I think castles will work in a similar fashion as fortifications in P&S or FoG2:Ancients. But there are also wagon units. Knowing Slitherine/Matrix they will continue milking the playerbase with constant DLC's, so I have no doubt we will eventually see Hussites.

Looks visually outstanding. Imagine if Slitherine actually incorporated these directly into the Empire series instead of splitting them off. A medieval game like empires with the FOGII battles built in could be a market banger. Watching Slitherine explain how to export, play, import, resume, a battle from Empire>FoGII>Empire makes me want to shake them by their collar while I scream from a megaphone about how important ease of use is to appealing to new customers.

Doesn't matter too much to me, I can't get FoG2 to install anymore. Steam just says "DISK WRITE ERROR", even though it has no issue installing or playing literally every other game in the library.
Have you checked if your antivirus does give a false positive?

I tried turning the antivirus off, no such luck. Maybe it's a good thing that this is released as a stand alone game, because that means it will install.

It's nice they are adding rus faction for a change. This just might be the thing I need to get into the game.

According to the devs, the medieval timeline will end around the year 1500, so I reckon they'll introduce Hussites as well as early gunpowder units.

The plan is still for the FOG2 _system_ to eventually cover 2500 BC - 1500 AD from Britain to India, with FOG2: Ancients covering 2500 BC-1040 AD, and FOG2: Medieval covering 1040-1500 AD.

We felt that although the underlying game system remains substantially similar, the Medieval period merited several rules changes to better suit the period, including a rebalanced points system to better reflect the changed balance between the different unit types in the Medieval period.

The Medieval period was thus better separated off as a game in its own right rather than DLCs for FOG2: Ancients. This allowed us to give it a new Medieval look and sound, and also take the opportunity to improve the UI.

The devs claim there's too many mechanical differences for them to make it just another FoG II expansion but I'm curious as to what. I think the light unit stuff mechanics would start to feel very weird by the high medieval era. I can't imagine they will have many siege/castle-oriented battles simply because they are not very fun in the engine (this includes not just Field of Glory but Pike & Shot, Sengoku Jidai etc) but just a grind of dice rolls without any opportunity for manoeuvre, flanking or ambush. I do remember some good siege relief scenarios from Pike & Shot however.

Finally I can whip some Muslim ass!

FoGII already has a lot of pre-1066 Muslim army lists.

I just randomly tried reinstalling it and now it works. However, now I can't log in to the multiplayer; did slitherine have a server wipe or something in the last year or two? I will just make a new account I guess.

Anyway, has there been a final word on cross-compatibility between the ancients and medievals? I don't care too much for the medievals, I just want any improvements to be shared across all eras. Also, I want the multiplayer to get a big boost (although I assume there's plenty of people still playing fog2, haven't looked yet).

For FOG 2 players and presumably the new medieval players, remember to always do this:

Go to your steam\steamapps\common\Field of GloryII\Data\ and open MAPVIEW.TXT

change to

PITCH 45
PITCHLIMIT 35 // 25
ZOOM 400
ZOOMLIMIT 1200 // 200
ZOOMINLIMIT 100 // 10
ROTATE 30
FOV 30

Tinker with the numbers to get it right, but this gives you a lot more freedom to position the camera.

Basically, if Slitherine merged the battles to the Empire series, i think it would spell the end of the Total War series for most but the most graphic whore idiots. Total War series has been creatively dead for quite some time, and if not for Warhammer licence no one would care about them at this point. Slitherine are shooting themselves in the foot here.

What happened? Steam was saying it would be available in less than an hour and now it's just saying it's unavailable.

EDIT: Apparently coming at 6PM UK time, which is 1PM EST.

Multiplayer in this stuff is a breeze to organise actually. No file-swapping required. You can even set it to email notifications.

This quote got my attention

But that's not all, a patch for Field of Glory II: Medieval will soon arrive and will allow all owners of the game to create their own “Time Warp”. Through this new feature it will be possible to create an infinite number of customized "what-if" battle situations that can be played against an AI or in multiplayer, making the armies of the ancient era collide with medieval ones. Have you ever wondered who would win the battle between the Carthaginians with their War Elephants and a handful of Teutonic knights? Soon you will have the chance to find out.

That's really nice. Count me in for a PBEM game, then.

Is this one of those games where you just play individual battles and there is nothing connecting them together like a campaign system?
