CAD has a surprisingly unbiased news post on F3:

So my silence on Fallout 3 is less about unawareness, and more about quiet reservation. When Interplay first sold the license to Bethesday, who then announced plans to restart Project Van Buren (the original Fallout 3 project), I decided right then that I would not be buying into any hype, that I would not be getting my hopes up for the Fallout 3 that I and other Fallout fans had been waiting ten years for.

Don't get me wrong, Bethesda is a great developer, and Pete Hines is a great guy. But we're talking about a game here that was what it was due to a very specific combination of certain elements, and now not only had Black Isle closed, but the license had moved to an entirely different company. There was a very real possibility that we'd end up with a shiny, fancy, post-nuclear game that just didn't feel like Fallout.

So... I sat back, watched, waited. I've seen some stuff that made me say "Mmmm, Fallout", and I've seen some stuff that made me think "This looks like Oblivion with guns..." I'm still not sold one way or the other, to be honest. And frankly, I don't imagine I will be until this time tomorrow, when I've had my hands on the game for a few hours.

Wait, Buckley actually said something decent. Too bad his comics are still shitty.

These fuckers have to be kidding, right?

If another actual nuclear test, even at 50's yields will turn this planet into mars how the fuck is this realistic?

SUPER MUTANTS?

I mean, these fuckers even forgot nuclear winter.

The pulp 50's style gave the lack of that shit, and of all of the shit we will soon learn about nuclear weapons some fucking credibility.

Desslock used to be a somewhat decent reviewer, but some time between Morrowind and Oblivion, he must have come down with an acute case of dumbfuckery.

No, Desslock's been that way since the mid1990s. He's always adhered to the teet of whatever big name developer is around at the time and suckled until the developer became light headed from the blood loss through the hickey. In the mid1990s, it was BioWare. Now it's Bethesda. Every new RPG from the big guy is the bestest thing EVAR. Same guy, same sycophantic way.

He's also the guy who proclaimed that the chances of BIO getting a publisher for NWN after they BIS/Interplay was almost nil.

Not surprising he swallows what Bethesda spits out as he's exactly the same way as the Codex is for Obsidian except he admits.

He's also the one who paid a visit to Beth HQ shortly after or before Oblivion's release, and then came to spread meaningless and misleading impressions, where he supposedly witnessed early FO3 development and he knew whether the game would be iso + TB, but when asked with a straight face, he could only say "you'll be surprised". Quite the weasel.

Not something I ever said, regardless of the fact that you also misquoted it in 2007.

I think my actual statement was in response to someone stating the game would be entirely first person perspective, real-time combat -- which I said wasn't entirely correct. I was obviously cryptic, which I can understand is annoying when you want more information or clarity, but there wasn't a clear answer that could be given at the time, and I was trying to pass on what information I could -- I just knew that Bethesda was working on something that would become VATS, so I knew there wouldn't solely be real-time combat, but at that stage of development everything was still in development and being tweaked.

This misquote is particularly disappointing, since I not only never said this -- at the time, I actually I provided an extremely detailed accounting of the development of NWN, the D&D and game intellectual property license rights, the reasons why a D20 version wasn't possible, the background behind the Interplay/BG lawsuit, and otherwise explaining why a deal had to be worked out with Interplay before the game could be published by Infogrames or anyone else (as Atari was then known, which was the only other party with the rights to produce D&D computer games then - not even franchise owner Hasbro/WotC could grant those rights to another party at the time).

I read the lawsuit pleadings, had rare access to the actual terms of several of the commercial agreements, and as a corporate lawyer I had the ability to provide a more informed perspective on the rights of the parties, etc., and obviously had some gaming insider contacts as well, so I offered the kind of detailed analysis on a interesting issue affecting RPG fans that I doubt anyone else in the gaming media would be able, let alone even inclined, to provide.

Just particularly disappointing to get completely misquoted/misinterpreted by someone who I'd have thought would have been among most interested audience for that sort of information/analysis.

So how much are they paying you Desslock? Or do you take payment only in 'curative fluids' form?

Well, I know I'm sure glad to have The Truth™ so clearly elucidated after all this time.

I think RPG Codex should just stop posting news articles about shit like F3, sort of how RPGC handles MMO's. F3 is not an RPG.
What would Vault Dweller do with his 1000000s of hours of time? If anyone has built a monument in honor to Oblivion, it's VD with his tirades.

You have to occupy your time somehow after giving yourself a 3rd vacation in this year along with a huge bonus.

Wrong. That's the past. He is currently the RPG honcho for PCGamer, the only remaining US magazine dedicated to PC Gaming.
