Historical Revisionism in Video Game and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Nintendo was truly excellent with the gamecube, it did not sell well but it was a great console, with so many classics played today, and massively appreciated
What are the classics?
Star Wars rogue squadron
Mario Sunshine
Luigi Mansion
Smash Bros Melee
Zelda Wind Waker
Zelda Twilight princess
F-Zero GX
Fire Emblem path of Radiance
Eternal Darkness
Baiten Kaitos
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Paper Mario
Mario Kart double dash
Mario party 4
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
Star Fox Adventures
Super Monkey Ball 1
Super Monkey Ball 2
Tales of Symphonia
It's a pretty good library tbh, few consoles can boast with such list.
I could give you a list of similar quality for the PS2 (and most other major home systems) easily, though it will have a different character. Anyway, here's a few GameCube games you've missed: P.N.03, Mr. Driller Drill Land, Kururin Squash.

Re4, Remake and 0 all come from the gamecube. There's Billy Hatcher too.

Your list is basically a list of Nintendo games (and some which were never very good TBH) and a couple of token other devs mixed without. It under sells the gamecubes library.

Meanwhile, so called overrated PS2 has a handful of great games, and a ton of crap that nobody remembers. Most games weren't fun on that console.

I blame the success of the PS2, it was decline. Quality over quantity, and the Gamecube was BY FAR the leader in this area, just like the Megadrive/SNES were at the time.
Sony's strategy of going for quantity dates back to the PS1 where they really did as much as possible to get third party developers on board with extremely good deals regarding royalties, disc pressing price, dev kit price, ease of development etc. PS1 has a shitoad of shovelware as well. PS2 largely continued that apart from ease of development, I think it was way harder and if it wasn't coming after the PS1's success devs would have rather avoided it.

I had (and still have) both back in the later half of their lifespans, and this feeling that the PS2 didn't have that much good stuff on it is something I can relate to (also the huge wow factor of GTA3 that sold a shitload of PS2 was not a thing in my case, as I played it on my PC first). Still I think there's a fair bit of interesting obscure stuff to find in the ocean of crap shovelware the PS2 has, more than what the cube offered in total.

Sony were the only ones making CDs back then. Every competitor had to pay Sony to make their games which creates a huge advantage for Sony over the other companies. They could offer better deals since they controlled the medium games were being made on.

PS2 has a lot of slightly above average games. It doesn't have a lot of 10/10 games, but it has a lot of 7/10 games. Stuff you can enjoy for a few hours and feel satisfied by.

Sega releasing the 32x and Saturn at the same time probably made a lot of devs thinking making games to PS1 was a better option. Capcom and Konami, for example, had promised games to 32x but they jumped ship as soon as possible and iirc no new game of them was released on 32x.
The only good thing about the 32x was this:
In order to convince the press that the 32X was a worthwhile console, Sega flew in journalists from all around the country to San Francisco for a party at a local nightclub. The event featured a speech from Kalinske, live music with a local rapper praising the 32X, and 32X games on exhibition. However, the event turned out to be a bust, as journalists attempted to leave the party due to its loud music and unimpressive games on display, only to find that the buses that brought them to the nightclub had just left and would not return until the scheduled end of the party.

Game journo parties are super common. I can't imagine a group of people I'd less like to be around. Being a woman there must be like playing Frogger but the cars are rapists and male feminists.

I think in the U.S., SMS was boned by poor offerings in stores and rental outlets, at least everywhere I was. If I look at a list of SMS games now, there is a lot of fire on there I never even knew about, about 20% of it landed on shelves. Even magazines didn't cover a lot of it, either due to NES bias or the games didn't make it to mainstream stores, I'm not sure what. I would have been a much happier Master System owner if I had been able to access the entire catalog. The average SMS box art didn't help either omg. And even those shitty box arts have copers, of course.

Box arts weren't all terrible. Some of them have full art and not just a dildo and a net. Still kind of a classic look I'd like to see some indies use.

Rampage is one. They even kept the grid, but made it a much more stylish black on read, and the art was nice and covering most of the front, and the font wasn't the super generic one they oftenhad. Yeah I think it's the stark white background and the bland font that were just sad. Even some of the shitty little illustrations they had for some games would have been helped by a colored backing and a nice thematic, stylish title font.

These are a few examples of revisionism and how the current zeitgeist around retro gaming has been warped through badly researched videos and losers with entire rooms dedicated to NES games because their Dad left one day and never came back. How much of our current history do you think is accurate and what are your personal stories of history now forgotten or warped? Is Nintendo a saviour of the gaymen market or did they fuck up everything so hard they're lucky the industry survived at all? Do you remember the Commodore 64 and played many of the largest game library of any platform ever? Do you just want to say how annoying NES fanboys are and laugh at the constantly flickering sprites other platforms didn't suffer from? Do you want to defend blowing cartridges as a benefit over Atari ones just working? Do you believe ET is the worst game ever because AVGN said so? Lets argue it out and laugh at the manchildren going Bing bing wahoo!
I do remember the C64. I personally didn't have one but several of my friends did (I was the weirdo who basically had DOS machines the whole time). If you were gaming in PCs in the 80s, you were probably doing it on a C64, Apple II, or Atari 800, in that order, at least in the U.S.

ET isn't the worst game ever. It isn't even the worst game for the 2600. It's not even all that bad, really, once you get the hang of how the game works and what you have to do, and considering the time constraints of its development, it's actually kind of miraculous it came out as well as it did.

I did have an NES, and I think it's a good system overall, but I get irritated at the whole concept of the Great Videogame Crash and how everything that came before Nintendo is regarded like it's some kind of inscrutable prehistory, like the games were written in Sanskrit or something. Especially when it comes from people like Jeremy Parish, who push the idea that the great pre-Crash games were simply lesser prophets foretelling the coming of the true Nintendo messiah. Stores might have liquidated their console game inventories, but I was still going to arcades and playing stuff on the computers the whole way. I even had a Colecovision, which is actually a pretty good system in its own right, shitty controller notwithstanding.

A lot (if not most) of today's revisionism was already shaped by retarded rhetoric perpetuated back then. And it was largely related to various console stuff indeed for some reason. One of the things I like doing when I visit my parents is reading my old video game mags that are still stored in the basement and the number of hilariously wrong and bizarre takes is outstanding, even if you factor the hindsight.

Source. Sadly the PSM Online review seems to have been lost to history

EDIT: lmao PSM Online turned into IGN. It's still up:

Source. And it got a 7.5/10

People, people... they are all consoles so automatically inferior to a PC. So as far as I'm concerned they're ALL decline/crap no matter the "game". Consoles were harbingers of consolitis to my cherished PC that I will never forgive. :smug:

Revionism in action. Consoles surpassed PC quite a few times in history. The often had better hardware and then PC would over take it and the next gen would do it again. A future-proofed console would have DVD or Blu ray drives before most PC gamers did but by the end of their life span be slower and less powerful than the PCs the average PC gamer was using.

Spot on about the N64 too. Youtubers now paint this picture in which everyone was playing either Mario 64 or Banjo back in the day, with the odd weirdo owning "the pervert squirrel game", conveniently sweeping the thousands-long PSX library under the rug for no reason, not to mention the PC scene which was immense (and didn't consist solely of Half-Life).
This thread is really interesting and I'm gonna read it carefully in full.

One thing that would be of added interest is to hear names or screenshots of the games that have been historically revised downward, i.e. those which have been overlooked on Master System, Megadrive and PS1, vs their NES/SNES/N64 rivals - if Chrono Trigger, Megaman and co have been inflated, what are their deflated Sega and Sony rivals? I often play retro and would love to discover a few classics. Going back and doing the Dino Crisis series again a couple of years back was great.

One common distortion that occurs is that sports games were a huge driver of mainstream interest in consoles like the Mega Drive and PS1 but sports games tend to age poorly and the audience just wants whatever is coming up, so people going back just focus on everything else.

Shinobi on the game gear was a megaman style power up unlocking game where you rescued ninjas and used their powers to explore the levels in different ways/orders. Now Shinobi is only remembered on the Mega drive.
Master system had a really fun built in light gun game which is totally forgotten while duck hunt is an eternal meme.
Alex the kidd games were popular but have issues these days.
Disney games on the Mega drive were really big with castle of illusion, quack shot and world of illusion being quite popular but forgotten for Aladdin for some reason.

It's often overlooked that Arena is the single most important sports game ever developed. :M Though I'll always have a soft spot for the Wayne Gretzky Hockey games made earlier by the same developer, and even for that developer's first game, Gridiron.

I stop the discussion at news media that keep saying Pong is the first video game.

I've even heard it in the mouth of my son, "Pong is the first video game". Fucking hell. I went to his bookshelf and burnt everything just in case.

First game with widespread success in bars and plugged in to TV so it was a first, of sorts.
