The fact that they don't have an updated release date yet suggests it could be delayed into 2021.

Yes? You post the release date then it's set in stone. You coordinate with your teammates to finish the product before deadline or you risk losing milions of profit.

In theory yes, thats good idea. but game development, especially those bigger more complex games are very hard to predict until like very close to finishing game, software development, especially game development are very unpredictable in nature. Dev studios just shouldnt set their release dates, since its always shoot in the dark.

Or they could you know have a roadmap with milestones based on previous performance, scalability and not redesign the game at least once after 4 years of pre-production. Developing games is not that different than constructing a skyscraper when it comes to resource management. You would expect a multi-milion product to be better managed. Also let's not forget crunch which again shows CDPR cuts corners and still can't meet their deadlines.

What's done is done. Better than releasing Ghost Recon: Breakpoint which is infested with bugs and lacks promised improvements or detail. I hope they have a study material to avoid any delays with their next big hit.

Developers get devkits of the new consoles months before they get released to end-consumers.

But they don't know when those consoles will be released they got to know it same way everyone else does by official announcement. Only insiders can have some estimate due to NDAs.

There's not many unexpected factors during skyscraper construction. The strenght of gravity will not change, basic laws of physics will not change, materials will remain unchanged. There's an infinite amount of variables that change while developing a big IT project.

There are several scenarios that might have gone wrong with a game. For example, during a play test of the most recent milestone the team might have found that several elements of gameplay just aren't fun. Now, during a dev meeting, you discuss ways to improve them. Tweaking everything will delay the game by a few months. Figuring out something entirely new to replace those gameplay elements might be out of the question, but might be required to rescue the whole thing. That means several months of work. Or the team might have come to a conclusion to remove feature(s) but that's not a simple selection of a few lines of code and hitting DEL on your keyboard. Many other areas of the game still depend on the removed feature(s) and will require tweaking, significantly redesigning or also removing, which will break other shit that will need to be tweaked, redesigned or removed.

Setting a release date for a game far in advance is always a gamble. Sometimes it's required to satisfy the publisher, investors or banks. If you have to delay the release, every day is a financial loss. You don't make such a decision lightly.

Or they wait for official consoles date announcements. It would be bad to announce your PS5 port of game to be released 22.10.2020 when PS5 comes 10.11.2020.

It's a total clusterfuck. The story direction, the gameplay direction, fundamental game mechanics are being constantly changed. Morale is at all time low because they (leadership) have absolutely no idea what they're doing. The disorganization at the highest level of the company is embarrassing, no one knows what the game is really supposed to be. Other dev teams worry if they'll manage to iron out all the bugs a year before release. Meanwhile, we don't even have a vertical slice ready.

I don't feel like translating everything else word by word, so the gist is:

  • Polish management members are constantly butting in with their "great" ideas (especially Adrian Ciszewski and Paweł Marchewka) and, without any prior consultations, order changes to the game which often touch fundamental design choices. This in turn leads to
  • Still no vertical slice being present, because basic game mechanics are constantly being reworked
  • Veterans hired from abroad are a great help, especially Marc Albinet (worked on Assassin's Creed: Unity), who is being held in a very high regard by the dev team
  • Management felt that Avellone's story and quest ideas weren't a good fit and imposed a lot of changes, game lost a lot of depth in that department ("The story won't be good. It came out very pretentious. Deliver this, talk to this guy, kill the zombies there. Chris's faction depth and complexity were flattened a lot. He wanted something empathetic, psychologically complex, multi-layered.")
  • The game is in a better state than all of this makes it sound. The biggest problem is that it's constantly being dug up, so there's no linear development progress.

Fantasy game made by their Warsaw team. Development started mid-2015 but has been on hold for some time. Officially it's scheduled for release 1-2 years after Dying Light 2, but someone "very informed" is saying that 2025 is more likely. Supposedly, the game will use all Dying Light 2 mechanics, but at the same time will be something completely different. The Witcher 3's Bloody Baron quest designer is responsible for the game's story.

The Bloody Baron was a great questline so thats good to hear. Dying Light was one of the more underrated games I've played in the last several years. Initial reports/tweets seem to have unfairly maligned Avellone, its a different creative lead there thats causing more of the issues from what I understand. Hopefully it gets on track, but to be honest I'm more interested in the gameplay and atmosphere than the storytelling.

Yeah, early tweets credited Avellone with things that Ciszewski did. As far as the article goes, there's only that New Vegas quote from one dev criticizing Chris.
