I suppose that some of the old men and women who are losing their shit over this can't see the advantage since they're from a generation which wasn't exposed to this kind of shit meaning that they have much less of a thick skin than the likes of me do... but I'd think it'd be possible for them to at least spot the benefits.

Oh well, it's their loss... I just hope it doesn't automatically become FD's fault as well when the unwashed masses take to metacritic to get their "revenge".

Some people prefer to play their games without amazing things like lag, ping, other fucking idiots or internet economy.
I am one of those people and sure as hell without offline this game is off my list completely.

So that leaves us old X3TC with XTended mod 2.2, XRebirth which with every patch seems to be a bit better (still far from touching even X3TC) and Star Citizent which is supposed to have both single campaign and offline sandbox.

If a Company like Blizzard can't manage to avoid heavy Serverproblems, probability dictates that a smaller and inexperienced company will struggle a lot more.
Having no guaranteed monthly income per player, but instead having to rely on selling Paintjobs to cover Serverfees. doesn't bode to well for the long-term security of having the Servers running.

What is hard to understand? Frontier Developments have not kept to their Kickstarter promises, first with Newtonian flight model and now with single player. For some people, these were necessary features which made them back the project. No wonder they now feel cheated out of their money.

This is somewhat understandable, but I can't agree with people who rattle their chains when one or two kickstarter promise is not met, if those are not core features. When you make a kickstarter pitch, you try to plan everything, but you only see the viability of these promisis when you are actually developing the game. Frontier didn't cut Newtonian flight modell and singleplayer, because they wanted to troll the costumers. The newtonian flight modell was probably not in line with their vision of how the ships are controlled. And I don't see why is that such a problem. The game still has a fairly realistic fligh modell compared to other arcade games, and you have to learn how to fly the ships effectively.

Minor complaints when one takes into regard that so many other things could have gone wrong. It'll be great for what it is and then expansions and updates will come along to make it better still.

This decision single-handedly converts "you bought a complete software product" to "you bought a thin client". You become dependent on the company's future and their competence of keeping up servers.

Let's not even get started on the fact that in the old days such company might've supplied their dedicated server code a la Quake, to foster modding communities, or just allow a few people to play together in a world devoid of hackers, or stick to a patch version which played the best. Let's forget that old pipe dream, we no longer expect this from developers.

But now they don't even have a product you actually own anymore. This isn't a full-featured MMO, it's a single-player game with a hint of MMO-inspired features.

Anyone defending this decision is an enabler for abusive developer practices.

I will request my preorder money back if this doesn't change before release date.

And here I just wanted a modern newtonian singleplayer space sim. Sigh.

Well, if almost everything relevant is handled serverside, this rules out modding pretty much.
Cosmetic stuff could be an exception, but since they have a paystore for this, go figure...

Well, handling shit serverside wouldn't necessarily be a problem for modding if they also released the server side stuff for people to use as private servers. But that doesn't sound very likely at this point.

Jesus christ, if someone goes this far the cheat the game, and puts this much time to it, he might deserve the extra credit. But I don't imagine that players who want to have fun will partake in a convoluted scam like this.

You read like you never played an online game where cheating/hacking was rampant. If it can be done, it will be done. If it can be abused to the point of breaking the game and creating a universe-swallowing singularity, it will be done. And yes it is fun to do. It is one way of playing a game.

Has there every been a free to play/buy to play MMO, which changed from free to subscription? I can't recall one. Because NOBODY does that, neither will Frontier.

An MMO is more than a server to which many people can connect. It is a game that provides MMO-specific goals, incentives and mechanisms of action.

ED is a single-player game which lets you see other players flying around. That is not an MMO. It is not an MMO, because it is a direct continuation of the design vision its creators had when they made the first Elite, which was also not an MMO.

I don't have a problem with MMOs being thin clients. But you have to be a very special cretin to call ED an MMO in its current state.

I rummaged through my emails for the old ks campaign letters. This was in one of the first ones I received:

The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

You can still play the game solo in a private instance that receives market data from the central server. Maybe people misinterpreted that as offline play? I can keep digging through the mails I guess, but it seems like the whole single player with online compoenent interactivity was a feature from day 1.



OTOH the same mail promised I'd be able to name my ship and we still haven't seen that in the beta. So much for having the SSD Nerdmandy written proudly along the side of my anaconda. :c

I very rarely play online games, so no, I have never played a game with rampant hacking, cheating. And the ones I played Battlefield 3, Secret World, Team Fortress 2, Payday 2 have no rampant cheating. BF3 might have some, but nowhere as much as to call it rampant.

Newfags should practice reading comprehension before talking bullshit. First, what does Braben making the first Elite have to do this game not having Newtonian physics? So he is obliged to make newtonian physics games for the rest of his life?
Second, I didn't call Elite an arcade game you fucking retard. I compared elite's more realistic controls to other games, which are arcade.

As far as I can tell from the beta, the only thing it gets from the server when you're in solo mode is market prices and station inventories/missions. Flying, shooting AIs, mining etc is all smooth. Never noticed any lag.
In multiplayer, you can also get some pauses when you're jumping to a new system or in/out of supercruise while it finds a server instance for you.

They can't really keep it that way though... How on Earth are they gonna stop hacking if calculations are being done on the client? A simple memory hack to force the hull value to 100% will make you invincible. Another could probably let you instantly destroy ships by pointing at them. Or instantly teleport you between far-away destinations. Set your cargo amount to ridiculous quantities and fuck up the entire economy for everyone, not just to make yourself rich.

We already went over the cargo hack things a couple of pages back. teleporting works the same way. You tell the server you're going from A to B, it says 'k or no 'k. It has your inventory (from when you visited the station or scooped) and modules, so it knows how long you're allowed to jump. And if you're playing PvP you're on their servers and they're handling the hull values. It's all pretty quick, even when I'm on ghetto wireless + laptop.

I guess a bunch of dirty cheaters are upset they can't haxx0r infinite money as easy as they thought. But since I don't care fo rthat, I don't really give a flying fuck about the QQ being thrown around.


That said, if this does upset you, you can and should feel free to not play this game at all. It's not going to impact my enjoyment in any way.

We were talking about online singleplayer though, in which case communication with the server is very limited. My point being that that's not realistic and that they'll have to change it to work the same was as online multiplayer in that the client lets the server take care of calculations.
