Support tends to not work as a role in pubs anyways. Until you get past a certain threshold of skill, people don't farm well enough to take advantage of having a support hero making the map safe for them to farm quickly. In a proper game a single hero with no abilities at all can make 700+ GPM if left unmolested after the 6 minute mark. In the games you're playing, they'll maybe break 500. Maybe. Huge amounts of farm will be wasted in the jungle and empty lanes if you try to play a hard support role for a bad team.
If you want to support anyways, you need to learn how to support in a pub, which tends to involve aggressive warding (nobody ever dewards) and ganking the most vulnerable target repeatedly while keeping a TP scroll on hand at all times to defend towers or allies dying near towers. You'll need people to help you though, even against bad players solo ganking isn't viable if they just stick together or happen to have heroes you're ineffective against.
A very useful role to learn is initiator. A hero like Earthskaer or Sandking or Magnus that can stun multiple enemies at once and start a fight at a huge advantage for his team can turn the tide of games easily if playing with allies of similar skill level. Just be prepared to rage a lot when you line up the enemy team as the perfect turkey shoot and your team stands around doing nothing because they suck. But playing these kinds of heroes will help you recognize when big clashes like that are about to go down and help you to jump in quicker as either side when you're not the one starting shit.
