The best thing about HoMM 3 is the editor. The best user made maps are much better than the rather boring campaign and most of the standalone maps.

It used to be the best site for downloading HoMM3 maps, since the zip files included the original ReadMe files and both the text files and map file would have the original date.

Not sure but compared to Vanilla HotA is more balanced. Almost all MP lobby is HotA.

There is an (old) collection of 3223 maps, which contain the original ReadMe files for those maps that have them.
Use one of these links. I've only checked the ext.to link and that works at least.

if you download the magnet from ex dot to, there are actually seeders, the seeders page in the torrent isnt really up to dote

Something was amiss with my torrent client. Resolved the issue, restarted the client, and the maps downloaded.

Just go to the heroes 3 wog website and you have a collection of maps to download. From a curated amount to 6k+

It was amazing.

I have to say though, Polish heroes III community has some kind of brown rice fever. I think I've seen three nerds with viet wives/GFs there.

VCMI? I doubt that

HotA is polished and vanilla-friendly and has a great MP lobby, plus people still find WoG/Era a lot interesting and fun. VCMI is kinda nowhere (a platform with potential but none gave life to it yet)
