Sounds kind of like the opposite to me. Open-ended?

Maybe a reference to this? http://www.battletech-mercenaries.com/

And probably not this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercenaries_(series)
So it's mission-based, but in a nonlinear fashion.

Hmm, ComStar is a faction in this universe, then?

Maybe that tells us something about the game's story.

It appears that they're using the concept art from MWO for their models. Let's hope that's the only aspect the game inherits from PGI.

Battletech is just a victim product of a japanese mecha anime licensing shameless plagiarism that subsequently resulted in licensing SNAFU.

Not really, ComStar is a permanent fixture of the setting. A quasi religious order providing FTL comms and preserving/recovering lost technologies or, later, serving as a deus ex machina to troll the clans via super secret mech army pulled out of its ass.

Well, I was being nice, but yeah. They did try to get the license eventually though, they just licensed from the wrong party.

Aren't Mercenaries campaigns on BattleTech some RPGish campaigns where you have a mercenary company with player made mechs and maybe some NPCs doing contract missions? I mean, this looks like some sort of non linear shadowrun campaign but with mechs what would be fine and fun for me but not exactly mind blowing.

What would be mind blowing would be if you had to conquer a periphery planet with a mercenary company where each mech pilot had their own personality but could die and you had to replace them, you would have to conquer strategic places on this planet on tactical turn based missions with the help of a militia trained by you. :smug:

And there's already people clamoring for an iOS version. Wargamers, apparently. This is why we can't have nice things.

I just want an assload of unit customization options, challenging combat encounters and a lengthy enough campaign. Don't care if it's linear or not.

I hope it doesn't take an iteration or two to get it right, like Shadowrun, but regardless :takemymoney:

Damn. I thought I couldn't get more excited for something than Bard's Tale.
But I completely forgot about all the (partially drunken) nights of Mechwarrior.

Those two have to potential to crush my soul, if they'll be disappointing.
What is left of it anyways.

Better would be something like the Gray Death Legion scenario, where the original company is destroyed and you as a sole survivor has to build up a new merc. company on Galatea and you end up in a Verthandi (Gray Death) kind of scenario. And the whole time, you have to fight off the Liau assassin's and discover who is behind the destruction of the original company.

So what are the differences between Mechcommander, Battletech and Mechwarrior...?
Mechcommander is a real time tactics computer game by Microsoft Studio's FASA studio. BattleTech is a tactical turn based board game, which is also name giving to the whole franchise and MechWarrior was the RPG that was build on the BattleTech board game and franchise. FASA Corporation was the rights holder for Battletech and Shadowrun. And Jordan Weisman founded the FASA Corporation with some other guy, and that is the same who founded the HBS.

So MechWarrior is the cRPG offspring of BattleTech (table top) and MechCommander was MS's own FPS creation...? Battletech was Infocom's baby for two games (Cresent Hawk Revenge & Inception) which were clearly cRPGs while MechCommander is the big robot action games.

edit: All in the same universe... got it.

Mechcommander is settled in the BattleTech universe, because Microsoft has bought the rights from FASA and Microsoft has also bought FASA interactive. Microsoft has transferred the rights to HBS (more to Jordan Weisman) for new Shadowrun and Battletech computer games.
