Factorio - a factory building game - now with Space Age expansion

I played this a bit, its a rather cool game. I'm afraid to really get into it because I don't have time to spend 30 hours building virtual factories right now.

I wish the game had mover arms that rotated stuff 90 degrees or pushed something one tile. That might make it too easy to make efficient bases, but I am bad at planning.

Check the mod section of the forums. Several mods screw around with inserters.

Though generally I just use tricks involving the conveyor taking a detour and then popping into the side of a new conveyor if there's too much shit backing up on one side of it.

This game is pretty awesome. Seems simple, but then just expands further and further and further. It's sort of like Minecraft meets Sim City minus all the clicking to get resources of the former. If you like building sprawling and complex systems of production, this is the game for you. It's a little sandboxy with most of its content, but they'll be expanding on the "campaign" as the game gets more polished. In the campaign it reminds me of Caesar or Pharaoh and games like that. Graphics are nothing amazing but fine, music is good and atmospheric, alien "threat" gives some purpose, though could be expanded.

Comparisons to Dwarf Fortress without it being terrible are also apt, though the focus is of course much different(focused almost entirely on production and building). If you like building stuff in order to build more stuff, while tweaking the efficiency of said stuff, so that you end up with a plethora of cool stuff....you can't go wrong with Factorio.

I think my favourite part is the sense of progression as you unlock and set up new things. The first time you build a car to haul massive quantities of ore from a distant mining operation at once, or set up a train to do it for you, feels great. Not to mention when you eventually have things set up like robots delivering the components for more robots to the assembly machines and the new robots to the roboports so they're effectively autonomously growing. Or harnessing your massive industry to build a suit of power armour so you can wade through an alien horde with a flamethrower while ignoring their attacks.

Car for me feels a bit useless. Once you get one most of the time you won't need to build another.

I think it would be awesome if car tech would later go to trucks and automated trucks with trucks being controlled via bit of ai and wympoint system (so ai won't be as stupid and hard to do). Trucks connection system would be worse than raiload system because trucks would be slower, bitters could outrun them and destroy them and since it is ai controlled player would need to clear road for them from trees.

Maybe road system adding to that ? Later in game you would get gasoline which would be better for cars,

Hmm, kinda like the game, but the further in I get the more the industry part seems like hard work rather than fun, especially with the more complex chains. That and, well, there's not very much game at the moment, just a sandbox.

Kinda reminds me of this other thing released a few years ago that had you building chemical factories and designing the production process inside them..

Well game point is to make those factories, chains of production and so on.

It is fun to make those things and the more complex chain you need to make the more fun game gets.

Sure, but it ends up with many of the same faults as the X space sim series.

True. I remember the first time I really got in X2: The Threat. I studied reams of data on the best cargo ships(Boron), best places to put energy satellites in high-security/low-security space, best way to setup freight runs for supplying the satellites with energy to run and also taken energy from them and turning said energy into credits. Best practices for assigning low cost escorts at key intervals, etc. It took me a few weeks, but at the end I had a few dozen satellites, 60 or so freighters with escorts intermittently, and just watching it all flow and raking in money. I'd leave the game running when I left for school and come back to tally my earnings and mark off my losses. At that point I could buy anything in the game, and it all started with one freighter purchase.

It was pretty great and rewarding to get to that point, and then after that I never touched the game. Not saying Factorio is exactly like that, but it could be for some people once you hit that end goal of what you wanted to do(myself included).

Stumbled on this sick indie strategy sim called Factorio last week, seems to be flying in complete stealth mode right now instead of going balls->wall on marketing. The result is a game that's surprisingly deep and fun to play.

Essentially you've crash landed on an alien planet, and using the advanced nanomechanics and automation of the future, you need to manufacture your way back off. This leads to building long-ass supply chains to automate your production of crafting materials en-masse:

Oh, but you're also under constant attack by alien lifeforms and need to keep those turrets powered and stocked with ammunition. Shit gets complicated, fast. It's really quite addictive though, feels reminiscent of the early Command and Conquer games in a way.

They're also adding multiplayer in a future patch as we speak, which should be interesting.

EDIT: I started playing the demo of this at 10am, bought the full game at 11am, and then suddenly it was 9pm and I had not eaten all day.

I put Factorio in the search bar, the search bar returned nothing, not even a post from other threads. 'Codex needs to work on their broken as fuck search engine if they don't want duplicate threads for smaller titles that fall off the front page fast.

I'm considering buying this, just finished the demo and it was awesome. Is it still being updated regularly?

It's being updated regularly, and they're pretty active on the forums as well as a dev blog. The game is currently "beatable", but it will take you a long ass time to get there due to the size of the tech tree.

There's a fairly active modding community as well. The last time I stopped playing this was actually because a mod was malfunctioning so I decided to wait until it was more polished. Game keeps getting bigger every time I go back to play more, I love it.

I hear ya. It's better to just do a goodle search by domain name.

This game is pretty good. The more people know about it the better. Though at the moment it's easy to hit a wall once you've completed all you want to complete. The initial fight and trial/error to get to "super factory" is a great experience though.

Did the aliens become an actual threat at some point? I gave some of the earliest released versions a try and they were mostly harmless.

nothing new on that front. Devs though have plans to change that later and that change is not included yet in their milestones so it is far away.
Still in near future they will give us tank.

Most of their time now they deal with multiplayer code and mentioned that they first time ever have more graphical content to implement just waiting for them to do scripting work (they hired programmer and artist) that earlier so this probably means after multi will be at playable state they will go back to content updates.
