The funny thing is, at no point did I suggest that the cultists in FarCry 5 make rural Americans look bad; they're just weird and inauthentic. I only played for 10 mins but it seems exploration could be legit enjoyable now (to some extent), as opposed to mindlessly running to loot/relics and other such points of interest. Said things also do not appear on the full screen map.

It can't be true, Ubisoft love their mindless map marker rundown collectathons. There's probably maps you can buy from shops or something...

You can talk to various NPCs and they will reveal location of outposts, prepper stashes, etc...
It does have some good interface design choices. You can choose a mouse-friendly grid weapon menu instead of usual circular one popularized in other console games, small "an objective is near" notifications appear on screen to even make you deviate from the main path more, the map is fully 3D so you can track outposts manually (usually a factory or a bunch of buildings near each other that can be heavily populated) instead of asking NPC. I'm still disappointed that the game doesn't allow switching off the entire HUD with one button, and pressing E to loot seems iffy because the game often acknowledges the action as holding E to switch weapon when looking at a corpse.
It's also 2018 and we still only have one single slider for all audio elements.

- complete, utter shit and pretentious story as always, including a terrible, contrived ending that desperately tries to make sense of the messy 30 hours you played through, though this time we don't even have a fun villain to dull the pain of a story that is simultaneously edgy as an angsty teenager and thinks it's really saying something deeeep

- tighter gunplay

- no towers, somewhat better mission structure - new save system is annoying but also prevents save scum, making perfect outpost clears harder (but on the flip side getting undetected ratings doesn't matter much)

- MTX system doesn't matter despite the butthurt internet - you'll wade in enough dough to buy everything you want, cosmetics included, even if you pay little attention to side quests

- companion system is the only gameplay add-on to speak of, but doesn't really matter so use them or don't it's whatever

Final score: play if you want more of 3 and 4, tab out and check your mail or watch some youtube while cutscenes play / 10
