Playing the AWE expansion now. Just more Control, as you'd expect. So far, a couple hours in, it doesn't even have the unique looking environment that the first expansion did, but hopefully that changes. Alan Wake is pretty front and center, it's not subtle. Tons of shit to read right off the bat, way more than the main game which is weird.

Edit: With The Outer World's expansion coming tomorrow I'm not gonna finish this. It's very simplistic "more Control" without much going on. Boring offices, same old Hiss fights. There is a new dark/light mechanic but it's very simplistic. I liked Control for its atmosphere but always found its combat annoying, so new new atmosphere really means meh. Maybe someday in the future in a 120fps 4k ray tracing playthrough or some shit.

Finished the DLC, I'd say it'd be not worth purchasing if it was not free (as far as I understand, not sure about that). It feels more like tech demo of the engine rather than a DLC or a stand-alone game, there's basically nothing but kinda boring combat, a total of one boss, zero Threshold kids / Darling presentations, no interesting "exorcism" mini-games like the camera one in the first DLC. I haven't played Alan Wake (despite owning it for 7 or 8 years), so everything that happened story-wise was a mystery for me, despite reading all available notes and listening to the audiologs. They say it's covid-related but I doubt you could not figure out something to record the voice actors (who probably sat at home with had nothing to do anyways) and actually do something worth playing.

Straight :decline:

Not sure what you mean, but the DLCs were not free. They were $15 each or $25 in a bundle, iirc. They did come with the complete edition on Steam day one though, a year later.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Of course, it may vary from region to region, but with our prices it seems to be quite cheap ($20 or so)

Nah fam everyone knows Quantum Break was the tech demo for the engine and this was the actual

game.

I finished this off a few weeks ago. Quite entertaining as far as shooters go. Looks great with ray tracing and at 1440p. Nice atmosphere overall IMO. It has its problems, but I reckon more hit than miss.

Control has sold more than 2m units
Sci-fi thriller is Remedy's fastest-growing new IP since Max Payne

Remedy Entertainment's acclaimed action game Control has shifted more than two million units since launching last year.

The figure was revealed during the company's first ever Capital Markets Day presentation, which provides an update on Remedy for investors and analysts.

It makes Control the developer's fastest growing new IP since Max Payne.

This has in part been enabled by the fact that Control is the studio's first "truly multi-platform" game in years, due to Microsoft exclusivity limiting Alan Wake and Quantum Break to Xbox and PC.

The Finnish studio said the sci-fi title continues to sell strongly, noting that November 2020 was a record month for the game thanks to promotions.

Remedy noted that there has been a significant shift to digital in 2020. Where physical copies accounted for 40% of all game sales in 2019, it has shrunk to 10% this year.

The company also teased Vanguard, its upcoming live-service multiplayer game that will draw on "selected Remedy world-building and narrative strengths."

While the studio said it's keeping quiet on the game for now, it did confirm the title would be free-to-play and entirely funded by Remedy, although it has not decided what the publishing model will be.

We recently talked to Control's director Mikael Kasurinen about the game's development on our Five Games Of podcast.

Wow, 10% of copies sold were physical discs? I didn't know consoles went digital so fast. Wonder why they even bothered with disc drives in the PS5 and XboxWhatever.

Since consoles are DRM'd to the core, physical disks are the next best thing - assuming you can use the console without any need for activation or whatever. So, yeah, it doesn't make that much sense for Xbox as (AFAIK) it requires activation to even use the console. But PS5 doesn't require that so DVDs at least work.

Another reason is probably that you can start the game faster without having to download several BluRay disks' worth of data.

Finished Control like a month ago. It was surprisingly enjoyable, but I have to say that the DLC was really lame. I was expecting something more as I was a big fan of the Alan Wake DLC, American Nightmare. Both DLCs reeked of low effort cash grabs with recycled content up the wazoo. Not worth getting unless it's free or part of the complete edition, but I certainly would not buy them as a season pass deal or anything. The main game itself was fine, with some of the smoothest 3rd person shooter gameplay by Remedy yet. Martti Suosalo as Ahti was funny as shit as well.

Im like 30 minutes in, and i already have urge to skip the dialogues/cutscenes because there's just too much inane bullshit. Will this get more down to earth or is this one of the "artistic" kind of crap like Death Stranding? I hate surrealism/mindfuck/supernatural games, and if this is the kind of game, the lynchian/postmodernist shit, i will refund it.

Gameplay so far consist of shooting a pistol with unlimited ammo... IM SO INTERESTED...I thought the game will be at least good in terms of gameplay[Remedy made Max Payne, an excellent game series], as some people said, but i guess most of people bought it for convoluted story.

Alan Wake DLC definitely seemed like that to me and I quit halfway through, but the other one has a completely different environment, new powers and a new enemy type. Can't say I agree on that one, thought it was a good bit of "more Control" if that's what you're after. Definitely nothing amazing, but expansions rarely are.

Yes, the story/mood is very David Lynch meets X-Files.

Control excels in its worldbuilding and features strong exploration thanks in large part to its moveset and verticality. The tactility of the environment and the props instantly reminded me of Max Payne 2. The environments reminded me of FEAR in its stylistic sterility. That's not to say there aren't more fantastic environments in the game, the quarry and the mirror were wonderful moments. The core combat loop I found pretty boring not long into the game. I feel like not only are you too overpowered but that the advantage is given to you far too early. I wish that the TK ability had been more neutered to start with and gradually strengthened with time. Thankfully you do die pretty quickly against AOE attacks so you've always got to be on your toes and listen to the cues for explosives. So far, this is my favorite Remedy game since Max 2 and Control does a great job of planting seeds in the player's mind of where the franchise could go next.

Currently doing the Alan Wake DLC after finishing the Ordinary dump objective.

I bought this on latest sale, and strongly considering a refund. Almost reached a 2h mark, going to find the janitor now.

The game is trying extremely hard to be ''special', but instead it comes off as just trying too hard: 'hey, look, we are SO WEIRD!!!!'. I feel that after less than 2h I already see what the game has to offer: watch a cutscene / talk with somebody, fight a bunch of trash mobs, go from point A to B, repeat. I can already feel the gameplay loop as repetitive, and it's much too soon to have this feeling. And last but not least - whenever this horse-shaped protagonist speaks, I feel like I want to punch her in the face. And this thing got nominated for best acting in 2019 Game Awards, seriously?

If I don't like it after 2h, does it get any better later? Epic fights, memorable moments, great atmosphere, anything? Or should I just refund it and forget altogether?

The frequency of story stuff gets much more spread out later, but the core style and tone of the game is the same throughout. The combat gets more varied when you get more powers, though, so maybe that would hook you eventually.

Got the game free when I purchased my RTX 2070 super. Even with DLSS 2.0, enabling HIGH RTX still takes a big chunk of my FPS when running 4k resolution.

Awesome-looking but difficult game. Got the DLCs and reached the final boss fight in the AWE expansion.

Sorta Souls-like but without the RPG elements.

Just completed the game and overall it's a pretty good game. The gameplay was at its best by the end though when you can fly, throw shit everywhere, mind control enemies and basically use most of your powers to it's full potential. It honestly felt like a better Jedi game than most recent Star Wars games lol.

As of right now this is the only game I'm somewhat interested in returning to. I played a tiny bit of it back in 2019 and I just stopped. Can't really remember why. It had a cool X-Files vibe and I dug the mystery. I might pop this one back in at some point.
