Is the story of FFXII good, compared to, let's say FFIX, which I'd say has a good story.

Have you played FFT or Vagrant Story? The story in FFXII is made by the same person who did the stories for those games. It has a samey feel as them. No saving the world, it's all about politics and theatrical drama. I think its very fun and interesting. The villains aren't typical incarnations of darkness, but real characters with their own motivations. They aren't evil, they just have a different point of view.

Nice! That's exactly the type of story I like, I'm getting more and more tempted to try out this game, even though I still can't say that the combat system appeals to me.

I found the story of FF12 extremely boring, but I loved FF7 and FF10 stories. Make of that what you will. :smug:

Too bad Ramza and Ashley were Bro-tier protagonists while Vann is just kinda "there" for the entire plot.

Strange, I always got the impression that you hated all JRPGs. I haven't played FF7, so I can't tell. In FF10, most of the characters, except for auron, are pretty derp, though kind of in a loveable way. And the story surrounding the characters was something I thoroughlly enjoyed.

The game has an ensemble cast; no main characters. The story isn't even told from his perspective. Comparing Vaan to Ashley or Ramza doesn't make sense. Since he's mostly in the background I don't even see the point in complaining about him.

Yeah, but FF12 was political melodrama for the sake of political melodrama. + The characterers never gave you the slightest reason to care about them. E.g. Baltiher "oh look I'm a badass sexy pirate with a sexy voice and a bunny girl fuck buddy", Basch (?) "regenegade dude whose father is sorta evil", etc - the characters are given a slight background, and that's it, no chactacter development no nothing.

FFT Ramza on the other hand was a hero you felt sorry for, the youngest brother in a family that went mostly rotten, trying to do his duty and keep his sister out of harm's way against all odds, which ended up with both of them dying (?). Delita, the idealistic mercenary to ambitious Machiavellian sort of type, a tragic figure as well - from Ramza's childhood friend, to losing his sister in a tragic accident, to plotter/betrayer, to a dying (?) Regent at the hands of the person who was closest to him. And there are many, many more. FFT's story is both epic and personal.

Vagrant Story didn't even aim for epicness, it's just the music and the atmosphere and the visuals that shaped it into a memorable experience.

FF12 tries to be epic, but the characters are far too bland so the epicness never grows on you. It feels formulaic. I played through it once, and I can't even remember half of its cast, or the villains, or whatever.

I found the characters to be fun and likeable in FF12. Some of the best characters in a FF game in a long time. None of them made me want to gouge my eyes, not even Vaan.

Talking about FFT story and comparing it to the other Final Fantasies is pretty pointless. It's a monster in its own league. Out of all the Ivalice games it has the strongest plot. There's no argument here. Final Fantasy 12 is still Final Fantasy, hence why the story isn't as good as it is in VS and FFT. It's just Matsuno's vision of Final Fantasy with him trying to get as much of his own influence in the game as possible without the suits tying his hands.

I don't really care if a game is epic or not. We need more games that strive not to be epic.

You can pause in XII at will, though (unlike other FF). so it's ATBwP? :M

I think the way I remember it was that ATB was just where the enemy would be able to continually attack you even while you were choosing an attack in the menus. So their battle gauge or whatever would keep charging. You could turn it off so when one of your characters turn came up the enemies gauge would pause and you could take your time choosing an attack. After you chose an attack enemies and party members gauges would start charging again.

Sad thing is, games older than FF7 still had better looking cutscenes

As a person who basically can't stand anything that comes out of Japan nowdays (porn movies including), I'd say that FF7 is a really good game, if not the best of it's kind (though I really don't want to involve myself into any FFY vs FFZ dispute).

Square was a different company back then and they were on a killing spree in the late 90's, throwing out titles like Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Legend of Mana, Front Mission 3 or Parasite Eve. Many of these games are forgotten and/or underrated, someties simply outshined by the success of the other square games (FF7 vs 98) or popular titles from the similar genere (Parasite Eve vs Resident Evil). Of course if you can't get over spiky hair or the 'Butcher'a Sword', then you'll be unable to find anything appealing in the game, yet I really wouldn't call it emo bullcrap if that's what really bothers you. Actually the story - backed by the cyberpunk post-war setting - is quite dark and mature (as are the characters; Cloud is 21, Barret 35, Cid 32, etc., which is rare in jRPGs). FFVII also has some great piece of music and very coherent and customisable character development system (IMO puts in shame any other FF). So it's more than recommended to at least give it a try.

The game's popularity became it's tragedy after Squaresoft mutated into SquareEnix and started to release... well... this (I mean all the appearances, spin-offs and the CGI movie):

Fortunately the original game itself has really not much to do with later faggotery and flying bishonens.

Some 90's vs New char designs:
