If the singleplayer and multiplayer are completely separate beasts yet you can easily transfer a singleplayer character over to a multiplayer game, what stops me from launching singleplayer, memory editing a few values to give myself an ungodly amount of credits, then hop onto multiplayer?
Please tell me there's a decent cheating/hacking protection in place.

That's not THE problem. The problems appear to be that

a) Single-player ships are stored in the cloud, therefore when company goes down, so does the game?
b) They most likely have way too much trust in the client in multiplayer, and not even something like PunkBuster working, which guarantees the multiplayer will become unusable within weeks of launch.

there are supposed to be two singleplayer modes. true singleplayer without cloud saves, server market updates, or the ability to play multiplayer on the character ever, and online singleplayer with all of that and the ability to hop between single and multiplayer at will. unless that got changed last couple months.
Joke's on you, I won't touch the multiplayer.
actually, joke's on you. multiplayer makes it even better.

There's a story by Robert Sheckley called "Milk Run", about a spaceship full of weird interstellar cargo with conflicting requirements on climate control, gravity and other factors, and two men's struggle to deliver all of it intact to get a payoff.

Trust me, if the game isn't doing calculations server side (like WoT), it will be hacked to hell and back. Someone cheating credits is the least of your worries...

As long as the private servers aren't affected, the russkies can hack to their hearts content

I really doubt these guys wrote the game from ground up to prevent hacking...and that these days is unfortunately a necessary evil in order to really avoid it.

hm, have any of you actually taken a memory editor and tried editing credits in multiplayer or online singleplayer, or are you guys just fearmongering?

I did for beta1. Reported it. Hole was plugged in beta2. Credits + ship configs is stored serverside in the multiplayer saves

You mean player A attacks people, gets a bounty on his head, and then Player B kills Player A for money? Because in that case I must congratulate to Player A for sacrificing his ship every time they do that.

So he does it at the beginning of the game, over and over. Player B gets a ton of cash. In the end, gives half of it to player A. Both go their separate ways and start playing "normally".

No credit transfers, now or ever. Yes, that's official.

Stop trying to outsmart the devs, you don't even have the game.

The fact that such a hole existed at all bodes poorly for the security of the base design. Such a mistake should never have even existed at all.

You're thinking too small. Player A *IS* player B, and they do this over and over and over and over. To him, this *IS* playing normally. BUILD MORE FARMS!

Except you can't transfer credits from one player to the other. And the time it's going to take to respawn in sidewinder, attack stuffies, fly to killplayer and suicide means you'll be making less creds per minute than if you were just trading normally.

He doesn't have to. The killee is a mule, and does not need to receive a share of the pay. The "stuffies" that will be attacked to acquire a bounty is probably also the same guy as well. I am also not sure how you would truly restrict transfers of wealth in a game where players can meet and rob each other. What stops me from loading up a ship full of valuables and allowing those valuables to be "stolen" or maybe conducting some illegal dumping? It's not Elite if there's no piracy and illegal dumping. Stuff like this is Classic Tradewars material, really.

Um, the perspective of losing a lot of money every time you do that?

:retarded:

Also, you'd have to attack a lot of people in a really, really short time to amass a big bounty. Your "friend" won't be satisfied by mere 500cr. And before you get a bounty on your head, you still have a pretty lengthy fine period.

You realize you don't get a bounty immediately, right? Attacking (not killing) someone is a couple 100 cr fine. Killing is a bigger fine. You have to go 24h without paying the fine before it gets converted to a bounty.

No, he doesn't, obviously. Both of those clowns don't know how the game works, actually.

It's the fucking beta 1. If there is a time when you can have these issues, is the alpha and beta versions.

No, he doesn't, obviously. Both of those clowns don't know how the game works, actually.
And yet they try to find faults where there are none. It's like they want the game to fail or something.

Jesus christ, if someone goes this far the cheat the game, and puts this much time to it, he might deserve the extra credit. But I don't imagine that players who want to have fun will partake in a convoluted scam like this.
