Dark Sun has been announced at Gen Cn as the new setting for next year! Best of all they are using the original timeline (from the original box set). The cover looks awesome:

Heck if all goes well we could see a D&D4e pc crpg set in dark sun!

No but at least this might indirectly lead to a decrease of vanilla Faerun fantasy adaptations in future products.

do anyone on these forums still play boardgame D&D?

There's a boardgame D&D? I still play PnP D&D, but nothing newer than 3.5. After that it ceased to be a role playing game and became some marketing exec's idea of competing with MMO subscriptions.

The huge ad in my latest issue of Retro Gamer is directly targeted at WoW players. It's so dumbed down, it's doesn't even remotely resemble a pen and paper role playing game, and especially not Dungeons and Dragons.

I play three 3.5 campaigns, we play each one once every two months or so. One is faerun based evil party, one is planescape with plenty of exotic characters (I play a Githzerai) and there is a session of WLD which I DM.

The DM for the other campaigns was a player in the 4.0 edition of Star Wars. He told me it was basically 'dumbed down'. Not in so many words, but everything he said came down to that. Less skills, overpowered Jedi, special abilities and all that stuff. He has been playing DnD since first edition, so I guess he has seen the development of all those new editions, and this one was not any good.

Over there.
Um... board games? Do Steve Jackson's games count? I've played Illuminati a couple of times.

Oh, and while it's a card game, Munchkin is all sorts of LOL.

I'm no fan of 4E D&D (3E seemed like a logical progression to me, whereas 4E just doesn't seem like D&D anymore) but I'll pick this up for nostalgic reasons as we had great fun playing DS back in the 2E days.

4e sucks.

But Dark Sun rules, good news. I wish they brought back all the cult 2ed settings like Spelljammer and Birthright and flush out that newfag eberron crap.

This is going to be amazing, especially due to the brilliant 4e feature that player races don't ever get penalties to their stats and all start equal.

Half Giants in particular will be awesome with their +2 to STR and CON, which will make them completely different to Muls (+2 STR and CON) and Dwarves (+2 STR and CON).

4e DnD is the perfection of tabletop games and I won't hear a word against it. I particualrly like the way they simplified everything to make it easily playable by chimps, I always thought that DnD needed more morons playing it.

What can I say. I kinda like 4e, though I can appreciate that it is a little more skewed towards combat. From my experience the non-combat elements of the games I've played haven't suffered that much, but I find the combat considerably more enjoyable.

Download your SSI Darksun abandonware while you can. They will probably hunt down all of the places that have it after this re-release.

The better question is what will now happen with that Dark Sun MMOish thing that has been in the works these past couple years?...

From what I've seen, 4.0 is really just trying to bring in new players, which are used to MMOs and vidya games in general. They weren't expecting to appeal to the 3.5 (and below) crowd. :masteroftheobvious:

Obviousness aside, I wonder if it worked. I somehow doubt that it did. I think 4.0 has done more harm than it did good.

I don't think so, it certainly looks more friendly. But I guess anyone willing to have anything to do with D&D won't be arsed to do so with a simplification, so it probably didn't do much for the system either.

Well its encouraged me and a couple of mates back into the game. I liked 3 and 3.5. 4 just has a different focus, its not necessarily simplified, and its not necessarily better either. I suspect that its the different focus bit that puts a lot of players off.

Its very tempting to say somethings dumbed down, after all that makes you the smart cookie who refuses to stoop to the unwashed masses level. Not liking a changed product is a different kettle of fish, because it puts some of the "blame" back in your court. Sure, a lot of things are "dumbed down", but I think thats its a hugely over-used term.
