Let Dragon Age II lead designer Mike Laidlaw show you this combat gameplay trailer and explain how one can totally kick serious ass in an Action-RPG style or alternatively play tactically with pause and issueing commands.

Combat doesnt seem visceral enough for a modern combat rpg. Too slow, you cant button mash etc.

Neither does tactical part seem tactical enough for my taste. By far this game seems just like a bad game and nothing else, sry bioware.

Also encounter design seem as bad and boring as it was in original. Wtf. Dont they learn on their mistakes? I mean even if they cant make a good game is it that hard to make an interesting presentation?

I really don't like the interface that pits the status of party member on the bottom left.

If the video is trying to demonstrate there is no one set way of playing this game, may as well say that this is neither a pure action RPG or tactical one at that. Reminds me of Dungeon Siege more than anything wherein just mashing mouse buttons would be enough to overcome any challenge with the higher level of tactical pause and command merely being an accoutrement.

I'm glad they kept the option of having pause and play. I'm just worried that the difficulty will be too easy. Something that's challenging with pause and play should be nigh impossible in real time. I don't know how they are going to work that out.

In Dragon Age: Origins I would set up scripts for the characters and they would run off of those for trivial battles that didn't need too much attention, but sometimes there was just no way to win a fight without pausing and micromanaging every move each character made every few seconds. I like that and hope it's the same.

Combat will likely become so easy that the pause feature becomes meaningless as you wade through hordes of trivial enemies, button mashing to speed things along.

Reminds me of when I play Arcanum and eventually switch to realtime just to get the combat over quicker...

It's called difficulty levels. In DA1 the descriptions told you to play it on easy if you wanted to control just one character in real time.

protip for mike: 2:1 or even 3:1 is not "vastly outnumbered" especially when the AI is still fucking retarded.

Shitbanalboring. I will only play this popamole crap 5 times, and buy all the DLC only a week after release. Bioware crap is crap.

I dislike the idea of having these two separate combat systems awkwardly joined together. Unless they do an amazing job, you'll inevitably get a dodgy balance which will mean the only reason you'd ever use the action mode is because 'tactics sucks lol I want to chop the head!!!l'. This will inevitably mean that the tactics *will* suck, because in order to make the action part playable you'll have to make the encounters winnable without using the tactical mode, thus destroying the whole point of having it in the first place.

I would be shocked if they pulled this one off, unless they design it so that some encounters are meant to be taken at a fast pace and some require tactics to complete; that might work out. But I'd still prefer them to stick to one system rather than throwing everything they think is cool at a wall then pasting a load of yawn-inducingly protracted dialogue and dwarf sex on top of it.

Yeah, Bioware made the same mistake in Jade Empire. Too slow for a beat-em-up RPG. Less fun, more tedium.

Huh, I actually like combat in jade empire.

Anyway this trailer looks horrible due to a fact that we may see there's no real tactic in tactical mode - everything can be done via button smashing,

I can't say I didn't like JE's combat at all. Yet it would've been much better - and JE would've actually been a good game - had the combat been 1. faster paced and 2. less broken. Imho.

Yeah - I can imagine JE with full beat-em-up controls and abilities. Even a proper jump command, with associated jump-kicks and so on. You could still have crossed that with rpg stats and made it as much of a crpg as JE turned out to be anyway. I would have thought Beat-em-up play would mesh better than shooters (Deus Ex style meshing, not hard stat-driven): can adjust the damage, special moves, amount that block absorbs, attack-priority, knock-down effect, range of jump-kick, hp, time-to-recover-from-stun-effects...).

It seemed less like a case of not being able to combine the 2 types of gameplay, and more a case of Bioware not wanting to add a combat-gameplay that might actually challenge the players. They removed the strategic/tactical challenge but didn't put any action-challenge in to replace it.

And then we will read about statistics that 80% of the people did play with action controls or had switched to them so people don't want TB games.

Bioware can't do jumping because their maps all have those funny borders and are essentially just 2D.

Gotta give credit to LaidLawl, he really believes the shit he says. He's actually serious about DA2 being a big improvement over the first one.
