Can you recommend some party-based games with soft permadeath (like Wizardry and Ultima 3) and nice open world exploration and NPC interaction? Bonus points if they're not blobbers. I don't like to lose all my progress after a TPK, so games with an optional ironman mode are not enough (also, those games tend to be balanced around the reloadfest anyway).

In before larpers and knights of self-imposed challenges.

Not party-based, but Legerdemain has a sort of soft permadeath: inns work as one-time save points. You can still lose all progress, though, if you forget (or don't have enough gold) to check in again after resurrection (happened to me more times than I have patience for).
