It is pretty sad how old games when upscaled look better than most new games. While the new games look the same shitty way even if in 20k resolution.
UE4 is an ugly turd of an engine with lighting worse than engines made before it, even pre-baked shit.

This is not a UE4 issue its modern engine issue. Its the tax these engines pay for being fully "dynamic". Older engines were designed as game engines first and foremost. So the focus was on making good looking but not necessarily true to life visuals.

Modern engines however are designed more like hobbled animation software. They focus more on having very flashy but functionally impossible features like fully dynamic lightning, which can look great when you have 5 minutes to render every single frame but turns to complete shit when you need to render even 30 frames every second. The hardware is simply not capable of handling the necessary number of dynamic light sources and high definition assets to make these "dynamic" look good. They are designed more like very extensive tech demos that might be feasible in 10 to 20 years.

If you watch the unreal engine tech demos compilation on YT you can see how this mindset evolved. The demons went from practical demonstration of feasible goals to demonstrating visuals and features that are achievable only theoretically. Take the Samaritan tech demo, that one is essentially just a very high fidelity version of Arkham city. Demanding but very much possible and built around stuff you might have use for in a real game. Then compare it to every single tech demo since. They are all these bizzaro demonstrations that are obviously impossible to run on anything but the absolute bleeding edge hardware and even then it would not run well. The 2012 demo straight up shows a level of fidelity no game has actually reached on PS4 and the latest UE5 demo is no different except they try harder to pretend its a "game".

Never mind the time it takes to create good looking realistic assets.

Man, I remember first seeing stills of that UE2 tech demo in a gaming mag, I was so gobsmacked at characters having individually-modeled fingers. Kept trawling my local shop after that, asking about "Unreal Two." And then I finally got it... UT 2003... That was when I learned of Decline.

The RETARDED combat system is just one of the many problems with this remake. The remake starts with a consequenceless explosion in the most vital area of the penal colony(trade exchange zone) and nobody cares about it. Gothic is all about freedom, immersion and story yet the remake is all about handholding, gamey nonsensical mechanics and awful writing.

Last I heard they were planning to reuse all the original recordings of the voice acting for the German dub so I doubt the writing will be changing much if at all. I don't think anything we saw in the vertical slice is going to carry over to the remake.

I'm not sure if it's common knowledge by now, but check the install folder of this thing even if you uninstalled it. There might be a fuckhuge debug log file that hogs precious HDD space.

You're welcome.

Let's repeat last 34 pages of feedback. Main issues with Gothic Remake Teaser are:
  • Different introduction. In original you were thrown into a pond, your soaking character then was beaten up by "welcoming comitee". Then Diego said his job is to instruct everyone to Old Camp - no special treatment, no protege-under-his-wing, no Hollywood explosive entrance, no nothing. You get a letter for mages and that's it. You didn't feel like a hero, you had to earn that status. In the Old Camp you WILL be shanked and robbed on your first playthrough unless you know to stay in line. Also this is a sign the story would have more changes. Next thing we know Mages are all nibbers and Gomez decides to kill them because they are all black bacause black-washing and racism is in fashion these days.
  • Right of the bat you have to fight Snappers or Dragon Snappers. Snappers in Gothic 2 can one-shot your character through first 1/3 of the game. In Remake they get into whacking contest with wolves. In Gothic 1 you get to fight young molerats or young wolves. Not even regulars but nerfed versions for tutorial's sake.
  • Modern shitty level design. Many invisible walls or paths blocked with crates which cannot be climbed for no reason. If something looked like you could climb it in G1/G2 it definately was and it even had some extra items to reward your effort!
  • For Honor combat. Except it's sluggish and remake would be far better trying to mimic Dark Souls if they can't for whatever reason copy 20-year work of handful of people, sprinkle it with more animation variance and better sound-effects.
  • Modern shitty UI. The game gets paused, has lots of embers and your character in center of the screen. Just like Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, Shadow of War, Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Ghost Recon Wildlands, God of War, Days Gone, Destiny 2, Destiny 1. In the original games you had small unobtrusive windows and enemies could still kill you if you tried to drink a potion mid-fight. In Remake you press the button and with no animation your health gets replenished. Just like in Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, God of War, Days Gone, Destiny 2, Destiny 1. How original.
  • Every character looks like retarded Alvaro. Nameless Hero is the worst because of inventory UI.
  • Everything Nameless Hero does he has to comment. Like the game was designed for blind or mentally-challenged. The original game didn't tell you anything, not even how to move. The developers expected you could figure it out with a printed manual or pressing F1.
  • Quests which make no sense like the one to get a sword. Why do you need a sword to progress in main story line? Why do you have to help some idiot instead of taking it from a corpse and then stabbing him with it? The quest-giver isn't even standing near it! In G1/G2 you could try to attack Xardas when it didn't make any sense, he would just insta-kill you. But you still had the option. The game wasn't treating you like a fool who can't make 2+2. If you died from your stupid decisions, it was entirely on you. That's why the old games were captivating, because you had to invest your time and pay attention. Modern games go out of their way to make sure you do not do something unexpected, you do not attack someone, do not miss anything or have characters repeat clues so even 5-year old can go on auto-pilot and finish them. The only thing that was missing from Remake were Skyrim quest-markers. Then the retardation design would be complete.

Can't they just port Gothic 1 to Unreal Engine and improve the enviroment and character models? Even if it would be a shitty work like GTA: Definitive Edition modders could still fix any visual issues.

Both G1 and G2 are classic, relatively popular games with cult following that would benefit hugely from updating UI and controls. It's really weird that no one jumped at it earlier and it's even weirder that when someone finally did, it took the shape of whatever the hell is this project supposed to be. Just do some shoddy hd rehash and add R1 UI+controls, people will buy it. I would.

The problem is what they will do with the non original recordings. They will introduce a lot of bullshit. Think on the awful starting area with mindless consequenceles explosions, awful jokes, handholding, during the entire game. I just don't get why the mod Returning is so hated by a part of Gothic community, yes, it has a lot of fanfic on it. Yes, it chances a lot of things. But still way more Gothic than this remake.

Can't they just port Gothic 1 to Unreal Engine and improve the enviroment and character models? Even if it would be a shitty work like GTA: Definitive Edition modders could still fix any visual issues.

Strongly agreed. And any change made to the game must be optional. Example, if they introduce a path to become mage in chapter 1, that should be optional. A alternative ending? Optional.

No, because since the industry no longer makes new games, only remakes and sequels, these "remakes" are the only chance new devs get to "shine and make something of their own". Of course this is entirely retarded as a pursuit because making a true to the original remake and making your own thing are mutually exclusive. You cannot simultaneously do your own thing and stay true to some pre-established framework. Its like saying you respect traffic rules while being in the wrong lane. Sure you may respect them but since you are in the wrong lane it does not really matter whether you respect them or not, now does it?

However things being as they are most devs are literary too mentally stunted to realize this because the discourse surrounding these games is so poisoned with fake feedback that it usually becomes apparent how much they fucked up only in their subsequent games. Basically they get a lot positivity from new people who have never touched or were interested in the original but heard its a "classic" and as long as it does not literary suck donkey dick they will praise it. It does not even need to be good, just not absolutely terrible for them to get some measure of positive response. So they then move onto making their new "own" game but since they have no pre-established framework to base it off of the game usually fizzles out or sinks them. The consequences and the real feedback only arrive after they stop making remakes and lose the support structure that comes with them and so the consequences of "making remakes as your own thing" seem immaterial.

This game is going suck ass, after all, their starting material was bad to begin with. They'd have to redo it from scratch to salvage that mess.

Edit: They should only include the cool part where you get the best armor and sword and do dungeon crawling.

General Update - Minecrawler Sneak Peak & Call for Community Manager Application
Minecrawler Sneak Peak & Call for Community Manager Application
Back in March, we released a render of the actual in-game Scavenger created for the Gothic Remake to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gothic. Since it’s been a while, we thought we would post another update.
We really enjoyed the critical discussions and constructive feedback that came out of this post and so we will continue releasing key elements of the game that way.
Today we're bringing you a sneak peak of our interpretation of the Minecrawler.
e77558f174ec96a90274594371446db2a75ecded.jpg

We can assure you that they’re even more terrifying moving around in-game. We also came up with a small additional twist to these creatures, but there’ll be more on that in a later update.

Generally, we are very pleased to share that the development of the Gothic Remake is progressing on all fronts. We have assembled a team of over 35 specialized developers at our Barcelona office and are working with several contractors and outsources in addition. Gothic may be more than 20 years old, but the scope of this game cannot be underestimated.

We are also still looking for additional people to join our team. If you’re interested, you can check our open positions here: www.alkimiainteractive.com

Today, we want to put a special spotlight on the open position of Community Manager at Alkimia Interactive! We are looking for a versatile person to join us at our Barcelona office and help with coordinating our communication efforts and community presence, among other things. The most important part is to be passionate about Gothic and proficient in English and German (ideally Polish or Russian as well). You can find more details here: https://alkimiainteractive.com/callforcommunitymanager.html

Thank you for your support and enjoy the holidays! We have prepared a short video from the Gothic Remake developers. The Goblin's hats will of course not be part of the game, who would put a Santa outfit in a game?

Only now do I found out that Nicolas Lietzau - the the Lead Writer and Project Lead of Enderal - is leading the writing for the Gothic Remake. Now I'm officially intrigued. Let's hope the gameplay side pans out too.
Very cool
Now just take away the "cinematic" moments, the NH mumbling to himself and basically redo the game from scratch and we got a deal
