Tried it, but I dunno... CivIV still feels like a game for kids or multikult feminists, and Civ3 feels more complex, has a better art style, and I can't think of any dumbing down in that game, only aspects which were maybe too complex or put too much emphasis on micro. Then again, I love extreme micromanagement.

Combat made civ 4 unplayable for me, I like it this way.
The demo was to short tho, I could only capture the Bismark capital...

Here is why the new water walking promotion sucks:

waterdisaster.jpg

See how the choke point was made meaningless?

When I had the water walking explained to me I envisioned that your units would have to stop for a turn to make boats, or that you had to pay for some or something, but the fact of the matter is different: Not only can they walk on water as if it was grassland, but metamorphing into a boat and back again takes zero turns, zero movement points. Water is just treated like another grasslands tile.

And don't tell me to "just build a navy to defend", since they can cross the water in just one turn...

Well that sucks, there should be one turn prepare time for both embarking and disembarking.

Two things annoying me. First, the AI keeps begging me to adopt an open borders pact (which I agree to), then revokes it. Rinse, repeat, at least 10 times so far, WTF? Second, I keep getting a message telling me my trade route has been broken with my sister city, WHY? My trade route consists of a simple, connected road...So what am I missing or doing that's causing this?

Some of the things I've been reading about in this thread and at Civfanatics sound downright silly. It seems like they removed so many concepts from previous games and haven't replaced them with anything substantial... I have to wonder if this will be yet another franchise hopelessly lost to McDonaldization, or if there's still a chance to turn this around with expansions and mods.

One thing I found interesting while reading Civfanatics, which I haven't read in a long time, is that apparently the Civ playerbase now has an unusually high amount of RTS fans in its ranks.

A quick note; as far as I've read, units are defenceless on water. If that's true, it mitigates the problem, since having a fleet will enable you to rape waterwalking troops.

Yeah... try stopping them when it's THEIR turn, though.

Maybe a barbarian is walking over the road?

Hmm, I guess that's possible as the road is pretty long and there are a few areas covered by the fog. I'll have to make an extra effort to keep some troops around to keep all the road uncovered so I can test that.

Why do you still bother with this dumbed down shit? I deleted the demo yesterday and won't even bother with the full 'demo'. Truly the worst out of all Civs - basically a primitive turn-based "RTS". Although the massive dumbing down was predictable when they said it will be just like Civ Rev.
Installed Civ3 and saw a massive incline :smug:

Yep. Fall From Heaven 2 however inclines it a bit and is the only reason to play it.

and Civ3 feels more complex, has a better art style, and I can't think of any dumbing down in that game, only aspects which were maybe too complex or put too much emphasis on micro.
And that's great. Complexity is great as it gives more depth to what you can do. When all you do is spamming +1 to resource buildings (because there is nothing else you can do with a city - it's like a primitive RTS indeed) like in shitty Civ5 now it seriously ruins all the fun.

Then again, I love extreme micromanagement.
But there is none of it in Civ3. Extreme micromanagement is Victoria and Imperialism. Civ3 is just very close to how it should be in 4X.

I am afraid I might end up agreeing. Might make one full game playthrough, but I doubt I will make it through.

Seems I wasn't quite correct about water walking, metamorphosing into a boat actually uses up your remaining movement points

That said you can still walk around a chokepoint in two turns.

Exactly, it does consume all your remaining points. Plus they are sitting ducks. Place an archer or catapult there and sink them in no time.

It seems accurate to me. For example, the chokepoint at Thermopylae had to be controlled by both sea and land to be of any use. The only difference is that you don't have to build those transports yourself, which is kind of accurate - in a lot of periods, that sort of passage was done by conscripted merchant boats. I'd rather there was a cost associated with embarking, but the mechanic is otherwise fine.

Wasn't it quite common throughout early history for armed forces to construct their own boats as required?

Presumable these low tech transports can't cross ocean, just littoral areas.

Correct, at least for early-mid game. There's a later-game tech that allows ground units to cross oceans - I think it might be Steam Power or something like that.

When I invaded the neighboring continent and started taking cities, my mass of bored, automated workers began automatically shipping over the ocean to the newly-available building areas. It was actually pretty cool to see.

So it's even more dumbed down? Geez they really took this dumbing down into overdrive
