Do people say games aren't art anymore? There's like Baftas and shit for games now, and you hear videogame soundtracks on Classic FM. I think it was just something people like Roger Ebert said decades ago because their impression of videogames was Pac-Man and Asteroids.

Morrowind beta
Never seen it before. I kinda like it

One could argue that Pac-Man and Asteroids are great example of videogames as art language, as art medium. The most distinct thing in videogames is interactivty, no other form of entertianment have interactivity of a video games. So such games should be celebrated as art more, than games that tries to be like movies or other shit, IMO

Videogames require the combined efforts of countless artists to be made, and therefore should be considered art.
Like, that's it, it's a purely logical conclusion.

Art is the expression of the human spirit, therefore the men who spent countless hours designing dungeons, creating maps, writing dialogue, rendering the intro, capturing animations, drawing the sky, etc, are all artists and should be considered as such.
A more cynical view would be that videogames are nothing more than a product, created in a assembly line by bored wagies who couldn't give half a shit about their work, and this is also right because there are plenty of videogames that were made like that. But then, it all becomes subjective since some people will say that the latest Call of Duty is a masterpiece while scorn at Ico or Pathologic.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter since ''art'' can be reduced to a label that has no real value beyond what you personally give it.

This is a guy who enjoyed Prometheus (2012), a crock of horse shit, and criticized The Thing (1982) or Blue Velvet (1986). One of the most hated and disliked people in cinema.

There is good and bad art, but that is another matter.

It takes a lot of electrical work to build a modern house. But a modern house is not an electrical system.
But you could point to the electrical system which is part of the house.

So when we have video games which are made up of a combination of visual art, music, literature, and sometimes acting, all of which are individual forms of art...

So when we have video games which are made up of a combination of visual art, music, literature, voice acting...

... you get a pan-art form

That is not how it works. Not anymore than saying that a human is a pan-tissue form. When thing A has a thing B inside it, that doesn't make A an B. A car is not an engine, a man is not a muscle and a written argument is not an alphabet.

You want to argue games are art? Nice, go ahead, but make an actual argument rather than just handwaving. Games can lack music, graphics and be as abstract and devoid of art in its components as possible for anything, and still be games. And still even be fun. If you want to type A games is a subtype of type B art, then you need to come up with a definition for both and hopefully draw the conclusion from that.
