It does seem as if the developer really put his time into creating a historically accurate WWI experience.
If the game feels miserable to play, then he was too successful. Are there supernatural elements, or the standard "hallucinations that can kill you"?

I just beat the entire game.

The total amount of backtracking accounted for about 75% of my total gameplay hours.

But to answer your question, there are zero supernatural elements.

Chapter 6, or the endgame in this case, does feature a hell-like dungeon within Fort Vaux, AKA the German HQ.

Before the final trench battle outside the perimeter of Fort Vaux, there are bizarre animal and dinosaur-like sounds coming from a gated exit that makes you believe you are fighting a giant lizard as the end boss.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

There are only more Germans to shoot and blow up.

There are dream sequences, and part of the ending of the game that I earned reminded me of Silent Hill, but that's really it.

That and a dumbass Donkey Kong look-a-like wearing a German spike helmet that rushes you, but you can't fight, because that turns out to be a dream too.

I would have rated it an 8/10, but knocked off a point because of the terrible AI.

Regardless of the game's theme itself, there's no real way to convey the "horror" of WWI, or any horror for that matter, with 2D pixels.

Like most people that post on these forums, I don't need great graphics to enjoy a game, but in order for a game to be anything remotely approaching scary, it needs to be in first-person perspective (over the shoulder works too, but is slightly inferior IMO).
