Nope. It pops up a game over screen, but there's a "Continue playing" button so you can say fuck it and keep rolling. Sort of like if you killed a plot-centric NPC in Morrowind and it would say "The line of fate is broken" or some crap but you could keep playing.

Edit: In fact, I think a lot of the negative endings come from continuing to play if you get a failure screen by missing a case file. At least that's how I remember it in DR1, not sure if DR2 handles that differently.

That's cool. Guess I'll give it a couple of proper playthroughs before I start to dick around.

Heh... Codex co-op in Dead Rising 2 would be kind of funny... especially if we call it "ITZ: This is like that thing Cleve was talking about".

Fucking masterpiece.

Damn, this game is more complex than I first though... I can't tell how many times I've nearly ran out of time on a critical task. I sure hope there's some sort of sandbox mode that unlocks after the story is done though... something tells me that I won't get to see all of Fortune City unless there is.

(Or a restart where you get to keep your previously earned levels or something.)

You're putting the stress on yourself by trying to save everyone, that's the quality of the games design. If you're on PC there's a trainer floating around that you can dick around with if you like.

I'll dick around with a trainer after I've finished the game a couple of times. Using it now would kind of ruin the whole lovely experience I'm having.

Yeah thats the point of the game, making you feel stressed like in a fucking zombie outbreak... I dont like too much these psycho, they are usually just annoying and become easy with a key strategy, instead of being challenging. Now Im fighting the fat virgin wedding boy and since he does a lot of damage I try to get him tired and hit him when he takes a breath... problem is this takes too long and my daughter has less than an hour to get her zombrex fix... I need a faster way to kill him

Fun game but some of the bosses feel rather cheap and completely out of nowhere.

It ends when either you or the child dies or the time runs out. In the first game it would only end when you died or time ran out. It's almost impossible to see and do anything in one playthrough, which really adds to the tension and replayability. So you've got to pick and choose your objectives.

I love how the game presents the zombies as a (lethal) obstacle instead of using them as the main protagonists. The limited saves and the fact that in order to save you'll have to negotiate the dangerous enviroment only add to it.

PS If you quit the storyline and restart it you keep the levels you had so there is no reason not to mess around. Though seeing how many triggers for endings and events the original had I wouldn't be surprised if it had some repercussions somewhere. Awesome game.

Watched a few videos from this... "game"
It looks even more awful than Borderlands. You just run around and grind passive mobs, get levels, grind more passive mobs, get levels, grind even more passive mobs. Another shitty console singleplayer MMO?

The game is all about the choices you are forced to make due to the VERY tight timeframe you have. The Zombies just add to the stress...

It's pretty fucking brilliant for a "console" game.

Not really, from my little experience with the game you just run from place A to be B avoiding the zombies.

I'm at the point where you have to give your daughter the second dose of Zombrex and I'm already bored out of my fucking mind.

Does the game get any better? Will the sidemissions start to have any variety? Or are they all just escort quests?

Try mixing some speed drinks, might help. Get a sword or some other fast and strong weapon and you'll do him.

Also so far I didnt manage to save only one survivor. The fucking old lady, she moved so slowly and I had to hurry. If I knew I could carry her then I'd save her as well. Do you need to save everyone to get the "real" ending?

No.
There's no way to understand the appeal of this game from watching gameplay videos though, so this time your attitude can be forgiven. It's nothing like Borderlands and it has plenty of variety and choice of how to approach objectives that you can't see at the beginning of the game. It's also really fucking hard.

But they just stand everywhere ignoring the player. So uh what do you do in the game anyway?

Does non-linear approach means "come from left side or right side" or is it about the ability to complete objectives in true non-linear ways? Like doing different actions

Rescuing survivors, clearing your name, explore and negate a huge and hostile enviroment, keeping your daughters alive, slaughter zombies, fight with psychopaths and use a shitload of items within the enviroment to survive, move around and do nasty stuff in imaginative ways. It's a fun arcade game which manages to capture the soul and ridicule of the zombie slasher genre perfectly. Did I mention that it is hard?

Fucking psychopats are too hard. Chef Antoine fight pissed me off, I don't think I will be retrying it until after I restarted game. I already failed the main mission, I'll probably just let the timer run out and then do the real playthrough.

I however do miss a small moment which in Dead Rising made me so happy. There was a small elevator near the safehouse which you constantly used to get to and from it. The first hour or so of the game that elevator was safe and empty. One of the very few areas of the game where you didn't need to be on your toes all the time. Imagine the shock when you strolled into it again and found it to be filled chockfull with zombies. All lunging for you. Loved that. Still waiting for something like that in DR2.

Grinding for levels ruins the game in my opinion, it becomes too easy with a high level character... but the final boss might be just impossible with too low level.
I think the best thing is to avoid grinding and just play as it comes... I sometimes need to repeat some bosses but none of them has been difficult enough to make me think I should have higher level.
Im liking it more than the first one, there more diversity and I think it takes itself even less seriously. Its what I call a plain fun game.
I miss that survival gamemode when you need to keep eating you tried to survive the longest time possible, and if you die thats it. Very rogue-ish.
As far as the port goes, I have to say I think its pretty good, a shame it uses GFWL though.

Yep, that was fun.

Been playing a bit so far. PC release is good. Mouse seems a little twitchy or jittery when I'm aiming a gun but other than that the controls are good. Haven't played much to compare the actual area to DR1 but first impressions are pretty good. Gonna keep going on this playthrough and if I fuck up a case file I'm just gonna keep rolling and replay for the best ending if need-be.

Just let a case file expire and then run around doing whatever the fuck you want.

SPEAKING OF WHICH, I LET A CASE FILE EXPIRE HURP DURP. Didn't even intend to, I thought the timer listed was just some free time until a new case file would arrive, so I was doing some survivor missions. As I was in the other side of the place, I get a call saying GET BACK TO THE SAFE HOUSE I FOUND SOMETHING and then I couldn't make it back in time. Since I blew it so god damn early I'm tempted to go ahead and restart, but I might keep running around anyway because what the hell it's fun.

Yeah on first glance that seems to be the selling point of the game so I'm surprised they don't put a free roam mode in it.

There's a trainer out with which you can alter the time (or freeze it, but that seems to screw things up) - use it myself to get enough time to save all the survivors.

Rewind a few hours every now and then and you have plenty of time to just mess around; without it you always have the next part of the main case right around the corner. Probably the devs' intention, yeah, but I don't much care for it. Don't want to replay the game five times either just to see all the content.
