You can't go wrong with bro Paul Corfiatis. He has released so many great wads. I'm playing Whispers of Satan ATM. P.good and gets better and better.

Right now, I'm slowly playing trough the first episode of latest Blade of Agony beta.

I'm mostly enjoying it, even tho it can get rather frustrating at times. For example, there is this section in second proper map (which is a rather impressive piece of work overall - 'tis huge, somewhat non-linear, moody and great looking) where you are crossing a minefield while being shot at by some particularly precise German snipers. Or, in fourth map, you have a bunch of really powerful and precise hitscanners shooting at you basically from the moment map begins.
Still, pretty impressive stuff. Great use of GZDoom effects, ridiculous amount of variety between maps - basically every single one of them so far presented a vastly different environment and situation. Also, they can be rather surprising. Map I'm playing right now, for example, starts at the location of m1... except, you then proceed to this complex of half-burred Egyptian ruins, and insides of said ruins would be right at home in a TR game.

There are some pretty nice touches too, like ally base BJ visits between maps: you get briefings for every new mission, chat with NPCs, you have a shop where you can use treasure you collected in previous map(s) to buy ammo and equipment (btw, not a big fan of how weapons and ammo don't carry on between maps).

Beat Base Ganymede with ND. This is one tasty vanilla-flavored 3 episode megawad for Doom 1

+
Doom gameplay, no ridiculous horde arenas
Nice, logical level design, key hunts never overstayed their welcome
Nice visuals, not on par with wads like Saturn X or WoS but certainly no eyesore either
Good soundtrack

Some more variety would have been nice

I have a question that I hope someone can answer here about Doom. It's mainly a curiosity. I did a search for it some time back, but I wasn't able to figure it out. I'm thinking it won't be easy.

Can you compile several individual wad maps into one episode? Say I wanted to add a few maps from Hell Revealed with some others.. My ideal goal would be to compile a bunch of my favorite maps and have them playable one after the other like in one of the Doom episodes. Of course this would just be for personal use.

I suppose it would just be the matter of extracting them individually and compiling them into one wad correct? I guess that seems obvious enough. I'll take a look. Thanks.

I feel like a noob. How do I run this? There's no .wads in the zip file, or anything I can open with zdoom.

There is a batch file within the archive, just run it once you unzip the WolfenDoom folder and it will generate a .pk3 file for you. Since Blade of Agony is a wip GZDoom project, you'll need one of the more recent GZDoom dev builds to run it http://devbuilds.drdteam.org/gzdoom/

Blade of Agony is p nice. Sadly, it looks like Tormentor once again overestimated interest in his community projects, so who knows when are episodes 2 and 3 going to be finished (and they are the ones that were supposed to contain really unique stuff like stealth sections and branching story). Years ago he started a GZDoom community megawad for Heretic that was almost as ambitious as Blade of Agony, and that one has been stuck at only one nearly completed episode for ages now...

Playing the demo version (12 maps) of a Doom 2 reinterpretation called The Ultimate Doom II, so far this challenging and beautiful wad has been most excellent. If the rest of the maps are this good and if Gardevoir manages to finish the project the author deserves to win a Cacoward IMO, really good stuff.

What tormund said. Also, I do hope that you aren't allergic to mouselook in your Doom mods: it's pretty much required for playing Blade of Agony.

Another Doom 2 "reinterpretation" was released recently - this time 'twas a Soviet take on last year's unfortunate "Doom 2 in name only". We have nine maps (more or less) loosely based on names of original Doom 2 maps.

So far, I'm up to map 6. Maps 1-4 were enjoyable, with classic gameplay and great detailing. "The Waste Tunnels" presented a massive jump in number of enemies, with base number clocking at nearly 700 baddies. I'm happy to report that this particular map did not de-evolve into a slaughterfest, as number of enemies might indicate. It still won't be everyone's cup of tea tho: it is one huge, exhausting, somewhat non-linear festival of switch/key hunting, with impressive but sometimes tad overdone detailing, and a couple of needlessly frustrating sections.

Anyway, so far, I'd say it's definitely worth checking out. I need some rest after that map 5 tho.

I finally finished Whispers of Satan by Paul Corfiatis and Kristian Aro, after playing for almost a goddamned month. This megawad is fucking HUGE and full of awesome. It starts with a couple of small and rather boring maps, then moves to some bigger and better ones and then goes into a shitload of huge and absolutely majestic maps filled with well placed enemies and intense classic styled combat that never degrades into mindless slaughterfest. Nice secrets too.

It's a total of 30 + 6 secret maps. 30+2 are compatible with vanilla, to play the rest 4 secret maps you'll need zdoom, or similar. Fully compatible with Brutal Doom. The icing on the cake ? it uses 99% original Doom assets and works great with the hi-res textures.

I'm not at all pleased with this one. It's an episode consisting of 9 maps in a linear procession. Rather frustrating and tedious affair, and author's idea of improving Hexen's combat is akin to something concocted by a balancetard with 1000+ comments in local CRPG forum. For example, mage's starting weapon is replaced with a weak-ass wand that fires slow moving projectiles. Said projectiles can be reflected by slaughtaur's shield, and there is a shitload of slaughtaurs around from the very beginning. Also, once player's health falls below 30 or so, his movement speed is reduced to a snail crawl... one can easily imagine the results. There is also a large amount of new monsters around, all of them taken from Realm 667 archive without being modified in any notable way... again, results are as "fun" as you would expect.
Maps can be pretty, long and nicely detailed, if nothing else, with some functional 3D architecture. However, author really loves his colored fog. It looks alright in some maps, in others it is borderline puke inducing and also damaging to the gameplay: one of the maps, second or third one, had ice monsters that blended in with the fog at a ridiculously short distance from the player.
I played all the way up to map 5, which consists of a boss battle with a particularly HP bloated

I maybe played Doom once as a kid then never go around playing it or any other 90's fps games. This week I just finished Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and No Rest for the Living. About to finish act 3 of Heretic. These games are fucking fun. I love how you run around like a maniac and how the levels actually have something else than just run from A to B.

Next up I have Dark Forces, Hexen, Duke 3D, Blood, Strife and Shadow Warrior. Then I can get into custom wads. Project Brutality looks great for a start. So weird how I missed all of this stuff for so many years. That's what I get for playing WOW and DOTA.
