A roving band of masterminds sounds pretty scary. All of them disguised as player characters and giving each other sneak attacks.

A half dozen or so in a UA book wouldn't be bad, but it's a slippery slope. Those classes are almost never balanced and that rune class looks awful.

From a balance stand point yeah, the Rune Keeper class is pretty bad. No magic user is going to give up his progression of higher level spells for those Runes.

I no longer PnP, and there's no decent CRPG really built on 5th edition. I hate Bioware.

Just out of curiosity, are any of the board games fun? (particularly the new one, Temple of Elemental Evil)

They're not bad (I've played ravenloft and have ashardalon). If your looking for a good RPGish board game I'd recommend Descent: Journey's in the Dark 2e though. The DnD board games are a little shallow; Descent has cooler characters; progression and interesting encounters/maps of varying design and victory conditions. The DnD boardgames turn into the same random dungeon crawl every time.

The main difference is that Descent requires a Shadowlord ( GM ) and you really should play it over a series of campaigns instead of a one-off

The D&D boardgames are excellent. Very good mechanics and fun tactical combat with a neat randomized dungeon layout system. It's a lite combatfag game. Descent is the same but without the randomization, higher levels of imbalace and you need a DM. I'd rather just play PnP at that point.

I find that the game actually gets easier with the number of players. 4+ is pretty straight forwards- I've played with 4 and passed putting 2 finales in the deck and doing both. 1-2 is murderous. 3's about perfect.

Kobold press is running a kickstarter for a 3rd pary monster book for 5E:

As a DM more monsters to choose from is one thing I always want, and with only one official Monster Manual out yet I'm happily backing this for some extra reinforcements.

Here's a sample monster:

Gaze of Ancient Light (Recharge 6): DC 17 CON save or perma blinded.

Yeah...no.

Still brofisted as there could be some nice critters in there.

Those spells would be easily available to a party fighting a challenge 11. It's not exactly the instadeath from 1st level ettercap encounters back in the day.

That depends. Unlike D&D3e and prior editions 5e does not assume a party will have a certain number of magic items or clerical healing spells at any given level.

Though yeah, a DM worth his salt would make sure there is some sort of recovery/healing available before siccing the party against something like this.

At some point, wouldn't it be better to simply have no art? Heck how much would Kevin Siembieda charge for an illustration? I mean, he might want the copyrights for your book afterwards, but still...

An eye Golem rarely kills its victims, but leave them blind, wandering and tormented, seeing only visions of the eye golem flashing through their memory.

Wait, so that is supposed to be intentional?

Plus all of the monsters would be some kind of skull robot.
