Games you're buying this month?

Fastpunk, if you haven't noticed you can't win. BG was done 10 years ago, but the sad part is that BG can still cope with modern graphics. Which looks more beautiful is not worth the argument. God knows what would 2D games look today if they were still made and if companies invested in it's progress. But screw the graphics, ok? My main gripe is with 3D party based combat system really.

The characters in BG are an eyesore. The backgrounds in BG2 are nice... *cricket* *cricket* yeah, nothing else is good about BG's graphics.

And making things more detailed in 2D is much harder, due to having to detail 8+ sprites instead of one model. ToEE looked nice, the 3D models on 2D backgrounds worked well.

But Far Cry 2, or hell, even Fallout 3 in full 2D? Bleh. No fucking way.

Far Cry is a shooter and if it was made in 2D it would be moronic indeed. I am also not for complete 2D you know. I like 2D backgrounds with 3D character models. That is ideal for me. I just don't understand why devs aren't using it. But now I know, since mr. Obsidian guy was nice enough to answer me.

And BG has aged very well. I have that "immune to flamers perk" you know?

Anyway, on topic. No new games for me until Dragon Age comes out.

Heh, then we agree. Typical Codexer behavior, trying to find an argument out of agreement.

Why the fuck are you buying DRAGON AGE? That shit looks like it could be worse than (insert Codex's current least favorite RPG here)

You could spend your money on games like Fallout 3 and Storm of Zehir, but noooo, you needed DRAGON AGE.

Again, you were the one who said 2D looks 10 times better than 3D. I tend to disagree. As I said, better looks are independent of the tech you're using.

Then you shouldn't have brought it up maybe? I believe this is how you started your argument: "Which of these three screen shots looks the best to you."

OK. What exactly is the problem?

You have to adjust the camera every few seconds, which just breaks the game play. It's not unplayable, but if it was done in 2D, the problem would not even exist. It took me around 30 minutes of testing the camera to finally find a satisfying combination, but again it was not nearly as good or satisfying as camera in Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale where you had perfect overview of the battlefield. Then there was the pathfinding, like characters getting stuck for no apparent reason or ignoring my commands completely, and some other things that annoy me a bit in 3D, but they are connected with animations, but I don't want to go down that road again, since I can live with bad animations and some graphical glitches.

You're generalizing. If NWN2 got the camera wrong it doesn't mean that all 3D party-based RPGs got/will get the camera wrong. I don't see how this is relevant to the "2D is 10 times better than 3D" thing, even in the context of party-based combat systems.

And btw, puh-fucking-lease give me a break with the pathfinding. NWN2 did not have worse pathfinding than BG series. I think we all can remember pretty well how annoying pathfinding could be in Infinity Engine games. But that's besides the point.

Well I'm gonna get Barbie Horse Adventures and Bratz...oh what are we talking about now? Oh yeah! And Fallout 3, because with a post count as low as mine all you need is more enemies!

So anyway.

So far this month I've purchased:

1: Gun - $4
2: Hammer & Sickle - $2

I'm pretty sure that's it. People who buy games on the day of release are either suckers or they want to support the developers (I will be buying AoD shortly after it's release ... on Thursday).

I'm a big fan of bargain buys too, but I'll periodically pay full price for games just to make a statement of support for the developer. That doesn't happen often though.

Witcher EE - been waiting on this one

And now for the cat-calls:

Star Ocean: First Departure - meant to play it emulated and patched on the SNES for years now, loved SO2
Korg DS-10 - if you can't see the beauty of this piece of software, I have nothing to say to you.

So, Mareus states he's not a graphix whore, but he's spent the last two pages pointlessly arguing about how graphics_x are better than graphics_y. Makes sense.

You just love abuse don't you? There is a very loud and obnoxious group here who are determined to hate anything new and you are only going to give yourself a rectal rash trying to reason with them.

And I have top of the line PC, and I can tell you those screenshots are fake. NWN2 never looked so good on my PC, even with all the details on. Even if there was no face lifting used, I can guarantee they have been adjusting the camera to get the perfect angle, just like you can see on some Oblivion screen shots. Once the camera moves however, it all changes dramatically. And I stand by what I said, that 2D games look better than 3D even when compared with new games. You just used some promo screen shots taken from IGN. Why not actually take a gameplay moment screen shot?

And again I repeat all the screenshots I showed were taken in mid action, so all three screenshots got the same treatment.

These are all shots taken by somebody while playing the game using one of the default game cameras (some of which allow you to move the camera around with the PC as the focal point). None of these are painted-over or post-processed.

Why am I not surprised to see that this thread ended up as yet another part of Mareus endless campaign against the LOL-stupid rest of the world? Give it a rest, dude.

So far I've only bought the remake of Colonization. Still waiting for Bully: Scholarship Edition.

So far this month I got ToEE for free from a friend, thinking of getting King's Bounty as well. And of course Storm of Zehir when It's out...

I worked in politics and went to law school before entering the game business, so engaging in reasoned discussion is a compulsion of mine.

I think what's bad about NWN2 is that the areas are designed to be viewed from an over-the-shoulder camera, like in Kotor, yet such a camera was unusable because of the awkward control system. So a lot of the work put into area design is wasted and they look really plain from a top-down view.

I liked Tactics, it was OK, but it wasn't really canon with regards to Fallout lore. I would pick it up if you haven't got any games to play right now.

Yeah, what game is this? It looks awesome.

I am quite positive the screens are taken from Sacred, but the HUD is different.

uh, i dont really think those screens look very much like... this:

Check the first screen. The figure on the left is evidently a dark elf model and the one on the right is a female bandit, while the second picture is one of the last locations (Shaddar-Nur if I recall correctly). They should be familiar if you played the game. The house on the first picture is also familiar, while the chest inside is straight from the game too.

Request: If you post screens of yet unknown games be so nice and write the name. I recognized the NWN2 but the others look interesting too.
