Yeah, vanilla DoW 2 is shit. They somewhat fixed it with Chaos and Retribution exp.packs but still light years behind of DoW1 with exp.packs.

I didn't mind DoW2 that much, particularly Retribution since it brought back some of the RTS mechanics for the campaign.

I also thought that the RPG gameplay fit it pretty well!

All I want is to play an Inquisitor, with a party of hard arse Angelae assisting me, dispensing justice one high calibred bolt pistol round at a time. Mind raping witnesses and suspects, burning witches and mutants, and calling down the Emperors wrath from the orbital bombardment cannon of my strike cruiser. Perhaps investigating something rarely used and freaky like a Genestealer cult, and if failing calling down an Exterminatus upon the world as a last resort.

Is that so much to ask?

The only great RTSes that Relic ever made were the Homeworld games. Dawn of War 1 was good, and Dawn Of War 2's campaign was good, but otherwise I don't find myself rushing to replay either of them.

I think Dawn Of War 3 though (if it is made) should ultimately be a combination of both games. The campaign gameplay being like DoW2 (more like vanilla/Chaos Rising, I didn't like Retribution's campaign gameplay) but they should go more of a Movie Marines angle than they did originally. The skirmish gameplay should be like Dawn Of War 1 with Codex Approved™ balance that relies on stats taken from the tabletop game, which would mean the game would tie-in content wise with the tabletop game and they'd be obligated to create new shit every 2 months when GW extorts cash out of children who have no idea how to save money yet releases a new edition of the game rules.

Do you think they could even do a 40k battlefield in a AAA FPS?

I mean imagine a single Imperial Guardsman peering out of his trench, a gargantuan machine god Titan striding overhead unleashing massive blasts of energy and ordnance, above it the blazing skies are torn apart as competing fleets clash, the thunderous artillery of Basilisks, Manticores and orbital batteries pulverising the landscape, from tens of thousands to millions of fellow Guardsmen putting concentrated Lasgun fire into the enemy, the blasts of heavy weapons teams, the rumble of tanks and APCs as they roar past, the competing WAAAGH!!! of the Ork hordes as they launch devastating counter charges. And your little guardsman firing his flashlight and hoping to survive a few seconds longer than his comrades.

Really it would have to be as hard as balls as well, to represent the massive loss of life that the Guard usually suffer, cover would only last seconds against weapons of that era discouraging the popamole approach, and hanging back would not be an option as the mad eyed Commisars level their pistol at your backs and scream at you to advance in His name. You couldn't cinematic this either, that'd defeat the whole point, you'd have to play and react to all the shit. Learn to find cover when artillery came down, leap up and run for your life, use your frags, kraks, lasgun and bayonet efficiently, hope your flak holds out, and just be fucking lucky.

Maybe if you survive as a young recruit you might get scooped up for stormtrooper training because of shown promise, or even earn the attention of an Astartes chapter and endure years of torture and training to emerge as the superhuman scout of a chapter. But I think the sheer scope of the 40k setting is beyond games at the moment. Perhaps that's a good thing, but i'd like to see a take on this one day.

Until then seems DoW style is way to go.

You reminded me of the absurdity of this IG character from Retribution.

Made the Troops Invincible with a nice DPS buff. I'll never know what they were thinking.

Retribution grew on me after a while. At first, I thought it was incredibly lazy (maybe it was), but the hero abilities made it fun, even though it was a simplified character progression system. Watching Diomedes splash gore across the screen from upgraded charge was satisfying in its own right.

I saw that. I did not notice the $2 cost , but that is ridiculous. Nothing attracts people back to a game like overpriced DLC.

I am replaying CR, and I will probably replay Retribution as well. While I enjoy Retribution's campaign, I wonder why they changed the campaign setup for the Blood Ravens. The switch from the silent Force Commander to a fully voiced Diomedes seemed weird and more costly. Moreover, CR ending screen stated that Diomedes would join the Force Commander in the next game if you had a low corruption score.

I realize Relic hit financial trouble, but the switch from the Force Commander to Diomedes still seems odd. That being said, I probably would not have enjoyed Retribution as much if Diomedes was not there to shout.

Retri is the only game where the protagonist is a male nurse. Actually I thought he was apoth on CR because of the white helmet but that's how the blood ravens 1st company dress.

Diomedes was a rare instances where I went from hating a protagonist to instantly loving them. After several hours of constant shouting, I started to shout along.

I only recently found out that the voice actor for Diomedes also did the voice for Joshua Graham/Burned Man from New Vegas.
