Codex 2013
I have long talked about the Codex getting together and raising dough to make OUR crpg. No one took the idea seriously. However, with Kickstarter and it's numerous successful projects (at least, in the funding stage) we can really do this. Our target amount will have to be higher though, since we will need to hire developers, but I am 100% sure we can make it work. Furthermore, while we won't be able to raise 100+ million that is required to make an AAA game, we don't need to. Legend of Grimrock has proven it is possible to make a beautiful game (grafix wise) with a small team and minimal funding.

So, what do you think? I am think about a 3rd person, isometric turnbased puppy with a shitload of stats/skills/talents/spells during chargen and level up. Less emphasis on story, more of a sandbox world with lots and lots to do. Exploration will be key.

We could either use a ruleset by an existing pnp RPG company (heck, even DSA, the rpg powering realms of arkania and drakensang) or hire someone to make a unique ruleset for us (this is not that expensive, I have researched it) tailored to our specifications.

Heck, we could even hire the Grimrock team, and maybe Cleve Blakemore as well, as lead programmer ( I am serious, I have played the leaked version of Grimoire like many here. It is a good game, especially considering it is made by one man neanderthalian ubermensch)

Or, we could hire the team behind Lands of Lore and Eye of the Beholder 1+ 2, or the guys from Attic who made the Realms of Arkania trilogy.

If we make a profit sharing deal with them, they could even be hired really cheap and be extremely motviated to make it a great game, so they earn more money.

Also, if the game we make sells well, like Grimrock is selling, we could use the profits to fund sequels (and donate some money to this site so that it doesn't die)

Thoughts?

Codex 2013
As I think about this more, I am getting more and more excited. I would do this myself (i.e. set shit up on Kickstarter, but unfortunately Kickstarter is currently only for Kwans)

Here are a couple more ideas about what I mean:

-This will be a true old school tactical turnbased/partybased crpg. There will be tons of skills and feats/talents to choose from for your PCs. The character sheet will be so complicated that you will need to have had an A or a B in Calculus in college to be able to understand how the game system works. If you got less than a B in college level Calc, this game is not for you. Play Diablo 3 instead.

-The game will only be playable in DOS. This means that you will need to boot the computer up in DOS to start the game. This is not just for the old school feel, but also to prevent gay ass popamole BULLSHIT of today where 'tards play a game in Windows, and then alt-tab and post on forums/chat/do other gay bullshit and then alt-tab and play the game a bit more. By booting in DOS alt-tab is not possible. You only play the game. You wanna do something else? Exit the game and boot up Windows and do whatever shit you wanna do.

-A true adventuring experience. You will feel like you are controlling a party of adventurers in a living, breathing world. That means, if you head out of town you need to go on a shopping spree first if you wanna survive, and buy stuff like blankets, food, water, bandages, herbs, etc. Diseases will kill you faster than enemy attacks.

-No magic weapons, or any other such popamole bullshit. However, there will be TONS of weapons, each with slightly different stats. Unique artwork for each weapon ofcourse.

-Scores of spells, each unique and different, each with it's own graphic animation. Furthermore, spells increase in power as you go up levels, so a level 1 spell will be just as useful at level 10 as it was at level 1. Direct attack popamole spells like fireball, lightning etc will only make up 30% of magic in total. Rest of the spells include summonings, teleporation, scrying, and utility spells that affect the gameworld and are primarily useful in exploration and adventuring. Absolutely NO healing spells AT ALL. Also, NO fucking healing potions. AT ALL. You heal when you rest, agonizingly slowly. You can speed it up a bit by using herbs, poultices/bandages, medical treatment by a party member with a high physician skill, etc etc. Oh and no ressuructions. If a PC dies, he/she is dead forever. You want him back, you need to reload the game from before he died. However, there will be high level spells that affect dead PCs, allowing him to be brought back as an undead such as a Vampire, giving him brand new special abilities and shit.

-No romances, relationships, or any other homosexual bullcrap.

-No elves, no dwarves, no fucking insectoids/lizardmen/catppl. Only Humans currently allowed as PCs and populating the gameworld. (though perhaps an equivalent to Half-Orcs could be in the game, as I like the rape allusions.)

-Possible to play true evil in the game. You can rape women/priestesses/children and burn their bodies after torturing them etc etc.

Thoughts thus far?

I'm all for a hentai rpg as long as there are romance (straight, gay and bestiality) options, turn based combat and multi headed dicks as bosses.
No need to hire developers though, the codex is full of talent. I can draw penises and program in binary code, we just need someone to make some moosic and get some good moaning sfx

Wasteland 2 is already a codex-approved CRPG. I'm sure MCA/Obsidian's will be, too.

There's really no chance that a small forum is going to raise enough money to fund a team-developed, complex CRPG. The site might have got $10,000 for Wasteland 2, but that's probably not even a drop in the bucket toward hiring a team of developers to make a complex game. Even Grimrock is very small in scope, for obvious reasons.

My god, the amount of edginess in this forum is astounding!

YEAH!!! I know what you mean bro, my dark and twisted soul begs for virgin blood, Slipknot, Cradle of Filth and forests in the winter. This game could provide all 4 of them in a single place.

Anyway, I don't understand why are we supposed to tie everything to RPG Codex. Why can't we convince Blakemore to create a Kickstarter page so he could finally finish his game? Or another page for other people to join on Fargo's pathway.

If you really want to see something truly codexian... why not make a mod? NWN's Aurora Toolset is really a great thing, all you need to do there is to think of the story, characters, dialogues, encounters... engine and the whole game itself you already get for free (well, for $9.99 on GOG).

This is exactly how I would design a RPG if I was 14 years old.

I like your DOS only idea, but maybe you should go a little bit further, how about this :
-game only playable in Linux, you will need to compile it yourself. Some lines of code will be deliberately be wrong, and you will have to fix them ; this way, we're quite sure idiotic fucktards will never play it.
-The game will have no graphics, text only. Still, it needs to require an i7 because we know poor people buy 1$ iphone games and we do not want that.
-Boxed copies, only, in FLOPPIES, sold for 150$ each.

I'm sure we can push that a little bit further.

PC speaker support only

In windy areas you lose control of your character

Different keys required to move on different types of terrain

When your character dies, so does your hard drive

-shareware
-no more than 16 colors, but dithering allowed as a compromise
-no mouse
-installed through 5.25 inch floppy disks, again as a compromise
-patches and updates by snail mail only, recipent pays postage
-codex hint hotline manned by skyway himself, children please seek permission from a responsible adult
-dongle drm + special boot disk required
-special edition has a demoscene intro with greetz to codex members
-special edition also has a special concept artbook by prosper (additional fee if you want to exclude the artbook)

When your character dies, so does your hard drive

there was an 'artistic' space invaders clone indie game awhile back that used random files on your harddrive as enemies

whatever you hit got deleted permanently in realtime

truly a game not for casuals and people afraid of bold artistic statements

Andhaira, take your pills. This sounds like the kind of game I'd think was edgy when I was 13. "YEAH BRA! I CAN FUCKIN' RAPE AND TORTURE PEOPLE! THIS IS FUCKIN' AWESOME!" Which is only slightly better than the other typical 13 year old games like, "OH MAN! LETS MAKE A GAME ABOUT MY PALS ON THE CODEX! DU CAN BE THE MAIN CHARACTER AND CLEVE AND VOLOURN CAN BE THE VILLAINS, R00FLES!" or "Yeah man! I'm making a Final Fantasy fan-game! No, seriously, this one's gonna be awesome!"
