You can do rollbacks on Galaxy, but not with your offline installers.

I buy new games on Steam because I know they'll be patched/maintained. I buy old games on GOG and save the installers, simple as.
A lot of the user manuals from older releases were provided by GOG users themselves, though. When GOG was still a community.
Seems to be the case. Out of my entire GOG library, the oldest releases are the best. They gave up on providing all those extra goodies ages ago.
I like that GOG Galaxy lets me deactivate pop-ups and achievements, which was not possible in Steam the last time I tried it. But that was some ~15 years ago. Has this changed nowadays?
You can disable the Steam overlay which disables achievements. Still don't think there's a way to only disable achievements, but keep the overlay. But the overlay either doesn't work/causes problems in so many games that it should always be disabled anyway.
My biggest problems with Galaxy are that the Store page takes significantly longer to load than through a web browser,
Same with Steam. I can't imagine using the client to browse either one, I just have the stores bookmarked in my browser. GOG store is still laggy af though.

GOG's migrating their account system into a new CDPR one. You have to opt in to this migration or your account will be lost I think? An email was sent a few hours ago.

A lot of Steam games are actually DRM free, and it's more than likely that if it's on Steam and GOG the game is also DRM free, save for individual cases.
The information about inclusion of DRM or Denuvo is provided by 3rd parties - not by Valve neither by publisher. So Valve and publisher can always say - 'we've never said anything about DRM-free'.

As the Steam client and Steam updates are mandatory - publishers (like Capcom) were able to add more layers of DRM to their games on Steam after release - and cannot be sued for false advertising.

I agree that a lot of Steam games are actually DRM free - and have offline installers. Razor 1911 does what Valve don't.

The problem with piracy now is, ironically, the shoddy state games are released in. Since devs finish a game after releasing it, it gets really tedious trying to keep up to date with pirated copies. This isn't a problem with older games, though.

It's why I stopped playing games on release. Don't play vidya for the social angle so I'm fine playing something years later.

I guess there are a lot of players that MUST be the first to get x-achievements, x-finish time, x-completion percent, etc etc for some reason. It has gotta suck if you play certain games at a get together and the game is an utter crash n burn fest of bugs and errors. Prolly ruins the mood for the release.

Achievements are (read: can be) much more nuanced than high scores, though, and can offer unique challenges you wouldn't otherwise think of. For me, achievements are a net positive.

Did steam/galaxy/or any of the other gaming sites add achievements to games that never had achievements? Is it a big thing for sort of modders to say "Hey! Let's add achievements to old assed games. EVERY GAME CAN BE AN ACHIEVEMENT WINNER!"

Uh huh. :?

Playing older games with achievements is a truly bizarre experience.

In many cases achievements are disabled when there is any kind of mod installed - or they are added in patches or 'remasters' - or are active only when the game is launched through Galaxy.

So after playing the game to death - you are suddenly showered with achievements for accomplishing trivial things. It's like congratulating Kosmic for finally finishing Super Mario Bros - after 5 hours of restarting the speedrun at level 4.2.

In olden days - you were rewarded for finishing the game with short cinematic outro. Now when the whole game is often cinematic - people need additional assurances.

The achievements for trivial things are for the benefit of the developers imo. That's how they can easily collect data about how players play the game. It's also interesting for people on niche forums in particular circumstances.

Your ignore list.
GOG's migrating their account system into a new CDPR one. You have to opt in to this migration or your account will be lost I think? An email was sent a few hours ago.
What? I somehow skimmed past this news.
That is not what the e-mail says.

You are receiving this email due to your use of online features, including Cross Progression and My Rewards, in CD PROJEKT RED games, as well as your participation in platforms like the CD PROJEKT RED Forums. We are migrating these products to a new account system, owned and operated by CD PROJEKT S.A., effective from March 5th, 2024. This consolidation will involve the transfer of governance of your personal data, including your email address and username, from the GOG account system to the CD PROJEKT RED account system.

What does this change?
Starting March 5th, 2024, the above mentioned online features and services will be available through a new CD PROJEKT RED account system.

Do I need to take any action?
No, a new CD PROJEKT RED account will be created for you automatically based on your GOG Account information: user ID, username and email address. This will allow you to continue using features provided by CD PROJEKT RED with no interruption. No action is required on your end.

How can I log in after the migration?
Your new account will use the same email address as your GOG Account. If you’re already logged into any of our games, you will stay logged in when the account change takes place.

What happens to my personal data?
Upon migration, CD PROJEKT S.A. will become a data controller of your personal data connected with CD PROJEKT RED account. Transfer of data will be based on a legitimate interest in ensuring continuity of CD PROJEKT RED online services. For more information see updated CD PROJEKT S.A. Privacy Policy available here.

How does this affect my current GOG account?
Your GOG account and all your GOG purchases remain unaffected. The GOG.com website and the GOG Galaxy app will continue to use the GOG account system. Your GOG account will be separate from your CD PROJEKT RED account.

Can I opt out?
If you do not wish to have a CD PROJEKT RED account created for you, you may opt out of the account creation process by clicking this link. After the account system migration, you will be able to delete your account with the same link.

If you choose to opt out, please note that on March 5th, 2024 you will lose access to Cross Progression, My Rewards, and RED Forums, and all connected data will be permanently deleted.

You can create a new CD PROJEKT RED account at any time.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please visit our support page.

can you make it so you can choose which games do you want from exodos?
Yes. Get the torrent and download the metadata and the games/extras you want. The metadata contains the config files you will need and the games can be run with any dosbox variant following the config settings.
Or you can download everything exodos needs to unpack(everything not in Gamedata and the exodos folder) plus the games/extras and then run setup.bat and only the games you have will be integrated into lunchbox. You will still have to install them when running them for the first time in lunchbox.
And unlike GOG, you have the option of running the original or modified game.
