strife on the doom engine side.

Quake 1 for the cultural/technological significance. And because I loved Team Fortress mod. But the most fun I had in FPSs was probably Duke 3D.
