The pattern is clear.
Dark Souls 2 (Souls)
Bloodborne (Innovation)
Dark Souls 3 (Souls)
Sekiro (Innovation)
Elden Ring (Souls)

Looking forward to more innovation in their next title :P
Dark Souls - great
Dark Souls 2 - a bit edgy, but great
Bloodborne - great
Dark Souls 3 - a bit railroaded, but great
Sekiro - Tenchu game, still great
Elden Ring - remains to be seen, but it looks like it's going to be great

All in all, it's good to remain guarded and steadfast as far as standards go, but it seems that the trend is that Miyazaki has a reputation he's willing to maintain.

Just curious, why do you say 3 is a bit railroaded compared to the others?

Dark Souls 1 had a ring given to you as a sort-of, I want to use the word "achievement", but it feels more like one of those golden stars you used to get as a kid when you did something right, but this time it's mainly used for being very good at exploring an area.

That part is a bit less predominant in DS 3. In my defense though, I may be wrong. I haven't played DS 3 to the nearly 1,5K hours I have in DS1. I think I barely have 200h.

The first few hours is going to the palace to that granny, totally linear.
Then (you kinda have choice), you go to the village with people with forks. Then you have sign, we really don't recommend you go to swamps first (there is smithing stuff close to entry to swamps however), and you can do cathedral branch before swamp. And after that there are two big branches, you either do nasty fight on black slime first, or the Giant fight first.

Actually, it might not be so uninteresting after all. Credit goes to Latro.

At Which iteration of Dark Souls will you be fed up? 1889512th? 645841257878878th? 15648451564789784551646878th?
The first option is for the average souls fan, the second is for the die-hard fan and the latter is for the extreme FS consumer.
Dark Souls in space, Dark Souls in the moon, Dark Souls in Mars, Dark Souls under the sea, Dark Souls in mountain, Dark Souls with space raptors, Dark Souls with ninja raptors, Dark Souls in the Far West with colt revolvers, Dark Souls with jump, horse and Yggdrasil, Dark Souls meets Subnautica, Dark Souls meets Prey, etc...

I'm still replaying the entire souls series once or twice every year (this year I haven't replayed Demon's Souls, but only because I gave my PS3 to a friend). So, considering that I am not even fed up with the first Dark Souls yet, I don't see myself getting fed up with future iterations anytime soon.

To be honest, I'm very surprised that so many people are upset with ER because it's too similiar to the earlier souls. My own concern with ER is that it's going to play nothing like a souls. I read somewhere that Demon's Soul was originally From's attempt to make their own Oblivion; I used to laugh at the notion, but when I saw ER I couldn't shake off the feeling that Miyazaki had been trying to make Oblivion his entire life - and was only now succeeding.

I do wish I am wrong. Sekiro was one of the best games of the last decade and easily my favorite From game by far, but I very much doubt I could get the same kind of enjoyment out of ER. At best it would be as good as BotW, which I enjoyed a fair bit despite its open world faggotry, but I doubt ER could match even that.

From Software presents: Skyrim

*the masses cheer unironically*

Not only is Skyrim re-released ad nauseum for every possible platform but it's also re-released through other developers. This is definitely the worst timeline.

Well, people shouldn't be too quick to dismiss based jap developers taking on a known formula.

Dragon's Dogma was Itsuno's idea of an open world action RPG, and it kicks copious amounts of ass.

I don't know. I assume at some point I will get bored.

Why are you troubled by whomever the games are for? If they are not for you then just move on.

The questions that arise from this discussion are something that has been on my mind for quite a while. Mainly, what does it mean to have a style in art? When does an artist have a unique style and what does it entail? Is it just self-repetition? And to what extent? In my opinion it is not just surface level elements. Artists that I admire and respect often create works that are quite distinct from one another, and yet they undeniably are the product of the same mind. The fingerprints of the creator can be found on their work, be it in themes they decide to tackle or the perspective on the world that said work presents.
