Weird they wouldn't include that seeing as it's older. Maybe they licensed middleware or something.

So when can we expect to see indie devs using the engine to make original games? How does it compare to Spring, OpenRA, Unreal, Unity?
There are some absolute lads who managed to wrangle the SAGE engine (but because the E in SAGE means Engine it should be called the SAG Engine) into playing a game that's a mix of Battlefield and Red Alert 2:

Sure, SAGE was also used for C&C Renegade, but still. Imagine what they can do with full access to the Renegade code.

They have been handling Command and Conquer well ever since the remaster. The guy in charge of these IPs, Jimtern, is a fan, and a pious Brother.
That aged like milk:

Good riddance lol.

Make our own games now that nobody else can.
Amen to that, brother. We can’t trust corpos to make good games anymore, so the best we can do is patronize indie devs.

I know this code is decades old and still needs a ton of work, but it’s a lot more than we had before. Not only that but, unlike Unreal and Unity, it’s actually designed from the ground up for RTS.

I know there’s the open source SpringRTS and Warzone2100 engines, but who even knows those exist? C&C has a huge fandom even today and that kind of critical mass would hugely benefit this code release and convince indie devs to adopt it over Unreal or Unity.

Looking at what modders with Generals is quite impressive already, but with most of the main code in their hands they can do things that were otherwise impossible. Rise of the Reds is some of that good shit, and Shockwave is great if you want something closer to what the core game is like. Fortunately GenLauncher was fixed in record time, and with the power of that we can look forward to a new golden age of Generals.

Neat!

Now if someone at EA would be kind enough to also open source all Ultima games, including Ultima Underworld 1 & 2...

Ultima 7 in particular needs the AI of the companions recoded from scratch.

Yeah, the fact that EA actually has source code from the early 2000s (if not earlier) is actually a surprise. Maybe we'll see Amazon, EA and IO agree to release the real version of Nightfire on PC?

bro they lost the source to Red Alert 2 and all the FMV for CNC1, the chances they have that source code are so low (it would cool to read though).
