"Immersive sim" is a retarded and completely useless label, and anyone who uses it should be beaten to death.

It's a useless label, but everyone knows exactly what kinds of games you're talking about when using it.

"Immersive Sim" has retroactively been applied to Thief, System Shock, Ultima Underworld, Deus Ex, Dishonoured, Prey(shock) and, last I checked, fucking Deathloop. It's worthless.

Yeah it's getting ridiculous, I even heard that Bioshock, Fallout: New Vegas, Subnautica and Hitman(2016) are added to mix of "Immersive sims". I believe the term got popularized by idiotic "ludonarrative dissonance" youtubers, who used this term to sound smarter than they are.

(as a sidenote i recommend checking his other videos, i think in general his reviews should be liked by the people here and if anything i find it weird that nobody mentioned him so far aside from the Morrowind video)

I've been watching on and off, and just like his Morrowind video it's really solid. Basic problem he has is chapter naming convention aka Fighters Guild isn't really just about the faction, but him going into general game mechanics, balancing, how it compares to other games, etc. It's not merely story summary some may be lead to believe.

Yeah, i just finished the video - actually watched half of it in one go (yes, 6 hours of youtube watching :-P) until the Knights of the Nine part because i hadn't actually played that DLC since i assumed it was some throwaway quest or something not much more involved than horse armor and the only DLC people raved about over the years was Shivering Isles. So i installed Oblivion, used some character i had around from a savegame and played that DLC to form my own opinion before continuing the video (it ended up better than expected, though as i wrote i didn't expect much, but at least lorewise i liked it more than other quests in the game - and i found the quests fine, even if some parts were kinda... lacking in editorial effort, like the bit that Patrician points out in his video after you pass the ghosts' tests - what he mentioned was *exactly* what i thought :-P). Then i continued the video in two parts (i went to sleep before the Dark Brotherhood part and continued it after i woke up).

As i mentioned in the Bethesda thread (after watching half of it) i think it is the best video i've seen from a mechanical analysis perspective (not just about Oblivion) and a large part of that is that he mixes his playthrough and story analysis with the mechanical analysis and how the mechanics affect what you do in the game - i really wish other videos went into such detail when discussing specific games (if you know of any that does it please mention - note that i do not mean discussing individual mechanics by themselves or some theoretical way mechanics would work, even with examples from games that apply them, like e.g. game marker's toolkit does, but videos that focus on specific games and analyze their mechanics in the context of the game they are reviewing/analyzing).

He also does story/writing analysis (in that he goes through some popular quests - including the main quest of course - and judges how they make sense, how they fit with the TES lore up to the point of Oblivion's release, etc), but i've seen other videos like that, though still that part is of high quality too. Though after the middle or so, near the ending of the main quest, i think he goes a bit too hardcore on TESlore assumptions 2-3 times, but they're short. Also often when he points out flaws on the writing side, he also does provide his idea on how they could be done better (while still being about the same thing, not radical changes), which personally i found the least interesting parts (even if most of the time his ideas did sound as an improvement at the end of the day it is just after-the-fact fanfic) - but again they're very short.

He also mentioned some development history, especially whenever he could find info about who designed what quest as well as the apparent differences between the designers and how that affected their quests, but he didn't go as deep as i'd like. Not sure how much info is out there though as he brought up almost every article i was aware of (but i'm not that invested into Oblivion's development history, it is just articles i remember coming across randomly).

Anyway, if you want to watch some good analysis video(s) and you are not afraid of bookmarking timestamps, i recommend watching this even if you didn't like Oblivion itself.

Most "recent" (i.e. mid '00s onwards) Bethesda titles can be quite tricky to mine for "behind the scenes" information that isn't in official materials/Todd's GDC talks, as Bethesda/Zenimax have/had extremely strict NDAs.

I can't believe I actually watched this entire thing. There is no reason for this to be 12 hours long. If he stripped out the "let's play" portion of this analysis where he literally goes through every quest on screen and instead just summarized what happens in each faction then this could have been under 2 hours.

That said, he makes some very good points about Oblivion and why it's basically the worst Elder Scrolls game.
