Ghostwire: Tokyo - a new action adventure from The Evil Within studio

Looks shit.

Review does. I tend to like that guy be he is prone to these exaggerations and they are becoming worse and more low effort with time.
Imagine saying that that looks like visuals from 20 years ago, and he has been writing about games longer than that. Not to mention that he isn't even playing on highest setting but is using something p mixed as you can see at the start.

Both of the reviewers mentioned in this thread (Gmanlives and Worth a buy) used to be fairly entertaining, but recently they've both become really formulaic and boring. Worth a buy is just trying way to hard now and is starting to get on my nerve with his chimpouts and antics. Gmanlives has done all the old school shooters worth mentioning and is now running on fumes. His videos on new games are just meh.

Holy fucking hyperbole. I'll be generous and post the best looking game of 2002. It was between this and Star Wars Jedi Outcast.

This doesn't look like a game from 2002. Say what you will about Ghostwire Tokyo but it's a good looking game and the art direction is solid.

WAB's video on this probably is a bit of an exaggeration for effect, but the game does indeed look fucking terrible. As do all of the games he "chimps out" about for that matter. I share his frustration on the state of the 'higher end' gaming industry, particularly compared to how good it used to be.

The environments are top fucking notch.
Really enjoying looking around the subway tunnels.

I'll try to pretend I didn't just see a bunch of people posting youtube videos as an argument for anything.

Since I'm actually playing the game instead of whining like the usual GG suspects on the first few pages, I wanted to praise the environmental work again. Some of the most detailed texture work you'll ever see. I've not been this captivated by attention to detail in a long time.
In addition, this game features a really in-depth dive into Japanese folklore, with hundreds of items, documents and locations meticulously detailed in text, it takes at least an hour or over to go through it all.

Infinitron can you just move it to JRPG forum? General Gaming is legit depressing, it's just a bunch of boomers posting their favorite youtubers' takes without ever actually playing anything. The game has a skill tree (which instantly qualifies it as an RPG according to Codex standards) and is 100% Japanese.

:) So many cool tidbits! I love reading about all the folklore.

Not always. A game like Borderlands has skill trees and those games aren't treated like an RPG.

Normie introvert definitions are of no interest to me, I just want the thread moved to a place where it might get some more attention. As far as I'm really concerned, if you're not playing tabletop, you're not playing an RPG.

Why though? How come that Borderlands games aren't RPG's but some more conventional Diablo clones, even if they might be simpler in terms of character customization or item variety, are?

Well, games like D3 certainly aren't RPGs in my eyes, either. We should be excluding more games from RPG forums (and moving them to General Gaming), rather then complaining that the opposite isn't being done.

Diablo and its derivatives are staff favorites, they're not going anywhere. Is there a reason you want this to stay here? Are you playing it?

Because no one can agree on a definition of RPG (as a videogame) so where a game goes depends on where the OP creates the thread and no one demanding it be moved. This would be a RPG if Obsidian made it.

Been playing for a few hours. It feels like Tango expanding on what they tried to do with Evil Within 2, which was their first attempt at crafting a horror themed open world game. Seemed like they abandoned that idea part way through TEW 2's development. It's cool to see them take another crack at it. I'm enjoying it so far but I can see it getting repetitive after a while. The upgrade tree doesn't seem very interesting which is a problem. Lasting appeal will come down to quality of side quests and exploration.

Not enough buildporn or C&C for me. I quit once it brought my 3080 to its knees doing rtx at 1080p. The gameplay is very simple and boring. Just walk backwards and pew pew at slow moving enemies.

So I just
helped a ghost wipe it's ass while it was taking a huge shit. Neat side mission.
There's definitely something to this game. I think it's mainly the game world. It has a nice verticality, look, and atmosphere to it. Just really well designed and fun to run around in. That's it's biggest saving grace because when you boil the game down it's really just another Ubisoft style open world game. It's got character though. Side missions are usually short but sweet. Nothing Witcher 3 tier but they're fun little distractions.

Gave this a try recently and it's meh. Calling it a Far Cry-like is a disservice, since Far Cry gives you a massive toolbox of toys to experiment with and a wide-open world to experiment in. Ghostwire doesn't have that big toolbox, it has three "guns" (elemental attacks, can be charged up for an alt-fire but that's it) and a bow, that's pretty much it, along with a blocking move and some stealth that's even more rudimentary than Far Cry's. Seemed like the game blew its load in the first 90 minutes, nothing new really happened after that. The world was cool at first but extremly repetitive, I never found any environments different from the endless streets and alleys, maybe I didn't get far enough in the game though. Combat and enemy AI is braindead.

I could see Ghostwire being a good time for someone who really likes the setting but its charm wore out quickly for me. It's a shame the game doesn't have more to it because there is some originality to the concept and setting (and some beautiful graphics), relative to most triple-A titles at least.
